From Charizard to Skeledirge, the nine main-series Fire-type starter lines end in very different Pokémon. This ranking compares their final evolutions by design and identity, typing and strategic character, and how distinct each feels across the franchise—not by a single competitive-strength score. The order is editorial, so a different weighting can produce a different favorite.
Which Pokémon are included?
This list ranks the ordinary final evolution of the Fire-type starter line introduced in each of the first nine main-series generations. The Pokémon Company’s official Pokédex catalog gives the sequence and National Pokédex numbers. Typhlosion’s Hisuian regional form is excluded; the list uses its standard form, as shown in the official Typhlosion entry.
- Charizard (#006), Generation I
- Typhlosion (#157), Generation II
- Blaziken (#257), Generation III
- Infernape (#392), Generation IV
- Emboar (#500), Generation V
- Delphox (#655), Generation VI
- Incineroar (#727), Generation VII
- Cinderace (#815), Generation VIII
- Skeledirge (#911), Generation IX
The ranking
9. Emboar
Emboar has a clear, imposing fire-and-brawler identity, but its design is the least distinctive to me in this group: it continues the Fire/Fighting direction already represented by Blaziken and Infernape. That overlap puts it last in a ranking focused on variety across the full set, not on whether it is a capable Pokémon in a particular game.
8. Delphox
Delphox stands out for taking the starter line toward a mystical, spellcaster-like identity rather than another straightforward beast or athlete. Its lower placement reflects a personal design preference: the concept is memorable, but the final form’s silhouette is less immediately striking to me than the entries above it.

7. Typhlosion
Standard Typhlosion makes a strong case through simplicity. It is a clean, focused Fire-type design rather than a more elaborate hybrid, and that restraint gives it a lasting identity. It ranks below the more visually or conceptually unusual options here; this placement does not include Hisuian Typhlosion, which is a separate regional form.
6. Infernape
Infernape’s agile martial-artist identity gives it a sharper personality than a generic fire-powered fighter. Its Fire/Fighting typing is confirmed in the official Chimchar-line Pokédex entry. The combination fits its concept, though this ranking gives a small edge to entries whose final forms feel less closely tied to an existing starter design pattern.

5. Cinderace
Cinderace turns the Fire starter into a football-inspired athlete, a specific theme that makes its identity easy to read. That strong concept earns it a place in the middle of the list. It does not rank higher because the design’s sport motif is less appealing to me than the more unusual transformations among the top four.
4. Blaziken
Blaziken is one of the most convincing action-oriented designs in the roster: its fighting-artist concept and Fire/Fighting identity feel like a unified whole. Its position also reflects the value of a final form that makes a decisive change from the starter’s earlier stages. It ranks below the top three because those entries offer a more distinctive overall mix of concept and franchise identity for my taste.

3. Skeledirge
Skeledirge earns its high placement by making a memorable leap from a small crocodilian starter to a large, ghostly singer. Its Fire/Ghost identity is reflected in the official Crocalor Pokédex entry, which documents Crocalor’s evolution into Skeledirge. The unusual combination of creature concept and performance theme gives the final form a strong sense of its own character.
2. Incineroar
Incineroar commits fully to a pro-wrestler persona, making its final form feel like a character rather than simply a larger version of its earlier stages. Its theatrical, intimidating identity is one of the clearest concepts in this group. It narrowly misses the top spot because the winner combines an equally recognizable silhouette with the franchise’s most enduring Fire-starter identity.

1. Charizard
Charizard takes first for its instantly recognizable dragon-like silhouette and straightforward expression of the Fire-starter fantasy. Its prominence in the franchise makes it an easy choice for this editorial ranking, though that is not evidence of a measured popularity lead or superior competitive performance. The Pokémon Company’s catalog identifies Charizard as the first-generation line’s final species, #006.

This is a franchise-wide editorial order, not an official Pokémon ranking. The Pokédex catalog and individual species entries document species facts, including types and weaknesses, but do not establish a universal cross-generation battle winner. Typing matters, yet an additional type is not automatically an advantage: it can bring useful matchups as well as new weaknesses.

Competitive strength depends on the particular game, available moves, ruleset, and format. A defensible battle ranking would need to name those conditions and compare current evidence within them. This list instead weighs design and identity alongside broad strategic character, without claiming that any one starter is objectively strongest.
