They produce one baby, which takes about 20 minutes to mature under the timing reported by the Minecraft Wiki; adults then need a five-minute breeding cooldown. Pigs provide raw porkchop, can be ridden with a saddle and carrot on a stick, and turn into zombified piglins when struck by lightning. The simplest useful farm is a fenced breeding pen beside a small crop plot, with mature animals moved to a separate harvest area.

What pigs do in Minecraft
Pigs are passive Overworld animals with three practical roles: food production, transportation and a route into zombified-piglin mechanics. Ordinary pigs drop raw porkchop when killed. A saddle makes a pig rideable, and a carrot on a stick provides steering while you are mounted. A lightning strike changes a pig into a zombified piglin, so a pig pen can also become the starting point for a completely different gold-and-experience project.

Those roles should not be confused. A pork farm is an animal-breeding system; a zombified-piglin farm is a hostile-mob production system with different spawning, safety and edition concerns. If your goal is dependable food, keep the design focused on breeding and harvesting pigs. Use the lightning route only when you specifically want the drops and experience associated with zombified piglins.
Which foods breed pigs?
Feed both adult pigs one of these items:
- Carrot
- Potato
- Beetroot
Microsoft’s Bedrock pig definition lists all three as breed_items; they are also the items that tempt pigs toward the player. Hold one of them in your hand and nearby pigs will follow, which is the easiest way to bring a pair into a pen. The same foods work for attracting and breeding, so you do not need a separate lure item.

What does not count as pig breeding food?
Only the three listed crops are the reliable breeding choices described by the pig data. Wheat, seeds and other ordinary animal foods should not be substituted when you are trying to start breeding. If the feed action does not produce heart particles, check that each animal is an adult and that the item in your hand is a carrot, potato or beetroot.
How to breed pigs step by step
- Build a pen. Use a fenced enclosure with a gate. Leave enough floor area for at least two adults, the baby they produce and your own movement. A gate is safer than leaving a gap in the fence because pigs will follow a held crop.
- Bring in two adults. Hold carrots, potatoes or beetroot and walk slowly from the pigs to the enclosure. Close the gate once both are inside. If you are starting from a farm, breed the first pair before removing any animals for food.
- Feed each adult. Use the chosen crop on one pig and then the other. Both adults must receive food; feeding only one does not create a baby.
- Confirm the result. Heart particles indicate successful breeding, and one baby pig appears. The adults remain in the pen, so you can keep them as breeding stock.
- Wait for the cooldown. The parents cannot breed again immediately. The animal-farming guidance gives a five-minute breeding cooldown, so keep the adults in the pen and return with more crops after it expires.
- Separate mature animals when needed. Allow the baby to grow in the breeding pen or move mature pigs to a second enclosure for harvesting. Keeping the breeding pair away from the harvest area prevents you from accidentally consuming your entire source population.
A compact pen is enough for a manual farm. The exact footprint is a design decision: prioritize a gate you can reach, a fence high enough to contain the animals and a clear route between the pen and your crop plot.
How long do baby pigs take to grow?
The Minecraft Wiki’s 2025 page crawl describes piglets as taking about 20 minutes to grow into adults. That is the practical time to plan around when estimating food output from a small pen. You can leave the babies in the enclosure while you mine or build, then return when they are mature.
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock entity data lists an ageable duration of 1,200 ticks. A data-field value and an observed in-game growth estimate are not interchangeable measurements, and timing can differ between Java and Bedrock or between game versions. Treat the approximately 20-minute figure as a planning estimate, not a guarantee for every edition and release. If a farm is being timed for a server, test it on that server’s exact version.
Managing the two timers
There are two separate waits:
- Baby growth: about 20 minutes according to the cited Minecraft Wiki timing.
- Parent cooldown: five minutes before the adults can breed again.
The cooldown is shorter than the growth period. A single pair can therefore produce another baby before the first one becomes an adult, but the pen must still have room for an expanding herd. A second adult-only breeding pen or a separate grow-out pen makes the population easier to control.

Planning the crop supply
Place a small farm plot near the pig pen so breeding food is always available. Carrots and potatoes are planted directly and can be replanted from the harvested crop. Beetroots use beetroot seeds, so harvests must leave or return seeds for the next planting.

These are convenient for a repeating pig operation because the harvested crop itself is the next planting material. Keep a reserve in a chest near the gate, harvest the plot, replant immediately and carry the surplus to the adults. A nearby water source and farmland layout are ordinary crop-farming choices; the important pig-specific point is that either crop both tempts and breeds pigs.
Beetroot
Beetroot also tempts and breeds pigs, but the planting cycle uses beetroot seeds. Store seeds separately from the food reserved for animals so a full harvest does not leave you without planting material. Beetroot is a useful alternative when it is the crop you already grow, not a requirement for pig farming.
Stock control
Do not put every harvested crop into the pen at once. Keep one chest for breeding food, count the adults you intend to retain and move excess pigs to the harvest enclosure. This avoids a crowded pen and protects the animals that keep the farm running.
What do pigs drop and what can you do with them?
Raw porkchop
Ordinary pigs provide raw porkchop. There is no universal drop count, so the safe expectation is the item type rather than a promised number per animal. If your objective is cooked food, plan a cooking stage after harvesting rather than assuming the pig drops a ready-to-eat item.

Riding a pig
Pigs can be saddled and ridden. A carrot on a stick controls the ride, allowing you to direct the saddled animal. Riding is utility rather than a replacement for a farm: you need a saddle, and the animal remains a normal pig with the same breeding and drop behavior. Keep riding animals out of the harvest lane so they are not killed accidentally.
Lightning transformation
Lightning transforms a pig into a zombified piglin. This is not a special pork drop and does not improve a normal food pen; it removes the pig from the ordinary breeding path and creates a hostile mob. Protect open pens from storms if preserving the herd matters, and treat any lightning-based build as a separate project.
Farm design 1: a simple manual food pen
The manual design is the best starting point because it has the fewest moving parts and works as a learning tool in either edition. Build a fenced pen with a gate, place a chest for carrots, potatoes or beetroot nearby, and grow one of those crops within walking distance. Use two adults as permanent breeders, wait through the cooldown, and move mature offspring into a second enclosure when you need porkchop.
Recommended layout
- Breeding pen: the original adults and new babies.
- Grow-out or harvest pen: mature pigs selected for food production.
- Crop plot: close enough that you can lure animals and restock the chest without a long trip.
- Storage: separate spaces for breeding crops, saddles and collected porkchop.
This separation is more important than making the pen large. It gives you a clear answer to “which pigs must remain alive?” and reduces accidental losses when harvesting. The exact block count is not an official blueprint; choose a footprint that fits your base and leaves room for the herd to expand during the twenty-minute growth period.

Manual workflow
- Harvest and replant the nearby crop plot.
- Feed both adults after the five-minute cooldown has elapsed.
- Leave the baby pigs in the breeding pen while you perform other tasks.
- Move mature animals through the gate into the harvest pen.
- Collect raw porkchop and return at least two adults to the breeding pen.
This design has low construction cost and no edition-specific redstone behavior to troubleshoot. Its trade-off is labor: feeding, sorting and collecting are all manual.

Farm design 2: a semi-automatic cooking setup
A semi-automatic farm separates the jobs of breeding, growth, killing and item collection. Animal-farming tutorials describe manual and automated cooking approaches that can be adapted to pigs, but the exact redstone behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock. Build and test the mechanism on the edition and version you actually play before committing a large resource investment.
Separate the four stages
- Breeding area: adults receive carrots, potatoes or beetroot by hand.
- Growth area: babies remain safe until they mature.
- Harvest area: mature pigs are moved into the mechanism only when you want food.
- Collection and cooking: the design directs drops into storage and, if desired, through a furnace or other cooking system.
Keeping breeding manual is usually the simplest compromise. It prevents a redstone fault from feeding, killing or moving the animals that sustain the farm, while still reducing repetitive collection work. Include an accessible shutoff so you can stop the system before maintenance.

What to test before relying on it
- Whether pigs can escape at the transfer point.
- Whether babies are incorrectly routed into the harvest mechanism.
- Whether the collection path catches every item in your edition.
- Whether the cooking stage accepts the intended fuel and output arrangement.
- Whether the circuit remains safe when chunks unload and reload.
There is no single official pig-farm blueprint implied by the tutorial. The useful principle is process separation: never combine breeding stock, growing babies and the killing point in one uncontrolled space.

A lightning strike changes a pig into a zombified piglin, and zombified-piglin farms can be built for gold nuggets, gold ingots, rotten flesh and experience. This route is substantially more advanced than a pork pen because it is a hostile-mob farm rather than an animal enclosure.
Why it is a different project
- The output changes from porkchop to gold-related items, rotten flesh and experience.
- Safety becomes a central design issue because zombified piglins are hostile when provoked.
- Natural spawning and portal-based approaches use different mechanics and complexity.
- Fall-damage systems and trident-killer designs require edition-specific testing.
The cited zombified-piglin tutorial notes that portal and natural-spawn approaches differ by edition and complexity. Do not assume that a Java design will behave identically in Bedrock, or that a Bedrock trident-killer arrangement will transfer unchanged to Java. A lightning conversion is a trigger, not a complete farm: you still need a controlled spawning or transport system, a kill method and protected item collection.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Safety checklist
- Build the hostile-mob area away from your ordinary animal pens.
- Provide a reliable way to stop the system before entering it.
- Use barriers that prevent zombified piglins from reaching the player or other villagers and animals.
- Test fall heights, portal exits and collection points in the target edition.
- Store gold, rotten flesh and experience outputs separately from pork-farm supplies.
If you only need food, this route adds complexity without solving the original problem. Choose it when gold, rotten flesh or experience is the intended output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing a pig-farm design
| Design | Build cost | Manual interaction | Primary output | Safety profile | Footprint | Java/Bedrock compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual food pen | Low: fences, gate, chest and crop plot | High: lure, feed, sort and harvest by hand | Raw porkchop | Simple animal containment | Small to medium, depending on herd size | Broadly suitable; ordinary pen behavior is simpler than redstone automation |
| Semi-automatic cooking setup | Higher: adds collection, cooking and redstone components | Medium: breeding and maintenance remain manual in the safest version | Collected porkchop, with cooking if configured | Requires shutoffs and transfer-point testing | Medium or larger | Test edition-specific redstone and item-collection behavior |
| Lightning/zombified-piglin farm | High and design-dependent | Low after setup, but maintenance and safety checks remain | Gold nuggets, gold ingots, rotten flesh and experience | Hostile-mob hazards; needs protected access | Medium to large | Portal and natural-spawn approaches differ by edition and complexity |
“Build cost” and “footprint” in this table are relative planning categories, not fixed official specifications. A compact manual pen is the right default for a first base; automation is justified when repetitive collection is your bottleneck; the zombified-piglin route is a separate late project with a different resource goal.
Troubleshooting common pig-farm problems
The pigs will not follow me
Hold a carrot, potato or beetroot in your active hand and move slowly. Those are the documented temptation items. If the pigs still do not move, check that you are close enough for them to notice the item and that the path to the gate is not blocked by fences, corners or other animals.
Feeding does not produce a baby
Confirm that both pigs are adults, that each received one of the three accepted crops and that the pair is not still in the five-minute cooldown. Feed the second adult only after verifying the first interaction registered. If the animals are separated by a fence or have just bred, wait and try again.
The pen is overflowing
The baby-growth period is much longer than the parent cooldown, so repeated breeding can increase the herd faster than you expect. Move mature pigs to a grow-out or harvest pen, stop feeding temporarily, and retain a clearly identified breeding pair. Expanding the pen alone does not solve the food and sorting workload.
The farm produces no cooked food
Ordinary pigs drop raw porkchop. Add a cooking stage or smelt the item separately; do not troubleshoot the breeding pen as though it should output cooked food automatically. In a semi-automatic build, inspect the transfer, collection and furnace stages independently.
A lightning strike ruined the setup
A lightning strike can transform a pig into a zombified piglin. If preserving pigs is important, move the pen under cover or otherwise protect it from storms. If the transformation was intentional, remove the resulting hostile mob from the ordinary animal area and handle it as a separate farm input.
The automated circuit behaves differently after moving editions
Redstone, portal behavior, natural spawning and trident-killer designs can vary between Java and Bedrock. Re-test transfer points, kill methods, item collection and safety controls on the exact edition and game version in use. Do not copy a claimed rate or layout without verifying that its assumptions match your world.
Quick Recap
A practical first-day checklist
- Gather carrots, potatoes or beetroot before searching for pigs.
- Fence a pen with a gate and leave room for babies.
- Bring at least two adult pigs inside using the held crop.
- Feed both adults and look for heart particles.
- Plant a nearby crop plot; remember that beetroot requires beetroot seeds for replanting.
- Keep a five-minute cooldown in mind before feeding the parents again.
- Plan for about 20 minutes of baby growth, subject to edition and version differences.
- Reserve a separate area for mature pigs selected for raw porkchop.
- Use a saddle and carrot on a stick only for pigs you intend to ride.
- Treat any lightning or zombified-piglin build as a separate hostile-mob project.
