Your weapon’s ammo label is the key to compatibility; the game’s weapon-family names and ammo categories do not map one-to-one.
All ammo types in Once Human
The categories below are those listed by the community ammunition reference. Treat them as a practical guide, not a guaranteed current-patch catalog: ammunition names, recipes and availability can change between updates or scenarios.

Why weapon and ammo labels do not line up exactly
The official Once Human Weapon & Gear Guide, published May 16, 2024, describes eight broad weapon families: Handgun, Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Light Machine Gun, Crossbow, Heavy Artillery and Melee Weapon. The ammo reference instead groups ammunition under labels such as Pistol, Rifle and SMG, and additionally lists arrows and grenades. Game8’s 2025 “List of All Ammo” uses its own categories, including “Others.” These are source-specific naming schemes, not a single perfectly aligned taxonomy.
For the direct question “what ammo does my weapon use,” inspect the weapon’s ammo indicator or details in the current game and match that displayed category. Melee is a weapon family in the official guide, but it is not a firearm-ammunition category in the ammo listing.

How to craft ammo in Once Human
The community ammunition reference describes crafting at a Supplies Workbench and looting ammunition from Storage Crates. It lists primary, intermediate and advanced Supplies Workbenches, with higher ammunition tiers associated with Memetic unlocks. Because exact unlock paths and recipes may shift, use the current in-game Memetics and workbench recipe as the authority.
- Check the weapon’s ammo category in its in-game details.
- Open Memetics and review the ammunition-related unlocks available to your character and scenario.
- Use an available Supplies Workbench and select a recipe compatible with that ammo category and your unlocked tier.
- Confirm the materials and batch yield shown in the current recipe before crafting.
- For ammunition you do not want to craft, search Storage Crates while exploring.
The reference describes Ammunition I, II and III as unlocks for non-AP tiers, and Advanced Ammunition I, II and III for AP tiers. Consider those names and progression a guide to check in-game rather than definitive instructions for every current scenario.

Standard and armor-piercing ammo tiers
The community reference distinguishes standard rounds from armor-piercing (AP) ammunition and names copper, steel and tungsten tiers. It reports the following damage modifiers, but these are historical reference values from a community-maintained page that could not be independently verified; they are not confirmed current-patch stats.

Do not assume these percentages, material costs or batch yields apply to your current version. The reference also describes different recipes and quantities by weapon class, but exact recipes and quantities should be read from the live workbench rather than inferred from that unverified listing.

There is no universally best ammunition choice established across weapons, enemies, resource budgets and versions. Compare the options using the recipe and weapon information available in your game:
