There is no single official strength ranking for Eevee’s eight evolutions. This list ranks them as a broad, game-agnostic editorial comparison: it weighs battle usefulness, flexibility and how readily each can fill a role, rather than claiming a competitive tier order in any one game. The order is a judgment, not a permanent verdict; a specific game, ruleset or team can change which evolution is strongest.
The eight are Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon and Sylveon. The Pokémon Company’s Eevee evolution feature names all eight, and the official Pokédex identifies their types. Types help explain what a Pokémon can do, but they do not establish an overall strength order by themselves.
How this strength ranking works
Because the source material does not provide matched competitive results for all eight in one game and format, the placements below are editorial rather than a claim about tournament tiers. They are intended as a broad comparison of battle roles and practical flexibility—not as a substitute for checking the ruleset you play.
- Battle role: How clearly an evolution can contribute through offense, defense or support.
- Flexibility: Whether it can plausibly serve more than one purpose, rather than relying on one narrow matchup.
- Context: Type matchups and the available moves or mechanics can shift results between games. Story-mode usefulness is not treated as identical to competitive strength.
For competitive play, compare all eight within the same game and ruleset. Smogon’s Scarlet and Violet entry for Eevee addresses Eevee itself, not the evolved forms, so it cannot establish their relative order. Competitive tiers and rulesets can also change.

All eight Eevee evolutions, ranked
1. Sylveon
Sylveon takes the top spot for its clear Fairy-type battle identity and the potential to contribute as more than a straightforward attacker, depending on the game’s move options. That combination makes it a strong all-purpose pick in this broad comparison. It is not automatically the best choice in every matchup or ruleset.
2. Umbreon
Umbreon ranks highly for a distinct defensive role. A team that needs a sturdier option may value that more than raw attacking pressure, and Dark typing gives it a defined matchup profile. Its value depends on the available moves and on whether the team benefits from a defensive slot.

3. Vaporeon
Vaporeon’s Water typing gives it a useful, familiar role, and it can be a flexible choice for a team seeking a Water-type option. It falls below the top two here because this game-agnostic ranking rewards having a particularly clear role or broader utility; a specific game’s moves and matchups can narrow that gap.
4. Espeon
Espeon is a Psychic-type option that can bring offensive pressure. Its placement reflects a balance between that focused role and the matchup dependence that comes with relying on it. It can move up or down when a particular game’s mechanics or team needs favor Psychic-type offense.
Rank #3

5. Jolteon
Jolteon’s Electric typing makes it an appealing choice when a team wants that kind of pressure. Its role is easy to understand, but a focused strength is not the same as universal usefulness: opponents and the game’s available options determine how often it can make that pressure count.
6. Leafeon
Leafeon brings a Grass-type role, which can be valuable when that coverage fits the team. Its ranking is lower because a type’s usefulness depends heavily on the matchups being faced, and this broad comparison does not assign it a game-specific niche or competitive placement.

7. Glaceon
Glaceon offers an Ice-type option, but that alone does not make it a stronger overall pick than the evolutions above. Its usefulness depends on the battle context and the tools its game provides; choose it when its particular role fits, not simply because a ranking assigns it a position.
8. Flareon
Flareon rounds out this editorial order. Its Fire-type identity can suit a team that needs that role, but the available evidence does not support a claim that it is objectively weakest across every game or format. The bottom position is a relative judgment within this broad list, not a universal competitive verdict.

What can change the order?
- The game: Evolution methods, battle mechanics and available moves differ among Pokémon games. The official Pokémon feature describes methods such as raising Eevee’s friendship under particular conditions for Espeon and Sylveon, as well as a location-based method for Leafeon in the game context it covers; check the instructions for the specific game you are playing.
- The format: Competitive rules, permitted Pokémon and tier placements are format-specific and can change over time.
- Your team: A Pokémon that fills a missing role or covers a key matchup can be stronger for your team than one ranked higher in a general list.
Where to check Eeveelution card listings
If you are also collecting the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the official Sword & Shield—Evolving Skies card list includes Eevee and cards featuring all eight evolutions. A set checklist confirms which Pokémon appear in the set; it does not guarantee that a particular booster contains a specific card or establish current prices or availability.
