Borderlands 4 has six reported damage types: Kinetic, Incendiary, Shock, Corrosive, Cryo, and Radiation. For a quick matchup, read the enemy’s health bar: use Incendiary against red flesh, Shock against blue shields, and Corrosive against yellow armor. Kinetic is the neutral fallback, while Cryo and Radiation add useful effects beyond their damage matchups.
Read the health bar before choosing an element
Health-bar color is a practical cue for the enemy’s current defense: red indicates flesh, blue indicates shields, and yellow indicates armor. Match the element to that bar rather than assuming every enemy in a particular faction has the same weakness. The guides consulted do not establish a complete, reliable enemy-by-enemy weakness list.

- Red bar: Incendiary is the clearest recommended match.
- Blue bar: Shock is the clearest recommended match.
- Yellow bar: Corrosive is the primary recommendation; Cryo may also be useful.
These are practical guide recommendations, not independently reproduced in-game test results. Damage can also be affected by difficulty and game updates.
What each of the six damage types does
| Damage type | Effect and best use | Practical example |
|---|---|---|
| Kinetic | Standard, non-elemental damage. GamesRadar describes it as a neutral option that deals 100% damage across health types. | Use it when you lack a useful elemental match or prefer not to switch weapons. |
| Incendiary | Fire damage that can apply burning damage over time. Recommended against flesh. | Against a red flesh bar, switch to an Incendiary weapon if it is otherwise a comparable choice. |
| Shock | Electrical damage associated with damaging shields. Recommended against shields. | Against a blue shield bar, Shock is the clearest elemental match. |
| Corrosive | Acid damage that can apply damage over time. Recommended against armor; GamesRadar says its damage-over-time lasts longer than that of the other elemental types. | Against a yellow armor bar, use Corrosive as the primary elemental choice. |
| Cryo | Ice damage; applying enough can freeze an enemy. GamesRadar describes it as useful against armor, though less effective there than Corrosive. | Consider Cryo when freezing utility is helpful or Corrosive is unavailable. |
| Radiation | Can create an aura and cause explosions when affected enemies die. GamesRadar describes it as useful against flesh and shields. | Against clustered enemies, a death explosion may help spread damage beyond the initial target. |

The cited guide does not establish matching percentages here for every element, health type, or difficulty. For your current playthrough, treat the enemy’s displayed bar and the game’s current behavior as more relevant than a percentage reported in an older guide.
Where Cryo and Radiation fit
Cryo: damage plus control
Cryo’s clearest additional value is its freeze effect: applying enough Cryo can freeze an enemy. That control can make it a useful tactical option, and GamesRadar also describes Cryo as useful against armor, though less effective there than Corrosive. Its performance against flesh is not settled by the cited guides: GamesRadar describes it as comparable to Kinetic, while Nerd’s Chalk labels it weak against flesh. Avoid relying on an exact Cryo-versus-flesh multiplier without checking the current game.

Radiation: pressure on groups
Radiation is associated with an aura and explosions when an affected enemy dies. GamesRadar describes it as useful against flesh and shields, but its group value is the key practical distinction: an explosion can potentially damage nearby enemies. The available guides do not establish a complete set of Radiation multipliers for every health bar.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the matchup without overcommitting to a chart
- Check the target’s health-bar color: red for flesh, blue for shields, yellow for armor.
- Choose Incendiary for flesh, Shock for shields, or Corrosive for armor when you have a comparable weapon.
- Choose Cryo when freezing utility is valuable, or Radiation when its aura and potential death explosions suit the encounter.
- If none of those options fits your loadout, use Kinetic as the neutral fallback described by GamesRadar.
- If the result seems inconsistent, rely on the current game UI and your observed matchup rather than assuming a faction-wide weakness. Difficulty and updates may affect the damage chart.
For the reported type effects and figures, see GamesRadar’s Borderlands 4 elements guide. For another health-bar summary, see Nerd’s Chalk’s damage-type guide, updated September 12, 2025. Their Cryo-versus-flesh descriptions differ, so that specific matchup remains uncertain in these sources.
