It also offers separate game-specific tools for five game entries, including Zelda Notes for two Nintendo Switch 2 editions. These are different kinds of app support, and Nintendo’s named voice-chat list is not stated to be exhaustive.
Games that support voice chat through the app
Nintendo describes these as “many popular games,” not as a complete list. The app’s voice-chat feature also works with the entire Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online game library; Nintendo’s statement does not extend to other classic-game libraries.

What you need to use app voice chat
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account holder aged 13 or older.
- The Nintendo Switch Online app signed in with the same Nintendo Account used on the console.
- A compatible game and a multiplayer mode that supports voice chat.
Start the compatible game and enter a supported multiplayer mode, then join its voice-chat lobby in the app. Other app users join as they enter that online game; the app chat is not an always-on standalone room. Follow Nintendo’s voice-chat setup instructions.
Switch 2 compatibility and GameChat
Nintendo says app voice chat works with compatible software played on either Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive games do not support voice chat through the Nintendo Switch app. Switch 2 GameChat is a separate feature, not another name for app voice chat; see Nintendo’s app FAQ for its distinctions.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Headphones and Bluetooth headsets
You can use headphones or a headset connected to your smart device for app voice chat. For a wireless Bluetooth headset, Nintendo advises support for the HSP or HFP profile. A headset is optional; it is not a prerequisite for using the app. See Nintendo’s headset guidance.
Is the app required to play online?
No. Nintendo describes the app as an additional service for features such as voice chat and invitations, not a requirement for playing Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 games online. Membership and feature requirements can differ by service; Nintendo’s membership-services page outlines which features require a membership.
