Chronicles: Battle for Greece is a released campaign expansion for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, not an upcoming announcement. First announced by World’s Edge on October 15, 2024, with a planned November 14 launch, it was later confirmed available. The expansion begins a series of ancient-world narrative campaigns created with CaptureAge.
What is Chronicles: Battle for Greece?
It is a campaign-led expansion that brings the core gameplay of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition into classical antiquity. Its presentation includes a visual overhaul, character-focused storytelling, voice acting and animated cutscenes. World’s Edge described it as “an immersive narrative expansion that transports players to the world of classical antiquity”; that is the publisher’s description, not an independent assessment.
Battle for Greece is the first chapter of Chronicles, a planned series of ancient-world narrative DLCs made with CaptureAge. The official product page describes the campaign as spanning “over a century of history.”
What is in the campaign?
21 scenarios across major Greek conflicts
The October 15, 2024 announcement counts 21 scenarios. The campaign ranges from the Ionian Revolt through the Greco-Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War, with Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis among the named battles.

Historical figures and changing promotional lists
The announcement names Lysander, Pericles and Artemisia. The current Age of Empires product page instead highlights Artemisia, Themistocles and Brasidas, while the Xbox listing names Themistocles, Pericles and Lysander. These are examples highlighted by different official pages, rather than a single consistent published roster.
Which civilizations does it add?
The expansion introduces the Achaemenids, Athenians and Spartans. Xbox’s store listing says these civilizations are available in unranked play; do not assume that they can be selected in ranked matches.

What visual and gameplay changes are described?
New unit and building models
World’s Edge’s October 2024 announcement specifies 55 new land-unit models, 19 new naval-unit models and 85 new building models. These are publisher-reported model counts, not a measure of performance or visual quality.
Naval combat and strategic mechanics
The official descriptions make naval combat a focus. The Xbox listing specifies six military ship types, including ramming and catapult ships, along with resource gathering and trade at sea. It also describes customizable Town Centers and government policies, mutually exclusive technologies, and commanders that boost nearby units. These are storefront feature descriptions, not independently tested findings.
