The standard finesse weapon categories in Baldur’s Gate 3 are daggers, shortswords, scimitars, and rapiers. Four named exceptions break that pattern: Larethian’s Wrath and Phalar Aluve are longswords, The Dancing Breeze is a glaive, and the Practice Sword is a shortsword with bludgeoning damage. In ordinary use, Finesse lets a character use the higher of their Strength or Dexterity modifiers for attack and damage rolls.
What does Finesse do?
Finesse is a weapon property. For ordinary attacks, a character uses whichever modifier is higher: Strength or Dexterity. The property is also relevant to rogues: the bg3.wiki Finesse reference says a rogue can use Sneak Attack only with a weapon that has Finesse.

These are the category-level baseline damage dice and properties listed in the bg3.wiki weapons overview. Individual named weapons may have enchantments or other effects in addition to their category baseline.

These are baseline weapon-category values, not a full comparison of every magical or unique item. In particular, Light and Thrown are separate properties from Finesse; a weapon having one does not imply it has the others.

Named exceptions to the usual categories
The bg3.wiki Finesse reference names these unusual finesse weapons:
- Larethian’s Wrath: a +1 longsword with Finesse.
- Phalar Aluve: a +1 longsword with Finesse.
- The Dancing Breeze: a +2 glaive with Finesse.
- Practice Sword: a shortsword with Finesse; it is identified by the reference as the only finesse weapon that deals bludgeoning damage.

Is Phalar Aluve a finesse weapon?
Yes. Phalar Aluve is a longsword with Finesse, as is Larethian’s Wrath. They are exceptions to the usual category pattern, not evidence that all longswords have Finesse.
Do thrown finesse weapons use Strength or Dexterity?
The cited references do not agree on thrown finesse attacks. The Finesse page says thrown weapons with Finesse use Strength for attack rolls even when Dexterity is higher. The Weapons overview describes a thrown dagger as using Dexterity for attack and damage, while the Attack roll page says a finesse weapon used as a thrown ranged attack uses Strength for the attack roll and the higher Strength or Dexterity modifier for damage. Because these descriptions conflict, the thrown-attack rule is not established here as a single dependable rule. Check the current game behavior if it affects a build or combat decision.
