Hollow Knight: Silksong’s checked Crest roster contains seven names: Hunter, Wanderer, Reaper, Beast, Witch, Architect, and Shaman. A Crest changes Hornet’s attack pattern and controls which Tool slots you can equip, so the right choice depends on the encounter and your build rather than on a single universally best option.
The roster and route notes below come from secondary guides dated September 8, 2025, plus the Silksong Wiki overview last updated October 25, 2025. Team Cherry’s current patch notes were not available to confirm every route, slot layout, or upgrade rule, so treat location directions as reported leads and check the Crest menu in your game.
What a Crest changes
A Crest is equipment, not a Tool. Equipping one changes Hornet’s basic attacks and determines the Tool-slot layout available for that loadout. The Silksong Wiki groups Tools into four functional colors:
- Red: active Tools used directly during combat.
- Blue: passive effects.
- Yellow: utility Tools.
- White: Silk Skills.
Memory Lockets are reported to add slots to a Crest you already own. The consulted guides do not establish a reliable, current list of costs, maximum totals, or whether every upgrade can be reversed, so confirm those details at the in-game upgrade interface before spending resources.

How to choose a Crest for a job
Start with the attack pattern
Secondary guides describe Hunter as the balanced baseline, Wanderer as quicker with tighter strikes, and Reaper as slower or heavier with broader arcs. Those differences affect spacing, hit-and-run play, and how safely you can punish a boss after a missed attack. Test the full light-attack string and its reach in a safe area before committing to a route.
Match slot colors to the build
Count the colors you actually use rather than chasing the largest-looking layout. A combat kit may need Red slots for damage or crowd control, Blue slots for sustained passives, Yellow slots for traversal or utility, and White slots for Silk Skills. The guides report slot information for individual Crests but do not provide a patch-verified set of totals here; read the current in-game layout as authoritative.
Rank #2
- Hollow Knight: Silksong is the epic sequel to Hollow Knight, the award winning action-adventure.
- Journey to all-new lands, discover new powers, battle vast hordes of bugs and beasts and uncover secrets tied to your nature and your past.
Account for healing and Silk behavior
Guide comparisons mention altered healing or Silk generation for some Crests. Treat those effects as encounter-specific advantages: a Crest that supports frequent healing may be preferable for attrition, while one that supports faster Silk use can suit a build built around White-slot skills. Confirm the exact effect in the Crest description, because no current official specification was established for every name.
Spoiler warning: reported Crest locations

| Crest | Reported area or condition | What is safe to conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Hunter | Available at the start, according to GameSpot. | Use it as the opening reference point for comparing later attack patterns. |
| Wanderer | Wormways/Bonegrave route; the guides describe alternate route details. | Expect a progression route rather than an immediate early-game pickup. |
| Reaper | Greymoor. | Search Greymoor after reaching the area; confirm the local gate or encounter. |
| Beast | Hunter’s March. | The area is consistently named in the reported location summaries. |
| Architect | Underworks. | Check the Crest-related interaction or reward in Underworks rather than relying on a single online route. |
| Witch | Unlocked through a quest line. | The quest’s exact steps and prerequisites should be confirmed in-game; the consulted references do not establish one definitive sequence. |
| Shaman | Act 3. | Treat Act 3 as the progression gate reported by the guides, not as a guarantee for every patch or mode. |
The seven Crests, at a glance
Hunter
Hunter is the reported starting Crest and the most useful baseline for learning how Crest-specific attacks feel. Its balanced profile makes it a practical control build while you learn which Red, Blue, Yellow, and White Tools fit your route.
Wanderer
Guides characterize Wanderer with faster, tighter strikes. That favors players who stay close, weave attacks between short openings, and value quick repositioning over wide coverage. Its reported Wormways/Bonegrave route is progression-gated, so do not assume it is available immediately.
Rank #4
- Classic side-scrolling action, with all the modern trimmings.
- Forge your own path! The world of Hallownest is expansive and open. Choose which paths you take, which enemies you face and find your own way forward.
- Evolve with powerful new skills and abilities! Gain spells, strength and speed. Leap to new heights on ethereal wings. Dash forward in a blazing flash. Blast foes with fiery Soul!
- Equip Charms! Ancient relics that offer bizarre new powers and abilities. Choose your favorites and make your journey unique!
- An enormous cast of cute and creepy characters all brought to life with traditional 2D frame-by-frame animation.
Reaper
Reaper is described with heavier, broader arcs and is reported in Greymoor. The wider swing can help against clustered targets or bosses that expose a large hitbox, while its rhythm may demand more deliberate spacing than Wanderer.
Beast
Beast is reported in Hunter’s March. The consulted material confirms the name and area but does not provide a patch-verified moveset or slot total. Compare its attack preview and slot colors directly with Hunter before investing Memory Lockets.

Witch
Witch is tied to a quest line rather than a simple area pickup. Because the references do not agree on a fully documented sequence, follow the quest state shown by your current game and avoid abandoning NPC steps based on an old guide.
Architect
Architect is reported in Underworks. No independently verified current slot totals were established for this guide, so select it when its live layout and attack preview support your intended Tool combination rather than assuming its name implies a particular build.
Shaman
Shaman is reported as an Act 3 Crest. That makes it a later-progression option in the cited guides; inspect its Silk and Tool interactions in the Crest menu before rebuilding around it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison workflow
- Record the job: decide whether the next challenge needs reach, rapid single-target pressure, crowd control, healing endurance, Silk Skills, or utility.
- Preview the attack: compare startup, range, recovery, and the complete attack chain in a safe room.
- Audit the slots: map the Crest’s current colors to the Tools you actually own; do not infer totals from an older screenshot.
- Test one encounter: use the Crest for a short run and note whether its rhythm creates openings or forces unsafe trades.
- Upgrade after testing: spend Memory Lockets only after confirming the current cost and upgrade behavior in your version.
What is and is not confirmed
- The seven names above are the roster appearing across the checked guide references, not a developer-confirmed statement that no additional Crest exists in a later patch.
- Locations are dated reports from September 8, 2025; the Silksong Wiki overview was last updated October 25, 2025 and leaves some location fields unknown.
- No official Team Cherry page or current patch note was found confirming every moveset, slot total, Memory Locket cost, or unlock condition.
- Guide pages are not official documentation. Use them to narrow a search, then trust the current game’s Crest description, map state, and quest log.
Game context
GameSpot’s listing reports Hollow Knight: Silksong’s first release on September 4, 2025, with computer and console platforms and Team Cherry and Fangamer named as publishers. That listing is not a retailer page, so platform availability, physical editions, and stock should be checked separately.

Use Hunter as your baseline, then choose among Wanderer’s quicker tight strikes and Reaper’s heavier broad arcs according to the encounter. The other four Crests expand the roster through reported area or quest gates, but their exact current routes and slot details should be verified in-game before you commit upgrades.
