To complete The Butterfly Collector in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, find ten paper butterflies on trees around Osaka, follow the three message clues into the child-rescue investigation, defeat Kacho, then return to the Gamemaker and choose whether to kill or spare him. The quest is available in Act 1 in Izumi Settsu; the butterfly trees may not appear as map markers, so use the landmarks below and look for blue observation dots.
Where to start The Butterfly Collector
The quest giver is the Gamemaker, encountered near Katano in Izumi Settsu after progressing through Act 1. VULKK places him west of Katano Castle beside an Ornament Vendor; treat that as an approximate landmark rather than an exact coordinate, since guides describe the starting area somewhat differently. VULKK’s walkthrough identifies the location and quest resolution.
The first objective is to collect ten origami butterflies on trees around Osaka, on the island southwest of Osaka Castle that includes Osaka Kakurega and Temple of Osaka. PowerPyx notes that the trees are not marked on the map even in Guided Mode. Use the surrounding landmarks and observe the area for blue dots to spot a collectible. All ten butterfly locations around Osaka
PC Gamer’s route describes each pickup by nearby landmarks rather than coordinates. Follow it as a general route, checking trees in the described spots; the guide includes map images alongside its directions. PC Gamer’s butterfly guide supplies these landmark descriptions.

- First: Look for a tree in reeds behind a fence along the river east of town, southeast of the kakurega.
- Second: Check the large tree in the grassy patch just north of Temple of Osaka.
- Third: Search behind the small fenced shrine west of Temple of Osaka. The spot is visible from near the second pickup.
- Fourth: Find the lone tree between houses beside the river southeast of Osaka, a short distance from the previous location.
- Fifth: Look at the tree beside a bamboo shelter, north of the gear merchant near the kakurega, northeast of Osaka by the river.
- Sixth: Head to the riverbank northeast of Osaka, beside the middle bridge. Cross the short bridge from the kakurega to reach it.
- Seventh: Check the tree in a garden behind a house east of Osaka. Go northeast across the bridge, then take the left street.
- Eighth: Search the riverside bush northwest of Osaka, beside a lamp; a bridge to another island is visible in the distance.
- Ninth: Look in the bush opposite the burned houses east of the central island, with Kojo Ruins across the water.
- Tenth: Check the bush-covered tree along the river at the southwest corner of the central island, near the Fishermen’s District camp.
The tenth location is also associated with One That Got Away. PC Gamer notes that speaking to the nearby child can move the investigation forward automatically instead of sending you straight back to the Gamemaker.
What the white butterflies unlock
Three of the ten butterflies are white and carry secret messages. They open the leads All Will Be Well, Find the Child, and One That Got Away, which begin the investigation into four kidnappers. The other butterflies are purple, green, yellow, red, blue, orange, pink, and one additional white; guides do not agree on a dependable numbering-to-color sequence, so use the message and objective updates rather than assuming a fixed color order. PowerPyx lists the colors and clue leads, while VULKK also confirms the three white clue butterflies.

How to complete the kidnappers investigation
The investigation names Richo, Mucho, Shucho, and Kacho. The order in which objectives appear can vary as clues are found and tasks are completed; follow the active objective if your sequence differs from the one below. PowerPyx’s objective list and VULKK’s Kacho directions describe the leads and targets.
Richo — All Will Be Well
Follow the well clue to the bamboo grove north of Osaka Castle near Noda Village. Richo is outside a cabin. After dealing with her, open the cabin, then follow the rescued girl home.

Mucho — Find the Child
Find Mucho with a boy at the marked location. She attempts to flee; deal with her, then speak to the boy and escort him home.
Shucho — One That Got Away
Find the child in a stable. Shucho appears northeast of the child’s location.

Kacho — Chrysalis
Investigate the hideout in the Fishermen’s District, then find Kacho near Nishinomaru Garden in the military district. Kacho is the kidnappers’ leader and the final target before you return to the Gamemaker.

After resolving Kacho’s lead, return to the Gamemaker. You can kill or spare him; VULKK says this choice does not affect gameplay. Published reward lists differ, and they describe different scopes:
