The Wandering Band announced it on August 16, 2022, with a planned September 19 release; the developer’s Steam archive later marked the update “OUT NOW” on September 19, 2022.
What the announcement trailer revealed
The trailer introduced The Lost Tundra as a new, cold region for the floating city-builder Airborne Kingdom. The developer recommended exploring it after completing the main game and establishing a stable kingdom: this was designed as a demanding extension for players who already understood how to keep their city supplied and aloft.
Ben Wander’s August 16, 2022 official Steam announcement put the central scarcity plainly: “There is no Food, Water, or Coal, so maintaining your kingdom is a difficult task.” The trailer’s premise is therefore more than reaching a new place; it is managing a city where basic supplies are unavailable locally.
How the tundra changes city management
Cold puts the city’s systems under pressure
Freezing conditions reduce the efficiency of structures. The update also makes cold affect Lift, Propulsion, and Resource buildings for the first time, tying exposure directly to the city’s ability to remain airborne and travel. As Ben Wander explained in the announcement, “For the first time, we’re impacting Lift, Propulsion, and Resource buildings, so falling out of the sky is not out of the question.”

That combination changes the usual management problem: a city must cope with shortages while preserving the systems that support its weight and movement. The tundra’s difficulty is thus both logistical and structural.
Furnaces trade protection for cost
New Furnace buildings mitigate the effects of the cold, but they consume resources and add weight. Heating the city is not a free or automatic solution: players have to decide where Furnaces will do the most good and whether extra coverage justifies the additional mass and fuel demand.
- Protection versus burden: Furnaces help counter cold-related efficiency losses, but add weight and resource consumption.
- Fuel versus salvage: Workers may be assigned to increase Coal production or scavenge construction resources.
- Building versus operating: New infrastructure also needs workers to run it, competing with other jobs.
These tradeoffs explain why the developer positioned the region as a challenge for an established kingdom. A player must balance thermal protection against the resources, labor, and lift capacity needed to sustain it.
Exploration rewards and release status
The announcement said hidden locations in The Lost Tundra unlock cosmetics and customizations. It also noted that not all rewards would be revealed, so the announcement does not establish a complete list of what players can find.

The update is no longer upcoming: The Wandering Band’s Steam announcement archive lists “Airborne Kingdom: The Lost Tundra OUT NOW” on September 19, 2022. The August announcement described the plan at the time; the later archive entry records the release.

Nintendo’s US Nintendo Switch listing identifies the base game as a digital edition, with single-system play and TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. That listing confirms Switch availability for Airborne Kingdom; it does not establish a physical game card or a separate Lost Tundra purchase. Steam’s current game listing identifies The Wandering Band LLC as developer and publisher and lists the game and soundtrack as digital purchases.
