To break Paint Spikes in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, first find four Lost Gestrals, return to Camp, and speak with Sastro to unlock Paint Break. Then use Strike on a spike. The checklist below follows locations named in two secondary guides, but it is not a verified exhaustive list: one guide says its timestamps cover most spikes, and the available text does not name every additional location.
Unlock Paint Break before hunting for spikes
- Find four Lost Gestrals.
- Return to Camp and speak to Sastro to obtain Paint Break.
- At a Paint Spike, use Strike. The reported default controls are Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox, and F on PC; remapped controls or platform-specific differences may apply.
RelicTrek says Paint Break resets when starting New Game+, so you must find four Lost Gestrals again during that playthrough. RelicTrek’s Paint Spikes guide describes the obstacles as blue-veined rocks that block routes or conceal rewards. They are distinct from Paint Cages, although a spike at Flying Manor can also be used as a target to open a nearby cage.

Paint Spike locations and reported rewards
The following locations and rewards are reported by RelicTrek and the timestamp headings in Seeking Tech’s video guide. Rewards are guide-reported, not independently verified here. These sources do not supply reliable turn-by-turn directions for every spike, so use the named area as a search cue rather than assuming a precise route.
| Area | Named location | Reported route or reward |
|---|---|---|
| Camp | Near Sastro | One Colour of Lumina. |
| The Continent | Near Isle of Eyes | Reward not stated in the available guide text. |
| The Continent | Near Sinister Cave | Reward not stated in the available guide text. |
| The Continent | Near Stone Wave Cliffs Cave | Reward not stated in the available guide text. |
| The Continent | Near Gestral Village | Reward not stated in the available guide text. |
| The Continent | Near The Small Bourgeon | Reward not stated in the available guide text. |
| The Continent | Near Monoco’s Station | Reward not stated in the available guide text. |
| Spring Meadows | Abandoned Expedition Camp, spike 1 | Hidden route to a Colour of Lumina and Aegis Revival Picto. |
| Spring Meadows | Abandoned Expedition Camp, spike 2 | Three Colours of Lumina. |
| Flying Waters | Lumieran Streets | One Colour of Lumina. |
| Ancient Sanctuary | Sanctuary Maze | Route to a Resplendent Chroma Catalyst, Piercing Shot Picto, and Colour of Lumina. |
| Gestral Village | Entrance | Powerful Shots Picto. |
| Gestral Village | Gestral Arena | Lune’s Betelim weapon. |
| Stone Wave Cliffs | Old Farm | Rejuvenating Revive Picto and a Chromatic Gault encounter; the guide lists Tainted, two Resplendent Chroma Catalysts, and five Colours of Lumina among the rewards. |
| Forgotten Battlefield | Fort Ruins | Polished Chroma Catalyst, guarded by a Troubadour enemy. |
| Sirene | Dancing Classes, spike 1 | Resplendent Chroma Catalyst. |
| Sirene | Dancing Classes, spike 2 | Colour of Lumina. |
| The Monolith | Tainted Sanctuary | Opens a route into Tainted Sanctuary. |
| The Reacher | Entrance | Rope route to a Colour of Lumina. |
| Lumiere, Act III | Harbour | 4,900 Chroma. |
| Lumiere, Act III | Lumiere’s Garden | 4,900 Chroma. |
| Flying Manor | Location not specified | One spike is also a target for a nearby Paint Cage associated with Energising Stun Picto; a separate spike reward is not stated. |
| Renoir’s Drafts (DLC) | Location not specified | Route to the Chromatic Creation boss; the guide lists a Perfect Chroma Catalyst, two Grandiose Chroma Catalysts, and five Colours of Lumina. |
Seeking Tech’s timestamp list names the Continent approaches and regional spikes above, but its text says the video covers “most” spikes and points to additional material without transcribing those locations. RelicTrek also describes spikes across at least 13 named locations without establishing a definitive count. Treat this as a useful checklist, not proof that every Paint Spike is accounted for.

What Paint Spikes can uncover
Paint Spikes can open hidden paths, expose chests or other rewards, and sometimes lead to optional boss encounters. The reported rewards range from Colours of Lumina and Pictos to weapons, Chroma, and Chroma Catalysts. That variety makes it worth checking a spike even when a guide does not specify its reward; do not confuse the obstacle with a Paint Cage or a currency used to upgrade Pictos.

The Seeking Tech guide spells one Act III location “Habour”; this checklist uses the standard spelling “Harbour.” RelicTrek calls the DLC area “Renoir’s Drafts,” while the Seeking Tech location list uses “Renoir’s Draft.” Follow the name shown in your game if it differs. The guide text does not establish exact spike counts, map markers, or precise directions for the Continent, Flying Manor, or Renoir’s Drafts.
