Stardew Valley 1.6 is a broad content update: it adds festivals, a new farm layout, mastery progression, crops, machines, pets, quests, visual changes, multiplayer improvements, balance adjustments, and quality-of-life fixes. ConcernedApe announced the PC release on March 19, 2024; the original announcement said console and mobile versions would follow when ready, so that historical statement alone does not confirm current availability or feature parity on those platforms.
Spoiler note: ConcernedApe warned that the official changelog contains spoilers. The sections below describe late-game progression and quest content as well as general features.
What did the Stardew Valley 1.6 update add?
The original 1.6 changelog describes a mixture of new activities, systems, items, and adjustments—not simply a balance patch. The feature overview below highlights major additions; it is not an exhaustive list of every dialogue, furniture, cosmetic, or secret change in the official 1.6 changelog.
New festivals and events
- Desert Festival: a three-day spring event.
- Trout Derby: a new fishing event.
- SquidFest: another new fishing event.
- Summer environmental event: a new seasonal event in summer.
Mastery and progression
Mastery adds a new progression system reached through a new area. It rewards powerful perks and items. The later 1.6.6 notes clarify that the 50% mastery XP bonus applies only to farming, as originally intended; it is not a universal bonus to all skills. See the official 1.6.6 patch notes.

Story, town life, and exploration

- A Ginger Island map, a side tunnel in the quarry mine, pan upgrades and enchantments, a new Goby fish, and additional secrets and achievements.
Crops, machines, and items
Four new crops are carrots, summer squash, broccoli, and powdermelon. The update also adds two giant crops and a range of machines, tools, consumables, and decorative items. Examples of machines include the Big Chest, Dehydrator, Mushroom Log, Bait Maker, Heavy Furnace, Fish Smoker, Anvil, and Mini-Forge. The Dehydrator processes fruit and mushrooms; the Fish Smoker doubles the value of smoked fish. Other additions include Statues of Blessings and the Dwarf King, tent kits, Treasure Totems, new baits and books, and trinkets.
Pets, animals, and farm management
After reaching max hearts with the starter pet, players can have multiple pets. Pets that love the player may bring gifts. The update adds two more cat and dog breeds, turtle pets, and the ability to put hats on cats and dogs. Farm-animal and pet management also receive changes, and NPCs get winter outfits.

What is the Meadowlands Farm?
Meadowlands is a new farm type designed with animals in mind. It starts with a coop and two chickens, and its blue grass is especially loved by animals. That gives the layout a distinct start compared with a farm that begins without a coop and chickens.
What changed visually?
The update redraws the world map and adds seasonal map variants, waterfalls, seasonal boat textures, more winter decorations, lighting changes, and assorted sprite and environmental updates. The world map can also show the player’s real-time position, including other players in multiplayer.

What changed in multiplayer?
On PC, the 1.6 changelog raises the multiplayer limit to up to eight players and lists performance, stability, authentication, packet-compression, and synchronization improvements. It also says joining players must use the same version and build number. Matching those numbers is a stated requirement, not a guarantee that every connection problem will be resolved.

Balance adjustments
ConcernedApe’s changelog revises prices, recipes, item drops, combat, mines, bundles, spouse friendship, crops, and farm systems. Specific examples include winter grass surviving without spreading during winter, changed skill requirements for recipes, a reduced prismatic-shard drop chance from iridium nodes, more protective unconsciousness penalties for tools and certain weapons, and revised mushroom-cave output frequency.

Quality-of-life improvements
- Performance improvements and changes to sounds and menus.
- NPCs move chests instead of destroying them.
- Tools can strafe while charging, with improved UI feedback.
- Building durations are communicated more clearly.
Are all these features in every 1.6 patch?
No. The initial 1.6 release and later 1.6.x patches are not interchangeable. For example, the 1.6.9 changelog adds legendary fish ponds, the ability to place beds and sleep in eligible constructed buildings, paid recovery of certain lost items, and a brief chance to recover objects dropped in water. Those are later 1.6.x features, not additions to attribute to the original 1.6 launch. Consult the official 1.6.9 changelog for those changes.
Is Stardew Valley 1.6 available on console and mobile?
ConcernedApe’s March 19, 2024 announcement confirmed that 1.6 was out on PC and said console and mobile updates would follow when ready. That announcement is a dated rollout statement, not a current platform-by-platform availability or parity list. Check the version and build shown for your own platform, and consult its current official update information before assuming a specific feature is present.
