Use the official Forge server pack for the exact Ages Of War release you installed on your client. The currently documented server files target Minecraft 1.12.2, require at least 5–6 GB of allocated memory, and are intended to start through run.bat—not by opening server.jar. The same release, Minecraft version and Forge build must be used by every player. What the Ages of War modpack is
Ages Of War (Nukes,Bombs and Guns!!) is a CurseForge Forge modpack by Austizz_TDS. Its project description highlights guns, bombs and vehicles, while its categories place it across combat and PvP, technology, multiplayer, exploration and Vanilla+ gameplay. The intended arc is historical: begin with early tools and medieval systems, then progress toward industry, vehicles, modern weapons and nuclear-era equipment.
The pack is designed for multiplayer as well as solo exploration. A hosting summary describes quests and progression systems alongside firearms, explosives, vehicles and nuclear weapons, so a server is more than a plain survival world with a few weapon mods. The project page recorded 347,336 downloads when it was crawled in 2026. That number is a page snapshot, not a current player count or a performance guarantee.

Because the pack has more than one Minecraft listing, the release number is the first decision to make. A client installed for one release cannot safely connect to a server built from another.
Which Minecraft version and Forge release should you use?
The authoritative server-file instructions documented for Ages of War are for Minecraft 1.12.2 running on Forge. The project page also lists a newer 1.20.1 server edition marked alpha. Treat those as separate tracks rather than upgrade steps: select one track and use its client files, server pack and Forge version together.

Version 13 is dated November 26, 2024. Its changelog lists additions and changes including Lost Cities, Deep Resonance, Immersive Petroleum, Quark, several vehicle packs, voice chat and PacketFixer. Those changes are why a guide or support request should name the exact pack release, not just “Ages of War.” If a launcher offers multiple files, record the Minecraft version, pack version and Forge version shown for the profile before downloading the server files.
Requirements to check before installing
- A matching client and server release: everyone should install the same Ages of War version, Minecraft version and Forge build.
- Memory: the official server instructions specify a minimum of 5–6 GB of RAM for the server to operate properly. The supplied script is configured around 8 GB. If the host computer has less than 16 GB of total system memory, the instructions advise reducing the server allocation to 5–6 GB.
- A dedicated server folder: extract the server pack into its own writable directory rather than scattering files through a launcher or downloads folder.
- Java and Forge: use the Java runtime and Forge setup required by the selected Minecraft release. The supplied material does not state a single Java version, so follow the runtime requirement shown by the chosen server package instead of copying a version from a different release.
- Network access: local play needs only the host machine or local network. Internet play requires router port forwarding and any necessary operating-system firewall permission.
- Backups: keep a copy of the world and configuration files before changing generation, mode or mod settings.
Storage capacity, supported player counts and independent performance benchmarks are not stated in the project or server instructions. Do not infer a player limit from the RAM figure; actual capacity depends on the world, view distance, mod activity and the host machine.
Install the client profile
- Choose the release first. For the documented server procedure, select the Minecraft 1.12.2 Ages of War release. If you intentionally choose the 1.20.1 alpha listing, obtain its corresponding alpha server files instead.
- Install through a launcher that supports CurseForge packs. Open the Minecraft section, search for the exact project name, and select the profile whose Minecraft version matches your planned server. Check the displayed pack version before confirming installation.
- Launch the profile once. This lets the launcher and Forge create the instance directories and exposes any missing-runtime or dependency error before you add a server to the process.
- Close the game cleanly. Do not copy individual mods from another version into the profile. A mod that appears to have the same name can still be built for a different Minecraft or Forge release.
- Give other players the same instructions. Their profiles must match the server’s release exactly. A player who has installed the 1.20.1 alpha profile, for example, cannot use it to join a 1.12.2 world.
Keep the client profile separate from ordinary Minecraft instances. This makes it easier to identify which configuration belongs to the server and prevents a launcher update or unrelated mod from silently changing the pack you are trying to troubleshoot.

Download and prepare the official server pack
- Download the server files for the selected release from the Ages of War project’s official server-file page. Confirm that the page identifies Minecraft 1.12.2 and the same pack release as your client.
- Create a dedicated folder such as an
AgesOfWar-Serverdirectory on the host computer. Avoid a location that automatically synchronizes or locks files while the server is running. - Extract every supplied file into that folder, retaining the directory structure. The launch script, Forge files, libraries, configuration folders and world data must be able to find one another from the same server root.
- Read the launch files before editing them. The supplied instructions explicitly say: “Never run the server by clicking the ‘server.jar’ file. Always run it by clicking the run.bat file.” The script supplies the arguments and classpath expected by this pack.
- Start
run.bat. On first launch, Forge may create additional files or display an end-user license prompt. Complete that prompt according to the file’s instructions, then run the script again if required. - Wait for a ready server message before opening the game. The first start can take longer while files and the world are generated. Stop the server through its console command rather than closing the window abruptly.
If Windows treats the script as a text file, use the file’s context-menu option to run it or launch it from a command prompt in the server folder. Do not “fix” the problem by replacing the script with a direct double-click on server.jar; that bypasses the launch method the pack author provides.

The official instructions state that the server needs a minimum of 5–6 GB to operate properly and that the supplied run.bat is configured around 8 GB. These are publisher requirements, not an independent benchmark. The right setting is limited by the host computer’s total memory: leaving no memory for Windows, Java, the launcher and other services can make the entire machine unstable.

To edit the allocation, open run.bat in a plain-text editor and change the Java maximum-heap value from the script’s 8 GB setting to the chosen 5 GB or 6 GB value, preserving the rest of the command. Save a backup before editing. If the script contains more than one memory flag, change only the maximum value unless the package documentation says otherwise.
Configure the world and server behavior
The server.properties file controls at least three settings called out by the official instructions: render distance, world type and server mode. Stop the server before editing it, make one change at a time, and keep a backup of the original file.
Render distance
Render distance affects how much of the world the server must keep active for players. A lower value can reduce workload on a memory-constrained host; a higher value gives players a broader view but increases the amount of terrain and activity the server must manage. Change it conservatively and evaluate the result with the actual group that will play.

World type
World type determines how new terrain is generated. Decide it before creating the long-term world. Changing the property after exploration may not transform chunks that already exist, so create a backup before experimenting.
Server mode
Server mode controls the rule set presented to players. Set it before inviting the group and document any change so players know whether a later restart is intentional.
The server pack also includes plugins that the author says are intended to reduce lag spikes. Keep those files in place unless you have a specific compatibility reason to remove one; the author warns that removing them may increase lag. No measured reduction or benchmark is provided, so treat this as the pack author’s recommendation rather than a guaranteed performance result.
Connect from the host computer or local network
- Start the server with
run.batand wait until it is ready. - Launch the matching Ages of War client and open its multiplayer screen.
- For a game running on the same computer, enter
localhostor0as the IP address, following the server instructions. - For another device on the same local network, use the host computer’s local address if the launcher or server screen requests it, and make sure the host firewall permits the Java server.
- Join only after the server has finished starting. If the client reports missing mods or a protocol mismatch, stop and verify the pack, Minecraft and Forge versions before changing network settings.
The exact port is the one configured for the server in server.properties or shown by the server package. Do not guess a port from another Minecraft installation when configuring a router or a saved multiplayer entry.
Let friends join over the internet
Players outside your home network cannot normally use localhost; that name points back to their own computer. The official server instructions direct administrators to port forwarding for outside players.

- Give the host a consistent local address. Reserve the host computer’s local address in the router if your router supports address reservations. This prevents the forwarding rule from pointing at a different device after a reboot.
- Identify the server port. Read the port value from
server.propertiesor the supplied server configuration. Forward that port in the router to the host computer’s local address. - Allow the server through the host firewall. Permit the Java/Forge server process or the configured port when the operating system asks. A router rule cannot help if the host computer blocks the connection.
- Start the server before testing. The external player should use the host’s public address and the forwarded port, while players inside the home network can use the local address.
- Test from outside the home network. A phone using mobile data or a friend’s connection is a better test than another device on the same Wi-Fi, because some routers do not support loopback connections.
If local players can connect but outside players cannot, the pack is probably not the first suspect. Recheck the forwarding destination, firewall rule and public address. Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding; in that case, a managed host or a network service that supplies a reachable address may be necessary.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, scripts, backups and configuration, but you are responsible for the computer, memory, network and recovery work. Managed hosting moves the machine and network administration to a provider and can be faster for a group that does not want to configure a router.

What the advertised installers actually state
BoxToPlay advertises one-click installation for the exact modpack and lists Forge 1.12.2 server editions. MTXServ advertises one-click installation through an administration panel and describes a launcher-based client installation flow. Those claims describe setup features, not independent uptime or performance tests. Confirm the available Minecraft version, pack release, RAM limit, backup policy and cancellation terms before paying; current prices and program terms are not established by the project information.

The server window closes immediately
Check that you launched run.bat, not server.jar. Run the script from the server folder so its relative paths resolve correctly. Read the final console lines for a missing file, Forge error or license prompt, correct that specific issue, and start the script again.
Players receive a mod or protocol mismatch
Compare the client profile and server folder character by character: Minecraft version, Ages of War release and Forge build. Remove manually added mods and test with a clean profile. A 1.12.2 client and a 1.20.1 alpha server are different installations, even if both are labeled Ages of War.

The host runs out of memory or becomes unusable
Reduce the heap value in run.bat to the documented 5–6 GB range when the host has less than 16 GB of total RAM, and close other memory-heavy programs. Lower render distance in server.properties if the world remains overloaded. Do not allocate every gigabyte to Java.
Local play works but friends cannot connect
Verify the forwarded port, the router destination address and the host firewall. Make sure friends are using the public address rather than localhost. Test from a genuinely external network; a second device on the same Wi-Fi may give a misleading result.

The world lags after plugins are removed
Restore the supplied plugins and retest. The author says they are intended to reduce lag spikes and warns that removing them may increase lag. Because no benchmark is published, compare behavior on your own hardware rather than assuming a fixed improvement.
A configuration change damages the world
Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup of the world and configuration, and repeat the change only after copying the backup. Keep dated backups before changing world type, server mode or large mod configuration files.
Operational checklist for a dependable server
- Write down the exact Minecraft, Forge and Ages of War versions in the server folder.
- Start and stop through
run.batand the server console. - Keep the supplied performance-oriented plugins unless testing proves a compatibility problem.
- Back up the world before updates, configuration edits and major exploration sessions.
- Tell players which address applies to local play and which public address applies to internet play.
- Recheck the release when the project offers a new server file; do not overwrite a working world with an alpha or different-version package without a backup.
Which hosting approach is right for your group?
Choose self-hosting when you already have a machine with enough available memory, can administer Forge files and are comfortable forwarding a port. It provides the most control over run.bat, server.properties, plugins and backups. Choose managed hosting when router access, home bandwidth or maintenance time is the limiting factor, provided the host offers the same Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge release and enough memory for the pack. Whichever route you choose, version matching is more important than the installation method: a one-click installer and a local script fail in the same way if they deliver different client and server files.
