How many characters are in Mario Kart World?
The current checked roster is 50 unique playable racers, according to roster guides updated July 1 and October 2, 2026. Operation Sports divides them into 24 main drivers and 26 creature or enemy drivers; Nintendo Life’s guide also counts 50 total, with 18 unlockable characters and 32 available from the start. Nintendo Life’s full roster and unlock guide and Operation Sports’ roster summary provide the detailed lists.
This is a checked guide count, not a roster total announced by Nintendo. Nintendo’s official game page names examples of familiar and unusual racers, but does not present an exhaustive character list.

Creature and enemy drivers
The other 26 roster slots are creature, enemy, or background-derived racers. Nintendo’s April 17, 2025 Mario Kart World Direct announcement explicitly called out Goomba, Spike, and Cow as playable examples: “Looking for a racer that’s a little more offbeat? Try taking Goomba, Spike and even Cow for a test drive.”
The current guides’ unlock lists also name Coin Coffer, Conkdor, Chargin’ Chuck, Cheep Cheep, Fish Bone, Dolphin, Cataquack, Peepa, Pianta, and Swoop among these unusual drivers. Which characters need to be unlocked?
Eighteen of the 50 characters are unlockable, while 32 are available from the beginning. Seven main drivers unlock through Grand Prix cups: Daisy, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, Bowser Jr., King Boo, Birdo, and Lakitu. Operation Sports says first place is not required; the character becomes selectable after the cup’s fourth race. Consult the current guide for the cup assigned to each driver.
Creature-driver unlocks use transformations triggered by Kamek or the UFO. The UFO method is available in Free Roam in Version 1.3.0 and later. Individual requirements are listed in the Nintendo Life unlock guide; check that list for the specific character you want.

Are costumes counted as characters?
No. Costumes are alternate appearances for a racer, not additional unique roster entries. Nintendo says Dash Food can sometimes unlock outfits, and current roster guides separate outfits from character slots. The 50-character total counts the underlying playable racers.
Is the roster still current?
The count is current through Version 1.8.0, released September 9, 2026. Nintendo’s Version 1.8.0 update notes describe new classic courses and Knockout Tour rallies; the current roster guide reports that the update did not add drivers. Those update notes are not an exhaustive character list.

Characters visible in the game world, suggested by signs, rumored, or hoped for are not confirmed playable racers unless they appear in the selectable roster. Some familiar franchise characters are absent from the checked roster, but that is only a statement about the version covered by these guides. Nintendo has not settled whether future updates will add more racers.

Mario Kart World is Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive software and launched June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s launch-era announcement listed a US regular price of $79.99; that is a dated price, not a current retailer quote. Online features require a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Nintendo Support says players must use the same game version to play together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Diddy Kong in Mario Kart World?
Diddy Kong is not listed among the confirmed playable characters in the current checked roster. Whether Nintendo adds more racers later remains unresolved.
