For a first ARK: Survival Ascended server, choose The Island. It is the clearest learning map: a mid-sized main landmass with nearby satellite islands, short travel routes and terrain that is relatively walkable early on. Choose Ragnarok when you want substantially more land, Valguero when you prefer dense biome variety, Aberration or Scorched Earth for punishing survival, and Extinction for an endgame-focused PvE campaign. The Center is the other established free option. Paid maps and several announced expansions need an ownership and release-date check before you commit your server budget.
Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Ascended servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide covers the maps reported for ASA as of , separates playable releases from uncertain roadmap entries, and gives a practical way to match a map to your players, hardware, schedule and budget.

There are no reliable published player-count statistics in the available material, so claims about a map having the largest population should be treated as anecdotal. Ragnarok is repeatedly described as the usual second server, which can indicate a broader community, but it is not a measured population ranking.
The established maps and what playing them feels like
The Island: the safest default for a new server
The Island is the default recommendation for first-timers because its geography is easy to read. It has one principal landmass plus satellite islands, and the distances between early objectives are comparatively short. That makes it easier for a group to learn gathering, shelter building, taming and travel without spending most of a session crossing the map.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It is also the least risky choice when your server roster contains mixed experience levels. Veterans can still set their own goals, while newcomers have a manageable area in which to learn controls and survival routines. If you are unsure whether your community will stay with ARK, start here rather than paying for an expansion or committing everyone to a specialist challenge.
The Center: a free map built around water crossings
The Center is a mid-sized free map split into islands by surrounding water. That layout changes how a tribe plans bases and supply routes: locations that look close on a map may still require a crossing, and a group that dislikes water travel may find the divisions more restrictive than The Island’s connected starting areas.
Choose it when you want a free alternative with a stronger island-hopping identity. It is a reasonable second map for players who already understand the basic survival loop but do not need Ragnarok’s much larger land footprint.
Scorched Earth: survival pressure from the environment
Scorched Earth is a desert map in which water scarcity and heat drive play. Those pressures are not cosmetic; they affect route planning, the timing of trips and how much preparation a server expects before leaving a safe base.
It suits experienced players who want environmental hazards to remain important after the opening hours. New groups can play it, but the map removes some of the margin for error that makes The Island a better tutorial. Set expectations before launch: a server that wants relaxed building and exploration may find the desert rules tiring, while a group seeking a deliberate survival test may regard them as the point.

Aberration: the specialist challenge
Aberration is an underground map and is rated hard for new players in current map guides. Its enclosed, subterranean identity makes it a very different campaign from an open island or desert. Navigation and survival decisions carry more weight, and mistakes are less forgiving for an inexperienced tribe.

Use it for a challenge server or as a later campaign after players have learned the fundamentals elsewhere. If half the roster has never played ARK, do not make Aberration the blind starting point unless everyone explicitly wants a high-difficulty onboarding experience.
Extinction: a ruined Earth and a PvE endgame choice
Extinction takes place on a ruined Earth and includes Titans. One current guide names it as its preferred endgame PvE map. That recommendation is a goal-based judgment, not a universal ranking: it makes sense for a tribe that has already learned the game and wants a campaign built around late-stage objectives, but it is not the most accessible introduction.
Pick Extinction when your group is organizing a PvE progression server and is comfortable treating the map as a destination rather than a tutorial. If players are still learning basic survival, the Island gives them a smoother first season.
Ragnarok: the large, commonly chosen second server
Ragnarok is reported at roughly 2.5 times The Island’s land area and uses Norse theming. The extra space changes the social rhythm of a server: tribes can spread out, exploration takes longer and a central meeting point becomes more valuable than it would be on a compact map.

Multiple guides call Ragnarok the most common second server. That does not prove a larger population, because no player-count data is available, but it does make Ragnarok a sensible choice when your existing community wants more room after The Island. Select it for exploration and long-term expansion, not because a guide’s popularity claim guarantees an active public server.
Valguero: dense variety without a sprawling footprint
Valguero is reported at about 63 square kilometres. Sources describe it as dense rather than sprawling, with biomes positioned close together. In practical terms, it is the compromise between The Island’s approachable scale and Ragnarok’s broad land area.
It fits groups that want environmental variety and frequent changes of scenery but do not want every expedition to become a long-distance journey. It is also a strong choice when several tribes need distinct regions without the enormous travel distances associated with a much larger map.
Paid and recently released content
Astraeos
Astraeos is listed as a paid expansion map at $14.99 by a secondary listing. Treat that figure as a listing, not a guaranteed current price: confirm the amount, platform and regional currency in the official storefront before buying. A server owner should verify that every intended player can access the map before selecting it as the campaign’s home.
Lost Colony
Lost Colony is also listed as paid content, with a secondary source showing $29.99. The same qualification applies: the price needs confirmation in the storefront, and the map should not be chosen until your group has checked ownership requirements. Do not assume that a server administrator’s purchase grants access to every connected player.

Genesis Part 1 / Genesis Ascended Part 1
Several reports place Genesis Part 1’s release in early July 2026, but they disagree on the exact day: July 2, July 3 and July 4 have all been stated. Transfer access was listed to open on September 4, 2026. Because those dates come from secondary reporting and conflict, use the live game client and Studio Wildcard’s current announcements to establish what is playable on your platform.
For a server planned after October 14, 2026, the important distinction is between a reported release and a confirmed, currently accessible build. Check that the map appears in your server provider’s map selector, that the required content is installed, and that transfers work as intended before advertising a Genesis campaign.
Upcoming, undated or conflicting maps
Roadmap information is especially volatile. The following entries should be treated as planned or reported content, not guaranteed launch dates.
| Map or content | What has been reported | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Dragontopia | Paid expansion; an Expansion Pass is listed at $29.99. Day-one dragons have been reported live. One fan site lists a full map-wide skyworld rollout for December 9, 2026. | The rollout date and the exact scope of day-one content are unresolved. |
| Fjordur | Dates range from a December 2026 fan-site claim to “target” and estimates of 2027 or later. | There is no confirmed release date. Older October 2025 dates are out of date. |
| Genesis Part 2 | One source lists Q2 2027; another estimates around November 2026 from release spacing. | Neither date is confirmed. |
| Crystal Isles | A free remaster has been reported. | No firm date is available. |
| Atlantis | Listed as planned content. | Status is TBA. |
If your server depends on one of these maps, keep a fallback map ready and do not sell a launch date to your community until the official storefront or Studio Wildcard channels show a confirmed release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a map for your server
1. Identify the group’s experience level
- Mostly new players: choose The Island. It minimizes the amount of specialist knowledge required at the start.
- Mixed experience: choose The Island for a first season, or Valguero if veterans want more biome variety while beginners still need short trips.
- Experienced survival players: consider Scorched Earth or Aberration. Agree in advance that environmental pressure and difficulty are features, not bugs.
- Established PvE tribe: consider Extinction if the group specifically wants a ruined-Earth, Titan-centered endgame campaign.
2. Decide how much space your community really needs
Ragnarok supplies the most clearly reported land-area advantage: about 2.5 times The Island. That is useful for large communities and long campaigns, but a larger map also increases travel time and can make casual players feel isolated. Valguero’s approximately 63-square-kilometre, close-biome layout is better when you want variety without a sprawling world. The Island and The Center are easier to keep socially connected because neither is presented as an enormous landmass.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
3. Match the map to your travel tolerance
- Choose The Island when short early routes and walkable starts matter.
- Choose The Center when water-separated islands are an attraction rather than an inconvenience.
- Choose Valguero for frequent biome changes without long cross-map journeys.
- Choose Ragnarok when exploration distance and open-ended expansion are part of the appeal.
- Choose Scorched Earth when preparing for heat and water scarcity is central to the challenge.
4. Set a firm content budget
| Budget approach | Maps to consider | Verification needed |
|---|---|---|
| No map purchase | The Island or The Center | Confirm that the server configuration offers the free map you want |
| Single paid expansion | Astraeos or Lost Colony | Check the official regional storefront price and each player’s ownership |
| Genesis campaign | Genesis Part 1, subject to current availability | Confirm the live release state, installation and transfer rules |
| Roadmap purchase | Dragontopia or another announced map | Do not pay or advertise around an unconfirmed date; verify the storefront listing |
The reported prices for Astraeos and Lost Colony are secondary listings and may change by platform, region or promotion. No price is established here for Genesis content, and the listed $29.99 Expansion Pass figure for Dragontopia should likewise be checked before purchase.
5. Plan around population without pretending to have statistics
Guides frequently call Ragnarok the usual second server, so it may be easier to find a community familiar with it. That is not a measured population result. Since no published player-count data is available, evaluate your own community: ask how many players will be online at the same time, whether tribes want to live near one another, and whether a quiet frontier is desirable.

- Open the official storefront for your platform and verify the map’s current listing, price and release status.
- Check Studio Wildcard’s latest announcement for date changes or delayed features.
- In the server control panel, confirm that the map appears as a selectable installation rather than only as a roadmap entry.
- Install the map on a test instance and have at least one player connect before taking reservations.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing difficulty before choosing your audience
Aberration and Scorched Earth can be excellent challenge maps, but their defining pressures can drive away players who expected a relaxed first server. Publish the map’s difficulty and environmental demands in the server description so new arrivals know what they are joining.
Confusing a large map with a better map
Ragnarok’s reported 2.5-times-The-Island land area is an advantage only if your group wants long exploration routes and room to spread out. For a small, social tribe, Valguero’s dense layout or The Island’s shorter travel may create more actual playtime together.
Assuming a listed date is a launch guarantee
Genesis Part 1’s conflicting July dates demonstrate why an exact day should not be copied from a single secondary listing. Fjordur, Genesis Part 2 and Dragontopia have even less certainty. Use “announced,” “reported” or “TBA” in community planning until the official channels and your server panel agree.
Buying before checking player access
Paid maps create a coordination problem: the server owner can select content, but every intended player may still need the relevant entitlement. Confirm access for the whole roster and check regional pricing before committing to a paid campaign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPromising unsupported population claims
There are no published statistics here for active players, sales or server counts. Describe Ragnarok as commonly named as a second server, not as definitively the most populated map.
Quick Recap
A practical server-planning checklist
- Write down the player count, experience mix and preferred campaign length.
- Select The Island for a first-time group unless everyone explicitly requests a harder map.
- Use Ragnarok for maximum reported land area, or Valguero for dense biome variety.
- Use The Center when a free, island-separated layout is the priority.
- Use Scorched Earth or Aberration only after explaining their survival difficulty.
- Use Extinction when the server’s stated goal is endgame PvE and Titan-focused progression.
- Verify every paid price and entitlement in the official storefront.
- Verify release status, installation and transfers in the live client and official announcements.
- Keep a backup map and a pre-launch server backup.
- Tell players which facts are confirmed and which roadmap dates remain provisional.
