Shields count as armour but occupy the off-hand slot; clothing is a separate category that occupies the same body slot as armour. For the complete, item-by-item lists and acquisition details, see the community-maintained BG3 armour tables, shield list and clothing list.
What counts as armour in Baldur’s Gate 3?
For this guide, armour means the game’s light, medium and heavy categories, plus shields. Clothing is not armour, even though it uses the same body equipment slot. That distinction matters when checking a character’s equipment or looking for an item with armour-specific rules.
The live armour tables list individual pieces, their AC, Stealth effects, weight, price, special properties and acquisition information. They may include repeated entries where an item is available from more than one source, and the list can change as the reference is updated. Rather than give a potentially misleading total, use the linked tables for the current catalogue.
How the armour categories affect AC
| Category | Dexterity added to AC | Stealth | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Full Dexterity modifier | No category-wide disadvantage is stated | Often suits characters who benefit from a high Dexterity modifier. |
| Medium | Up to +2 | Some pieces impose disadvantage on Stealth checks | Compare the individual piece’s properties as well as its AC. |
| Heavy | No Dexterity modifier | Imposes disadvantage on Stealth checks | Offers the category’s maximum protection, but check proficiency before equipping it. |
These are category rules, not a ranking of specific items. A unique property can matter more to a character than a small difference in base AC.

Proficiency: check before equipping armour or a shield
Wearing armour without the relevant proficiency prevents spellcasting and imposes disadvantage on ability checks, saving throws and attack rolls. Proficiency can come from a class, race, feat or multiclassing. The armour reference notes that multiclassing into Barbarian grants shield proficiency only, and multiclassing does not grant heavy armour proficiency.
Shields have their own proficiency requirement. Using a shield without proficiency imposes disadvantage on ability checks, saving throws and attack rolls and prevents spellcasting. Check the character’s proficiencies before equipping either armour or a shield; some helmets, gloves and boots also require proficiency in an armour category.

Shields, clothing and other equipment
Shields
Shields are equipped in the off-hand and provide AC bonuses. They are part of the armour question, but do not belong in the light, medium or heavy body-armour categories. Browse the shield table for individual entries and locations.
Clothing
Clothing occupies the same body slot as armour but is listed separately and does not become armour by occupying that slot. If you want every wearable body item rather than armour in the game’s category sense, include the separate clothing catalogue in your search.

Helmets, gloves and boots
These are separate equipment pieces rather than body armour. Some have armour-proficiency requirements, so check an item’s properties and the character’s proficiencies instead of assuming that only chest pieces can trigger armour rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose armour for a character
- Start with proficiency. An item that causes the unproficient penalties can undermine its defensive benefit.
- Compare Dexterity and category. Light armour uses the full Dexterity modifier; medium armour caps it at +2; heavy armour adds none.
- Check Stealth. Heavy armour and some medium pieces impose disadvantage on Stealth checks.
- Read the item’s special effects. AC alone does not determine which piece works best for a build.
- Use acquisition details to find a specific piece. The item tables provide locations and may list multiple sources for the same item.
There is no single best armour for every character: the answer depends on proficiency, Dexterity, Stealth needs and the effects that support the build.
