Overwatch 2 Perks are hero-specific upgrades selected during a match, but there is no dependable, fixed “all heroes” list: Blizzard has moved some perks into heroes’ base kits, added new ones and continued tuning individual choices. The rules below explain how the system works and how to judge a choice; check the live in-game Perks screen for the options and effects on your current patch.
What are Perks in Overwatch 2?
Perks are upgrades a player earns for the hero they are playing during a match. They change some part of that hero’s kit, such as an ability, passive, cooldown, resource, movement or survivability. Their purpose is to let players adapt and make strategic choices as a match develops.

Blizzard introduced Perks for Quick Play and Competitive in February 2025. At launch, the system offered two selections during a match: a Minor Perk, described as a lighter upgrade, followed later by a Major Perk, which Blizzard said could change a hero’s capabilities more substantially. That is the launch-era description, not a guarantee that every hero’s present-day options or classification are unchanged.

In Blizzard’s February 18, 2025 launch rules, dealing damage, securing eliminations and healing allies all contributed to Perk progress. Progress gradually accelerated during a match, and eliminating an enemy with a higher Perk level granted extra progress. Players could choose a Perk through the selection interface or use custom bindings.

The exact progress requirements and available choices can change with updates. Use the in-game interface to see what your hero can select in the current match rather than treating the launch rules as a current, complete specification.
What happens to Perk progress when you switch heroes?
Under Blizzard’s February 2025 rules, switching reset progress for the newly selected hero: it started at level 1 with no Perk progress. Progress on heroes you had already played was preserved for that round. In other words, changing heroes did not transfer one hero’s progress to another, but returning to a previously played hero retained that hero’s progress under those launch rules.

What is the difference between Minor and Major Perks?
At launch, Minor Perks were the earlier, lighter upgrade choice; Major Perks came later and were intended to have a more noticeable effect on how a hero could play. That distinction describes the original system’s design, not a universal ranking of which choice is stronger. A perk’s value depends on the hero, the other option, the situation and the current version of the game.
How to evaluate a Perk choice
Read the current in-game description, then consider what the upgrade changes and what you give up by choosing it over the alternative. A perk can be useful because it makes an ability available more often, changes when or how you can engage, or adds team utility—but those are strategic interpretations, not guarantees of better results.

- Identify the affected part of the kit. Check whether the perk modifies an ability, passive, resource, cooldown, movement option or defensive tool.
- Connect the effect to your plan. Ask whether it supports how you intend to approach fights, protect teammates or use your hero’s abilities.
- Account for the alternative. A situational benefit may be less useful than the other perk if the matchup or team needs differ.
- Reassess as the match changes. Opponents, team composition and your own hero choice can affect which kind of upgrade is useful; no perk name alone establishes that it is always best.
Why an “all hero Perks” list can go out of date
Perks are a live-service system, and Blizzard’s updates have changed both what counts as a perk and which options are available. A list from the February 2025 launch is historical, not a reliable present-day inventory. It included 168 Perks across the 41 heroes in that launch-era roster; those figures should not be read as the current roster size or the current total number of Perks.
Blizzard’s April 14, 2026 Season 2 notes document examples of perks being moved into heroes’ normal kits, alongside new perks, tuning and cost adjustments. Ramattra’s Vengeful Vortex moved from a Major Perk to a baseline ability; Prolonged Barrier was added as a Minor option, and Void Surge moved to Major. Roadhog’s Invigorate Major Perk was removed, and Hogdrogen Exposure was added. These are dated examples of changes, not a statement of either hero’s current options.

Blizzard later announced that Season 18 would bring over 50 new hero-specific Perks and at least one fresh Perk for every hero. That announcement describes the scale of that refresh, not the current total number of Perks. September 8, 2026 live notes then showed further tuning, including changes to D.Mon’s Focused Fusion Major Perk, Wrecking Ball’s Adaptive Barrier Major Perk, Freja’s Relentless Barrage Minor Perk, Junkrat’s Nitro Boost Minor Perk and Torbjörn’s Anchor Bolts Major Perk. The cited notes establish that these options were changed; they do not by themselves establish their present effects.

Open the Perks selection interface during a match and read the available choices for the hero you are playing. For a roster-wide reference, use Blizzard’s patch notes for the live version you are playing, since individual effects, categories and costs can change. The launch-era list and dated examples above explain how the system has evolved, but they are not a current, exhaustive catalog of every hero’s Minor and Major Perks.
