They join as you advance the main story, and only two can travel with you at a time. Kai and Marius join in Dawnshore, Giatta in Emerald Stair, and Yatzli later in the story. The clearest point of uncertainty is Yatzli’s formal recruitment quest: published guides give different quest names, so the distinction between meeting her and officially recruiting her matters.
How to recruit every main companion in Avowed
The roster follows the story through Avowed’s regions. This table separates each companion’s first encounter from the point at which they join, where the available guide accounts make that distinction clear.

Recruitment and location details are reported in Gamer Guides’ guide, published February 12, 2025 and last updated March 11, 2025, and PC Gamer’s guide, updated February 13, 2025. Game8’s Yatzli quest name comes from its search-result text, so treat it as supporting rather than conclusive evidence.
What each companion brings to your party
Companions contribute in combat, but their exploration commands can also help reveal loot or open routes. Since you can bring only two outside camp, choose according to the obstacles and fights you expect rather than assuming one fixed pair is best.

These role and command descriptions are reported by Gamer Guides. Because some commands affect access to paths or loot, a companion’s value is not limited to damage or survivability.
How to change your active companions
You are not locked into the first pair you recruit. Gamer Guides reports that companions can be swapped at party camps. Use camps to adjust your two-person traveling group as the story, combat needs, or exploration obstacles change.

Companion quests and character stories
Kai: Battle Scars
Kai’s companion quest becomes available after An Untimely End. It takes him to Tama’s Cabin in Emerald Stair and to locations in Shatterscarp, according to Gamer Guides.
Marius: Chorus of the Lost
Gamer Guides says Marius’s quest automatically triggers when you enter the Lost Village in Galawain’s Tusks. The quest explores his past.

Giatta and Yatzli
Gamer Guides does not list separate companion quests for Giatta or Yatzli. That does not mean they lack character-specific story moments; their character material is described as threaded through the main story.
