Astel, Naturalborn of the Void is reached through the Grand Cloister in the Lake of Rot. The fight rewards patience: react to its opening laser, track it when it teleports, and attack its head when an opening appears. Defeating it awards 80,000 runes and the Remembrance of the Naturalborn, and advances a route tied to Ranni’s quest.
Where to find Astel, Naturalborn of the Void
Follow the Lake of Rot route to the Grand Cloister. From the Grand Cloister Site of Grace, look for a coffin beside the waterfall to the west, in the southern part of the lake. Entering it transports you to the secluded area where Astel waits. The route and coffin location are described in the Gamer Guides boss guide.

This encounter is part of the route associated with Ranni the Witch’s quest. Defeating Astel is not the end of the quest: onward passage toward Moonlight Altar is gated by the Dark Moon Ring, as noted by Eldenpedia’s encounter page.
How to handle Astel’s attacks
Astel mixes ranged magic and teleportation with dangerous close-range attacks. Its opening laser can punish an unprepared approach, while grabs, pincers, and ground slams make standing directly in front of it risky. A meteor attack also appears during the fight. The strategies below reflect recommendations in the Push Square guide and Gamer Guides’ boss guide; they are not a guarantee that a particular build will make the fight easy.

Respond to the opening laser
Be ready to evade as the fight begins rather than running straight toward Astel. Once the laser passes, close the gap if you are using melee, or use the opening to attack from range while staying alert for its next spell.
Keep Astel in view after it teleports
When Astel disappears, turn to reacquire it before committing to an attack or healing. Its position can change the threat: it may resume ranged pressure or appear close enough to threaten you with a grab. Avoid assuming that one fixed distance is safe throughout the fight.

Target the head when you have an opening
Astel’s body is armored, so guides recommend aiming for its head. Melee players should keep moving and avoid lingering directly in front, where a grab can punish an extended attack. Ranged players still need to manage distance carefully because Astel can pressure them with long-range attacks.
Create space when it prepares a slam
Watch for Astel raising its arms as a cue to prepare for a ground slam, then move away if you can. A shield may help if you cannot escape the attack, but creating space is the broader recommendation. Treat the meteor spell as another cue to prioritize evasion over attacking until the immediate danger passes.

The Naturalborn encounter awards 80,000 runes according to the Gamer Guides page, whose guide is dated 2022 and was updated on May 18, 2026. It also awards the Remembrance of the Naturalborn. Enia can exchange that Remembrance for either Bastard’s Stars or Ash of War: Waves of Darkness; choosing one means using the Remembrance for that reward.

Astel, Naturalborn of the Void is the Lake of Rot/Ainsel River encounter described above. Astel, Stars of Darkness is a different boss in Yelough Anix Tunnel in the Consecrated Snowfield; its reward is Meteorite of Astel, not the Remembrance of the Naturalborn.
