Their best uses, setup requirements, and limitations are different, so the right choice depends on whether you need damage typing, party-wide coverage, or an automatic follow-up.
Choose the materia by the problem you need to solve
These three blue support materia occupy linked slots, but they do not perform the same job. Elemental changes the property of attacks or incoming damage. Magnify changes a spell’s target scope. Synergy creates an automatic spell follow-up from an ally. Decide first whether the encounter calls for an elemental weakness, group coverage, or extra damage that happens while another character is being directed.

Elemental materia: when to put it on a weapon or armor
What Elemental does on a weapon
Elemental must be linked to a second, elemental magic materia. In a linked weapon slot, that pairing adds the linked element to the character’s attacks. The element comes from the companion materia, so the pairing only helps when the selected element is useful against the target. A weapon link is therefore most valuable when you expect to use regular attacks or command abilities against an enemy vulnerable to that element.

Elemental’s weapon bonus increases as the materia levels. PowerPyx lists guide-reported weapon damage bonuses of 8%, 15%, and 23% across its three ranks. Those figures are reported by PowerPyx rather than independently tested measurements, so treat them as the guide’s stated progression. The percentage does not replace checking an enemy’s weakness: adding an element that a target resists can make the pairing a poor use of a linked slot.
What Elemental does on armor
Put the same linked pairing in armor when the encounter’s danger is incoming elemental damage rather than the need to change your attack property. The armor application grants resistance to the linked element. PowerPyx describes the defensive progression as reducing elemental damage by half at the first stage, preventing it at the next, and absorbing it at the highest stage. Because the benefit depends on the element actually being used against you, change the linked magic materia when the fight’s threat changes.
How to set up Elemental correctly
- Open the character’s materia equipment screen and choose a weapon or armor with a linked pair of slots.
- Place Elemental in one slot of the pair.
- Place the desired elemental magic materia in the adjacent linked slot.
- For a weapon, use the pairing when you want attacks to carry that element; for armor, use it when you expect that element to damage the wearer.
- Before committing the slot, confirm that the enemy’s weakness or attack element makes the pairing worthwhile.
If the slots are not linked, placing the two materia next to each other will not create the effect. A common mistake is to equip both materia on the same piece of equipment without a linked pair; the connection, not mere proximity, is what enables Elemental’s property.
Where to find Elemental
The first Elemental materia is in Chapter 6, in the Plate Mid-Level, Section H, around Sun Lamp 3. A second copy is available in Chapter 14, but that opportunity is conditional: the guides place it after completing all side quests and collecting the Guardian Angel letter. The GameSpot guide also clarifies that completing the Chapter 9 side-quest sets is not itself required for the Chapter 14 opportunity; the relevant requirement is completing the side quests through the point where the letter appears. See the location walkthroughs from Android Central and GameSpot.
Magnify materia: when spreading a spell is worth the trade-off
How Magnify changes a spell
Magnify works by linking to a spell materia. The linked spell can then reach multiple targets instead of remaining limited to one, but its effect is reduced when expanded. Gamer Guides reports reductions of 60%, 45%, and 25% at Magnify’s three ranks. The page was updated in 2026; these are guide-reported game mechanics, not a separate laboratory measurement.
The reduction is the price of coverage. A group Healing cast may restore less to each individual than a focused single-target cast, but it can stabilize several injured characters at once. A group Barrier cast can protect the whole party when spreading the defense is more important than maximizing its strength on one person. An offensive spell can hit several enemies, making the lower per-target effect worthwhile when foes are clustered.

Use Magnify for party recovery and defense
Link Magnify to Healing when more than one ally needs attention and spending separate turns on individual casts would leave the party exposed. It is especially useful after an attack that damages several characters at once. Link it to Barrier when you want defensive coverage across the party rather than a stronger effect on only one member. If one character is in immediate danger and the rest are healthy, remove or disable the expanded use and cast on a single target so the potency reduction does not work against your priority.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Magnify for groups of enemies
For an encounter with several enemies vulnerable to the same element, linking Magnify to the corresponding offensive spell lets one cast pressure the group. The trade-off is the same: each target receives a reduced effect compared with a focused cast. Keep the spell single-target when one durable enemy is the only meaningful threat, when the target is resistant to the chosen element, or when the lower effect would require more MP than the situation justifies.
Magnify setup and location
- Equip Magnify in one side of a linked materia pair.
- Place Healing, Barrier, or an elemental spell in the matching linked slot.
- Choose the expanded option when multiple allies or enemies are valid targets.
- Use the spell without expanded coverage when one target needs maximum effect.
The guide location is Chapter 9, in the Collapsed Expressway, at the second puzzle. Gamer Guides lists the location and the rank reductions in its Magnify materia guide.
Synergy materia: how the automatic follow-up works
What triggers Synergy
Synergy belongs on a supporting party member. Link Synergy to one of the elemental spells it supports, then control another character and issue an attack command. The equipped ally can follow that command with the linked spell automatically. This is a follow-up from the ally; it is not a way for the controlled character to cast for free.
The ally must have enough MP and ATB for the spell response. If either resource is insufficient, the follow-up cannot occur. The arrangement is therefore strongest when the supporting character is kept supplied and left in a position to contribute, while you spend your active commands on the character you are directly controlling.

The consulted guide limits Synergy’s linked spells to Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, and Poison. Choose the spell according to the enemies you expect to face, rather than assuming every offensive or defensive materia can be used with Synergy. The same guide reports that the follow-up uses the spell’s first rank, so leveling the linked spell does not change the automatic cast into a higher-rank version according to that source.

When Synergy is a good choice
Synergy is useful when you want extra elemental pressure without repeatedly switching control between characters. For example, you can direct one character’s attack commands while a second character supplies an automatic Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, or Poison response when resources allow. It adds value in fights where the supporting ally can keep MP and ATB available and where the chosen element is relevant to the enemy.
Do not treat Synergy as guaranteed damage on every command. The resource requirements, the supported-spell list, and the first-rank limitation all constrain its output. If the ally is out of MP or ATB, or if the linked element is a poor match for the encounter, another support materia may provide more dependable value.
How to obtain Synergy
Synergy can be purchased from Chadley in Chapter 8 after completing Battle Intel reports 6–9. The acquisition chapter and requirement are listed in the Android Central materia guide. The trigger and supported-spell details are covered in the Gamer Guides Synergy guide.
How to decide before an encounter
Start with the enemy’s damage and weakness profile
- Choose a weapon Elemental pairing when a target has a known elemental weakness and you expect the linked character to attack physically.
- Choose armor Elemental when a specific elemental attack is a major threat and reducing, preventing, or absorbing that damage is more valuable than an offensive link.
- Choose Magnify with an appropriate spell when several allies need Healing or Barrier, or when several enemies can be hit by the same offensive element.
- Choose Synergy when you want a supporting ally to answer the controlled character’s attacks automatically and can preserve that ally’s MP and ATB.
Account for the linked-slot opportunity cost
Each option uses a linked pair that could otherwise hold a different support combination. Elemental asks you to commit both the support materia and a specific elemental spell to one weapon or armor connection. Magnify commits the pair to a spell whose individual effect falls when expanded. Synergy commits the pair to a supported elemental spell and depends on another character’s resources. The best choice is the one whose limitation is least damaging in the particular fight.
Change the pairing when the battle changes
These materia are not permanent character identities. Swap the elemental magic linked to Elemental when the enemy’s weakness or incoming attack type changes. Remove Magnify for a focused cast when only one target matters. Change Synergy’s linked spell when the supported element no longer matches the encounter, while remembering that the automatic follow-up remains subject to MP, ATB, and the first-rank behavior reported by the guide.

Common mistakes and fixes
Both materia are equipped, but nothing happens
Check that the equipment has a genuinely linked pair of slots. Elemental, Magnify, and Synergy require the support materia and its partner to be connected; two adjacent slots that are not linked do not provide the intended effect.

The spell feels weaker than expected with Magnify
That is the built-in coverage trade-off. The reported reduction is 60%, 45%, or 25% depending on Magnify’s rank. Cast on one target without expanded coverage when maximum potency matters more than reaching several targets.
Synergy does not cast after an attack
Verify that the supporting character has enough MP and ATB, that Synergy is linked to Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, or Poison, and that the attack command was issued by the character you are controlling. The guide’s first-rank limitation also means the automatic response is not a substitute for manually selecting a higher-rank spell.
Elemental produces the wrong result
Confirm whether Elemental is installed on a weapon or armor. The weapon arrangement adds the linked element to attacks; the armor arrangement applies resistance to that element. Then check that the linked magic matches the enemy’s weakness or the incoming attack you are preparing for.
Practical loadout examples
Single elemental weakness
Link Elemental to the matching elemental magic materia on a weapon when one boss has a clear weakness and the character will spend much of the fight attacking. This turns the linked weapon into an elemental tool without requiring every attack command to begin with a spell selection.
Party-wide recovery after an area attack
Link Magnify to Healing when several party members are hurt at once. Accept the reduced per-target restoration in exchange for recovering the group in one cast; switch back to a focused cast if only one character remains in danger.
Automatic elemental assistance
Link Synergy to a supported spell on a character you are not controlling, then direct your active character’s attacks. Keep the support character’s MP and ATB available so the follow-up can occur, and choose the element that fits the current enemies.
