The safest way to learn Arma 3 is to verify every key in your own Controls menu before joining a serious mission. Community key lists disagree, presets can change bindings, and some actions may remain assigned to an old key after you remap them. Once your controls are confirmed, start with a clearly briefed team mode or cooperative scenario; move to Zeus after you understand how missions are assembled.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma 3 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide explains how to audit and remap controls, what the main listed game modes are, how Zeus differs from ordinary soldier play, and how to choose a first session without relying on an unverified key chart.

Why Arma 3 key lists are unreliable
There is no single community key list that should be treated as an authoritative Arma 3 manual. Different guides publish different defaults: one commonly circulated list assigns weapon switching to 1, 2 and 3, reload to R, and Reveal/Lock/Lase to T; another lists Space for weapon switching and Left Alt for freelook. A community chart also gives Left Ctrl + C for the Walk/Run toggle. Those contradictions mean you should regard such lists as hints, not facts about your installation.
Arma 3 can use different presets and custom bindings. Your edition, profile and previous changes can all affect what appears in the menu. Read the binding shown beside each action in your current build, then test it in a low-risk session. This is more reliable than memorising a list copied from a different preset or patch.

Check and remap controls before your first mission
Use the in-game menu labelled Controls. The surrounding menu can differ by screen or build, so look for that label from the main menu or pause screen rather than relying on a fixed sequence of buttons.
- Open Controls. Scroll through every control category instead of checking only movement. Arma 3 missions can require weapon handling, view control, communication and interaction commands that are not obvious from a basic movement test.
- Record the displayed binding. Write down or photograph the key shown for an action you need. The value in your own menu is the one that applies to your profile.
- Check for duplicate assignments. If a key already performs another action, the game may keep both assignments. A Steam discussion reports that remapping can be slow because the old binding is not always overwritten. Look for the previous key and clear it manually when the interface allows.
- Choose a starting preset. A community keybind guide recommends the Apex preset as a useful starting point, but it is still a recommendation rather than a universal standard. After selecting a preset, inspect the important actions again.
- Remap only the first essentials. Change controls that conflict with your keyboard, accessibility needs or mouse layout before changing everything. Large-scale remapping makes it harder to diagnose a mistake.
- Apply or save the changes. Leave the menu only after the game confirms the new assignment. Reopen Controls to make sure the value persisted.
- Test in a safe environment. Use a practice or low-consequence mission and press each changed key once. Confirm that the character, weapon or view responds as expected.
- Keep a short reference note. Until the layout becomes familiar, keep a list of your own bindings beside the keyboard. Update it whenever you change presets.
The first actions worth auditing
The following actions are particularly important because conflicting community charts mention them or because a beginner is likely to need them early. Their exact keys are intentionally left to your Controls menu.
| Action | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Movement and stance | Walking, running and any walk/run toggle shown by your profile | Speed changes affect noise, stamina and how quickly you can react. |
| Weapon selection | Primary, secondary and other weapon slots | Community lists disagree about whether number keys or another key performs switching. |
| Reload | The reload command and any alternative binding | A familiar key prevents a long pause when a magazine is empty. |
| Freelook and view control | Freelook, optics and camera/view commands | Looking around without turning your body is useful for scanning. |
| Reveal, lock and lase | Each command separately, if your profile exposes them | These functions can be listed together in guides but may have distinct entries in the menu. |
| Interaction | The action used to interact with objects, vehicles or mission elements | Mission briefings often assume you can manipulate equipment or enter an object. |
| Communication | Voice, text and any team or group channels available in your setup | Team modes depend on receiving instructions and reporting information. |
Build confidence without memorising disputed defaults
Learn controls by function rather than by an online sequence. Start with movement, view control, weapon selection and reload. Add interaction and communication when a mission requires them. For every action, use the same three-part check:
- Locate: find the action in Controls and note the assigned key.
- Perform: press it in a safe mission and watch for the expected response.
- Recover: know how to cancel or undo the action before using it in a live match.
If a command does nothing, return to Controls rather than assuming the game is broken. Check whether the key is assigned to a different action, whether a modifier is required, and whether you edited the active profile. If the old binding still appears, remove it before assigning the new one. Save, reopen the menu and test again.

What game modes are available?
A beginner guide lists Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Standard Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Last Man Standing among the modes players can host and join. That list is explicitly not complete. Bohemia Interactive’s Bootcamp material also identifies Altis Life as one of the popular modes available, while noting that most popular modes are player-created. Availability, server rules and mission names can therefore change between builds and communities.
| Mode or family | Player role and objective shape | What a beginner should expect | Evidence and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture the Flag | Team-versus-team format built around opposing flags or equivalent objectives. | Look for a clear briefing explaining flag locations, scoring and respawn rules; server implementations can differ. | Named in a third-party beginner guide; the guide says its list is incomplete. |
| Team Deathmatch | Team-versus-team combat where the mission defines scoring and respawn conditions. | Useful for learning movement and communication when the server provides a simple briefing. | Named in the same third-party guide. |
| Standard Deathmatch | Combat against other players without the team structure implied by Team Deathmatch. | Read the mission rules before spawning because equipment, scoring and lives are mission-specific. | Named in the same third-party guide. |
| King of the Hill | A contest organized around control of a designated area or “hill.” | Confirm how the server awards time or points and what happens after death. | Named in the same third-party guide. |
| Last Man Standing | A survival format in which remaining players determine the result. | Expect a higher penalty for mistakes; learn the controls in a less costly mode first. | Named in the same third-party guide. |
| Altis Life | A persistent role-play style built around the Altis setting and the rules of a particular community. | Read the server’s conduct, economy and role instructions before joining; the name alone does not define every server rule. | Listed by Bohemia Interactive’s Bootcamp page as a popular available mode, most of which are player-created. |
| Zeus | A Game Master role that curates a scenario through a real-time 3D editor rather than functioning only as an ordinary soldier. | Choose the soldier or Game Master role deliberately; the two experiences use different responsibilities and controls. | Described in Bohemia Interactive’s Field Manual; older mode labels may have changed. |
| Antistasi | Persistent cooperative guerrilla warfare against occupying and invading forces. | Expect a longer-running cooperative campaign and read the mission’s progression rules before taking a task. | Described in Bohemia Interactive community news as a community cooperative scenario. |
How to choose a first mode
Choose a structured team mode when you want quick practice
Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch give you an obvious team context. Before joining, read the server briefing and identify the win condition, spawn rules, permitted equipment and communication channel. The mode name is not enough to predict those details because the mission maker controls the implementation.

Choose a simpler combat loop when you are still testing keys
Standard Deathmatch can reduce the amount of team coordination you need while you confirm movement, weapon selection and reload. It can also punish unfamiliar controls quickly, so use a server with a clear briefing and reasonable consequences rather than treating the mode as a substitute for training.
Choose King of the Hill after learning movement and map reading
A hill-control mission adds positional decisions to basic shooting. Confirm how the mission defines control, scoring and respawning. If the briefing is unclear, leave and choose another server; learning an undocumented rule while fighting is frustrating and does not tell you whether your controls are configured correctly.

Choose Last Man Standing when you understand the cost of failure
Survival formats are a poor place to discover that your reload or view key is wrong. Audit your controls first, then use a low-stakes session to learn the pace before committing to a match where one mistake can remove you from play.
Choose Altis Life or Antistasi for longer cooperative or role-based play
Altis Life is associated with player-created role-play servers, so read each community’s rules before connecting. Antistasi is a persistent cooperative guerrilla-warfare mission; its longer progression makes communication and following the current objective more important than chasing a single engagement. Both require more attention to the server’s own instructions than a short deathmatch round.

Bohemia Interactive’s Field Manual describes Zeus as a system in which Game Masters curate scenarios with a three-dimensional real-time editor. Zeus is therefore not simply another team-deathmatch ruleset. It changes the player’s job: instead of only controlling a soldier through a mission, the Zeus player can shape what the mission presents.
Free form
In the Free form, the Zeus is a soldier on the battlefield who can open the Zeus interface. Because that character exists in the world, other players can kill the Zeus. You must balance editing or directing the scenario with ordinary battlefield survival.

Forced form
In the Forced form, the Zeus interface opens automatically and cannot be closed with its normal key. The Zeus is not represented as a character in the world. This makes the role a dedicated oversight position rather than a soldier who occasionally opens the editor.
Why Zeus can feel confusing
- The interface and the battlefield are connected, so a mission can change while you are observing it.
- Your responsibilities depend on whether the mission uses Free or Forced form.
- The controls you need as a Game Master differ from the controls you need as a soldier.
- A server briefing should tell you which form is active and what the Game Master is expected to do.
If you are new, join a Zeus mission as a regular soldier first when the server permits it. Observe how the Game Master communicates objectives, then try the role after you know the ordinary movement and interaction controls.
Community-made missions and changing mode names
Many popular Arma 3 experiences are player-created rather than fixed campaigns shipped with one universal ruleset. That is why two servers using the same broad mode name can have different equipment, respawn systems, objectives or etiquette. Read the mission description, server rules and briefing every time you connect.
A dated Bohemia developer update, SPOTREP #00058, said older Zeus labels such as ZDM, ZCTF and ZvP were replaced by a single Zeus mode. Because that update is historical, do not assume the old labels or the replacement naming are identical in every current server browser. If a listing looks unfamiliar, open its details and check the mission description rather than selecting by name alone.

Troubleshoot the most common beginner problems
“The key in a guide does nothing.”
Open Controls and inspect the active binding. The guide may describe another preset, an older patch or a custom profile. Check for a modifier, a duplicate assignment or a changed profile, then save and test the displayed key.
“The new key works, but the old key still does too.”
Arma 3 may retain the previous assignment. Return to the action, remove the old binding if the menu offers that option, assign the new key, save and reopen Controls to confirm that only the intended assignment remains.

“I cannot tell whether the mission or my controls are at fault.”
Leave the live server and test one action at a time in a low-risk mission. If the command works there, read the server briefing: the mission may restrict equipment, use a different interaction system or assign a role-specific task.
“The server’s mode name does not explain what to do.”
Open the mission description and briefing before spawning. Mode names are broad labels, especially for player-created content. Look for the objective, scoring, respawn, communication and role instructions. If those details are missing, choose a better-documented server.
“A familiar Zeus label is missing.”
Search for the current Zeus listing and read its details. The older ZDM, ZCTF and ZvP labels were reported as replaced by a single Zeus mode in SPOTREP #00058, but that naming change is dated and may not describe every current build or server browser.
Quick Recap
A practical first-session checklist
- Open the Controls menu and verify movement, stance, view, weapon selection, reload, interaction and communication.
- Resolve duplicate bindings, especially after applying a preset.
- Save the profile, reopen Controls and confirm the displayed keys.
- Join a server with a readable mission description and briefing.
- Identify the objective, scoring, respawn rules and communication channel before moving.
- Test one movement, view and weapon action in a safe moment.
- Ask the team which role or task is expected instead of guessing from the mode name.
- Leave and reconfigure in a low-risk session if a key fails; do not troubleshoot an unfamiliar layout during a high-consequence round.
