The original Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has the highest dated sales total located: Guinness World Records published two figures for it, 12.99 million in 2014 and 13.06 million as of April 2015. The 2009 Olympic Winter Games is next at 7.72 million as of July 2013. London 2012 ranks third among the games with usable title-level figures, but its reported totals cover different platforms and regions. No comparable worldwide lifetime totals establish a sales order for Sochi 2014, Rio 2016, or Tokyo 2020.
How the ranking works
This ranking covers the six core console entries: the 2007 Beijing-themed game, the 2009 Winter Games, London 2012, Sochi 2014, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020. It ranks only titles with usable title-level sales disclosures. The figures below have different dates and scopes, so they are reported evidence—not a like-for-like lifetime-sales league table. A milestone, a regional/platform result, or an aggregate franchise row cannot be substituted for a comparable worldwide total.

Tokyo 2020 means the Mario & Sonic console game, not SEGA’s other Olympic products. SEGA distinguished that title from the separate official Tokyo 2020 game, arcade game, and mobile game in its Tokyo 2020 announcement. SEGA’s Olympic-games announcement identifies the series’ event sequence through Rio 2016.

| Rank | Game | Published figure | Scope and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (2007) | 12.99 million; a separate Guinness page reports 13.06 million | Guinness record entry dated October 2014; the second figure is stated as of 13 April 2015. |
| 2 | Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (2009) | 7.72 million | Guinness figure as of 10 July 2013. |
| 3 | Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games | 2.39 million; a secondary report gives 3.28 million | SEGA Sammy’s 2.39 million is Europe/US Wii sales in FY-ending-March-2012 results. GameSpot’s 3.28 million report covers Wii and 3DS through 31 March 2012. |
1. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (2007)
The first game leads on the dated totals located. Guinness World Records’ best-selling sports videogame crossover entry gives 12.99 million, with the record dated October 2014. A separate Guinness best-selling Sonic videogame entry says 13.06 million global sales as of 13 April 2015. Those are two distinct dated claims; the available figures do not explain the difference, so they should not be merged into one supposedly definitive total.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo 2019
The game launched for Wii and Nintendo DS, as noted in the original-game launch announcement. Guinness’s headline totals are not broken out by platform in the cited record pages.
2. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (2009)
Guinness World Records lists 7,720,000 copies as of 10 July 2013 in its best-selling winter sports videogame record. Earlier announcements are useful context but are not interchangeable with that later dated total: SEGA announced a worldwide milestone of more than six million for Wii and DS in February 2010, in a statement reproduced by Nintendo World Report. Nintendo later said more than eight million people in Europe and North America had bought the Wii and DS game as of October 2011 in its Iwata Asks interview. That regional, platform-specific milestone has a different scope from the worldwide Guinness figure.
3. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games
London has two commonly cited figures, neither of which should be presented as a settled worldwide lifetime total. SEGA Sammy’s FY-ending-March-2012 sales results report 2.39 million units for the Wii version in Europe and the US. GameSpot’s 2012 report, attributing its information to SEGA Sammy results, gives 3.28 million for Wii and 3DS through 31 March 2012. The second figure is secondary reporting and has a broader platform scope; it is not directly comparable to the company’s Europe/US Wii figure.

Nintendo UK said more than 19 million people worldwide had bought games in the Mario & Sonic series before London’s launch, in its 2011 announcement. That is a rounded franchise-wide threshold, not a London sales total.

Games without a comparable public total
- Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games: no comparable title-specific worldwide lifetime total is established by the cited public material.
- Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games: no comparable title-specific worldwide lifetime total is established by the cited public material.
- Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: no comparable title-specific worldwide lifetime total is established by the cited public material. Nintendo’s investor title list identifies the game and its publisher in Japan and Europe, while a SEGA Sammy FY2021/3 investor presentation includes Tokyo 2020 among several major Sonic titles in an aggregate full-game sales row of approximately 4,400K units. Because that row also names other games, it cannot be assigned to Tokyo 2020 alone.
Without title-specific totals on a common basis, those three games cannot responsibly be ordered by sales. Their release order is known; their sales order is not established by these figures.

The best-supported result is that the 2007 original is the series’ sales leader among the figures located, followed by the 2009 Winter Games and then London 2012 among entries with usable title-level reports. The exact totals remain qualified by their source and cutoff date. The Guinness figures for the first two games are dated record claims; the London data mix a company-reported regional Wii figure with a secondary report of Wii and 3DS sales. None supplies a uniform, audited lifetime comparison across all six games.
