Enhancement Stones—the item often called a “refining stone” by players—are the ordinary material for increasing a weapon, armor piece, or accessory’s enhancement level in Aion 2. They are usually spent together with Kina or Kinah. They do not replace Breakthrough Stones, slot-specific Enhancement Scrolls, Manastones, Spirit Stones, Theostones, or Arcana crystals: each belongs to a different progression or property system.
The practical rule is to identify what you are improving before spending anything. Enhancement Stones raise the displayed enhancement number; Breakthrough Stones extend the cap; socket stones alter stats in sockets; and Arcana resources manage a separate Arcana system. Names, caps, failure rules, and even currency spelling can vary by region and patch, so use the current client as the final authority.

The short answer: “refining stone” usually means Enhancement Stone
Aion 2 guides generally use Enhancement Stone for the common item that raises an equipment item’s enhancement level. “Refining stone” is an informal player expression rather than the terminology used consistently in the guides. Enhancement Stones apply to weapons, armor, and accessories and are normally consumed with Kina/Kinah during an enhancement attempt.

The distinction matters because using the wrong resource can waste currency, delay a planned gear replacement, or leave an item unchanged. The independent AION 2 Wiki gear-enhancement guide, GEGEBASE’s equipment-enhancing guide, and AION 2 Help’s equipment-system overview describe the systems differently in places, so slot requirements and rates should be checked in your regional client.
How the material categories differ
| Material or resource | What it changes | Where it applies | What you normally spend with it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enhancement Stone | Raises the item’s enhancement level | Weapons, armor, accessories | Kina/Kinah | It is the regular per-level material, not a cap-extension item. |
| Breakthrough Stone | Allows progression beyond a regular enhancement cap | Equipment that has reached the applicable cap | Use the requirements shown by the item | It does not substitute for ordinary Enhancement Stones during normal levels. |
| Enhancement Scroll | Provides an extra enhancement requirement | Specific equipment slots; guides cite amulets and belts | Enhancement Stones and Kina/Kinah may still be required | The affected slots can vary; check the item’s enhancement screen. |
| Manastone | Adds or changes socketed stats | Weapon and armor sockets in the fan-wiki taxonomy | Socket-system requirements | It changes properties rather than the enhancement number. |
| Spirit Stone | Acts as the accessory counterpart to a Manastone in the fan-wiki taxonomy | Accessory sockets or property slots | Socket-system requirements | Terminology and availability should be verified in the current regional client. |
| Theostone | Belongs to a separate equipment system or tab | Gear applicability depends on the client version | Requirements displayed in that system | It should not be treated as the basic enhancement material. |
| Mysterious Crystal | Refines Arcana | Arcana progression | Arcana-system requirements | It is not a standard equipment-enhancement stone. |
| Pure Crystal | Locks one Arcana property | Arcana property management | Arcana-system requirements | Locking a property is different from raising gear enhancement. |
| Kina or Kinah | Provides the currency portion of an enhancement attempt | Any system that requests the currency | Enhancement materials or scrolls as shown | It is a cost resource, not a stone. |
The organizing principle is simple: some resources improve the item as a whole, while others alter a property, socket, cap, or separate progression track. The AION 2 Wiki warns that detailed system information on its page is based on Korean and Taiwanese service and may not match a global implementation.
Enhancement Stones: the normal level-by-level material
Enhancement Stones are the first resource to identify when an equipment screen offers a higher enhancement level. They are associated with the number displayed on the weapon, armor piece, or accessory. A successful attempt consumes the required stone quantity and the listed Kina/Kinah cost, then increases that number according to the item’s rules.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
They are not a universal upgrade currency. A stone cannot by itself open an Arcana property, install a socketed stat, or necessarily push an item beyond its normal cap. If the enhancement panel asks for a scroll or a breakthrough item, those are additional gates rather than optional substitutes.
Before confirming an attempt, read the entire cost panel. The same item can require a different companion item at a particular level or slot, and guides do not establish one permanent requirement list for every region and patch. Treat the current in-game panel as authoritative over an older guide.
Breakthrough Stones: extending the enhancement ceiling
Breakthrough Stones serve a different stage of progression. They are used when an item has reached the regular enhancement limit and the system offers a way to continue. That makes them a cap-progression material, not the stone consumed for every ordinary level.
Do not spend a breakthrough item simply because it appears in the same equipment menu as Enhancement Stones. First confirm that the item has reached the relevant cap and that the breakthrough action is available. If the interface still lists a normal enhancement level, the ordinary stone-and-currency route is the one being offered.

They can also be changed by a patch or regional release. Record the requirement shown in your client rather than relying on a cap remembered from another service.
Enhancement Scrolls: slot-specific companions
Some equipment slots require an Enhancement Scroll in addition to the normal stone and currency. Amulets and belts are examples cited by the guides, but the complete list is not stable enough to assume for every client. A scroll is therefore best understood as a slot gate: it authorizes or enables enhancement for a particular category of gear.
When a slot asks for a scroll, collect the scroll before judging whether you have enough Enhancement Stones. Having stones and Kina/Kinah but no required scroll will not complete that attempt. Conversely, obtaining a scroll does not necessarily remove the stone or currency cost; the enhancement window may request all of them together.
Open the item’s own enhancement screen and check the slot label, required quantity, and any level restriction. This avoids applying a scroll intended for one equipment category to a different piece.

Manastones and Spirit Stones: changing properties, not the enhancement number
Manastones are described in the fan-wiki taxonomy as socketed items that add stats to weapons and armor. Spirit Stones are presented there as the accessory counterpart. These systems affect the properties supplied by sockets or similar slots; they do not normally raise the enhancement number printed on the item.
That difference affects both budgeting and replacement decisions. A highly enhanced item with empty or poorly chosen sockets has a different upgrade problem from an item whose enhancement level is too low. Decide whether you need more base enhancement or a different stat profile before spending socket resources.
Socketed investments may not be returned when gear is dismantled. The guides specifically caution that extraction can recover Enhancement Stones while Kina and socketed investments are not necessarily reimbursed. Inspect the current extraction prompt before removing a Manastone or Spirit Stone.
Theostones: a separate equipment-system track
Theostone appears as its own equipment system or tab in the guides, rather than as another name for an Enhancement Stone. Its precise gear applicability is not established uniformly in the available material. That makes the item’s own interface especially important: select the Theostone tab, read the eligible equipment categories, and follow the requirements displayed there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Do not transfer advice from the regular enhancement panel to Theostones. A Theostone requirement can belong to a different progression layer, with different limits, resources, and inheritance behavior. If a guide from another region describes a specific slot or numerical effect, treat it as a regional example until the current client confirms it.
Mysterious Crystal and Pure Crystal: Arcana resources
Mysterious Crystal is described as a material for refining Arcana. Pure Crystal is used to lock one Arcana property. Both therefore belong to Arcana progression and property management, not to the ordinary weapon, armor, or accessory enhancement-number process.
The distinction is functional:
- Mysterious Crystal: advances or refines Arcana.
- Pure Crystal: preserves one selected Arcana property while managing other Arcana outcomes.
If the Arcana interface asks for either crystal, Enhancement Stones will not replace it. Likewise, saving Arcana crystals does not satisfy a standard gear-enhancement cost.
Kina and Kinah: the currency attached to attempts
Guides use both “Kina” and “Kinah” when describing the currency paid during enhancement. Follow the spelling and amount shown by your client. The currency is a required economic resource in the enhancement process, not an alternative form of stone.
Because the currency is spent on attempts, an item’s expected lifespan matters. A temporary leveling item may be replaced soon, making a large currency bill difficult to justify even if you have enough stones. A durable item intended for long-term use can make the same attempt more reasonable. Include the currency cost in the decision instead of counting only the stones in your inventory.
What an enhancement attempt looks like
- Select the exact item. Open the enhancement command from the equipment interface and verify the weapon, armor piece, or accessory name and current level.
- Read the complete requirement list. Confirm the Enhancement Stones, Kina/Kinah, and any slot-specific Enhancement Scroll or other item shown for that level.
- Check the progression gate. If the item is at its ordinary cap, look for a Breakthrough Stone requirement instead of repeatedly attempting a normal enhancement.
- Evaluate replacement timing. Compare the item’s quality, expected use, transfer or inheritance options, and the cost of replacing it. Guides recommend balancing investment against how soon the item may be replaced.
- Confirm only after checking the result text. The final panel should state the possible outcome and the materials consumed. Screens differ by region, so do not rely on a remembered button position.
- Reinspect the item. After the animation or result message, verify the displayed enhancement level and your remaining inventory before starting another attempt.
One GEGEBASE guide reports that its “current Global” reference guarantees enhancement through +10. It says attempts above +10 can fail, but a failure consumes the required materials while leaving the equipment intact and without lowering its level. This is a guide-authored description rather than independently confirmed official documentation. Treat it as a current-reference claim, not a universal rule for every region or future patch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide where limited materials go
| Your situation | First question | Usually sensible action |
|---|---|---|
| You are raising an item through ordinary levels | Does the item remain useful long enough to repay the stone and currency cost? | Use Enhancement Stones only when the item’s planned lifespan and performance justify the spend. |
| The item has reached the normal cap | Does the panel offer a breakthrough action? | Reserve or obtain the required Breakthrough Stone; do not confuse it with the regular stone. |
| An amulet, belt, or another restricted slot is blocked | Which Enhancement Scroll does the item request? | Secure the correct scroll, then budget the normal stones and currency as well. |
| The enhancement number is adequate but stats are weak | Is the problem a socket or property rather than level? | Consider the appropriate Manastone or Spirit Stone system instead of another enhancement attempt. |
| You are refining or preserving Arcana | Does the Arcana interface request a crystal? | Use Mysterious Crystal for refining or Pure Crystal for the property-locking function described by the interface. |
| You are playing a damage-focused class | Will a weapon remain equipped through the next replacement cycle? | Weapon-first spending is a common priority, but class, item quality, transfer rules, and replacement plans can change that order. |
Weapon-first advice is a priority guideline, not a universal class rule. A defensive character, a character with a superior armor upgrade, or a player who can inherit enhancement to a replacement may rationally spend elsewhere.
Where the materials come from
The equipment-system guide describes dungeons and expedition activities as sources of Enhancement Stones or gear. Those activities can therefore supply both direct materials and potential replacement items. The useful comparison is not only “how many stones do I have?” but also whether the same activity is likely to give you a better item soon.

Some guides also describe extraction or dismantling as a way to recover Enhancement Stones. The recovery is not necessarily complete: Kina/Kinah and socketed investments may not be returned. Because this mechanic is version-sensitive, open the current extraction screen and read its refund list before dismantling anything valuable.
Do not dismantle a temporary item on the assumption that every investment comes back. Check each line of the confirmation window, including currency, sockets, scrolls, and any inheritance-related notice. If the client does not explicitly promise a refund, treat that investment as at risk.
Failure, refunds, and regional uncertainty
Enhancement behavior is one of the most volatile parts of the system. The +10 guarantee and non-downgrade behavior described above comes from a guide’s Global reference, while the AION 2 Wiki cautions that its detailed figures draw from Korean and Taiwanese service. No official regional comparison document was identified in the available sources.
For a current decision, verify four items in the client:
- the level at which attempts can fail;
- whether a failed attempt consumes stones, currency, scrolls, or all listed materials;
- whether the item can lose levels or remain unchanged;
- the cap, breakthrough requirement, and any pity or guarantee displayed by the interface.
Patch notes can change these rules without changing the item’s name. A screenshot or guide written for another service is useful for orientation, but it is not proof of your current rates, caps, or refund behavior.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching for “refining stones” as a separate universal item. Start with the client’s Enhancement Stone name; player terminology may differ.
- Using a Breakthrough Stone too early. It is for extending progression beyond a cap, not routine level increases.
- Ignoring slot restrictions. An amulet or belt may require an Enhancement Scroll in addition to stones and currency.
- Confusing sockets with enhancement. Manastones and Spirit Stones change properties and are not substitutes for level enhancement.
- Spending Arcana crystals on gear enhancement. Mysterious Crystal and Pure Crystal belong to Arcana functions.
- Counting only material inventory. Include the Kina/Kinah bill and the probability of replacing the item soon.
- Assuming extraction is a full refund. Guides warn that currency and socketed investments may not return.
- Applying another region’s numbers. Confirm the current client’s cap, failure result, terminology, and slot list.
A practical checklist before you press Enhance
- Identify whether you are changing the enhancement level, cap, socketed stats, Theostone system, or Arcana.
- Confirm the item slot and read every required material in the current interface.
- Set aside the listed Kina/Kinah cost, not just the stones.
- Decide how long the item will remain equipped and whether its investment can transfer.
- Review the displayed failure and refund language for the current level.
- After the result, verify the new level, remaining materials, and any changed property before making another attempt.
Bottom line for resource planning
Use Enhancement Stones for ordinary equipment-level increases, Breakthrough Stones for cap extension, Enhancement Scrolls for restricted slots, Manastones and Spirit Stones for socketed properties, Theostones for their separate equipment track, and Mysterious or Pure Crystals for Arcana. Kina/Kinah is the currency that makes many enhancement attempts possible. The safest spending decision combines the material’s function with the item’s slot, currency cost, expected lifespan, transfer path, and the exact rules shown by your regional client.
