Genshin Impact food falls into three useful catalogue groups: ordinary dishes, character-specific Special Dishes, and event-exclusive dishes. Recipes are separate inventory items that teach many dishes; a few dishes can be cooked without a recipe item. There is no single verified current total: community catalogues report different counts, so treat their figures as source-specific rather than definitive.

What counts as food in Genshin Impact?

A dish is the usable food item; a recipe is an item that teaches you how to cook a dish. Most dishes have an associated recipe, but the two are not the same collection record. The community-maintained Food/List groups its catalogue into non-special food, Special Dishes, and Event-Exclusive Dishes.

Some dishes are available to cook from the start without an associated recipe item: Chicken-Mushroom Skewer, Fisherman’s Toast, Fried Radish Balls, and Mondstadt Grilled Fish. For other dishes, acquiring the recipe is part of unlocking the ability to cook them.

How many food items are there?

Published counts conflict, and no single official all-food index establishes a universal total. The Genshin Impact Wiki (Fandom) list displayed 290 non-special foods, 114 Special Dishes, and 43 Event-Exclusive Dishes when returned in a search on October 7, 2026. HoYoDex’s list, labeled updated January 17, 2026, reported 313 foods that are not Special Dishes. The figures use different categories and may reflect different update timing or inclusion rules; they should not be added together or treated as a verified current count. See HoYoDex’s food list.

How to choose food for an activity

Choose by the effect you need, not just the dish’s star rank. Food effects are organized by type, and dishes in the same type do not stack. The Food/List reference also says no more than four types of food buffs can be active at once. That means a useful loadout combines different effect categories rather than using several dishes that compete for the same buff slot.

  • Preparing for a fight: choose dishes for the combat effect you need, such as an offensive or defensive boost, and avoid spending another slot on a dish of the same type.
  • Exploration and travel: prioritize stamina-related effects when they suit the activity. HoYoWiki’s entry for A Buoyant Breeze, for example, describes a stamina-consumption effect and lists its associated recipe.
  • Restoring a character: check the dish’s specific recovery effect before using it; food is not interchangeable merely because dishes share a star rating.

Effect details can vary from dish to dish. For individual descriptions and recipe associations, consult the relevant HoYoWiki entry, such as A Buoyant Breeze or Universal Peace.

Special Dishes and event-exclusive food

Special Dishes

Special Dishes are character-specific versions of dishes. They are a distinct group in food catalogues, not an additional recipe category to add indiscriminately to every published total. When checking a dish, look for whether a particular character can produce a Special Dish version; this is separate from whether the ordinary dish has a recipe item.

Event-exclusive dishes

Event-Exclusive Dishes are listed separately because their availability is tied to events rather than the ordinary recipe catalogue. Their inclusion can affect a catalogue’s total, so check whether a list includes event food before comparing its count with another source.

Where to find a complete dish and recipe list

For breadth, use the community-maintained Food/List catalogue, which separates ordinary food, Special Dishes, and event-exclusive dishes. For a specific dish’s description or recipe association, use its individual HoYoWiki entry where available. Treat counts as snapshots rather than proof that every item is currently obtainable.
