Black Myth: Wukong has three staff stances: Smash, Pillar, and Thrust. None is best in every fight. Smash supports mobile close pressure, Pillar can lift you above some ground attacks, and Thrust helps punish enemies at range or after they retreat. Choose for the opening you can safely reach, then change your Sparks if another stance fits the encounter better.
How the three stances differ
| Stance | Best suited to | How it plays |
|---|---|---|
| Smash | Close openings when you need to stay mobile | You can charge Heavy Attack while moving. Its counter path includes Resolute Strike and the follow-up Skyfall Strike. |
| Pillar | Some attacks that make ground-level positioning unsafe | Holding Heavy Attack raises the Destined One onto the staff. The height increases with Focus, and being perched can avoid ground attacks. |
| Thrust | Distant or retreating enemies with a clear approach lane | It charges while stationary and releases a swift thrust toward a distant target. Tactical Retreat can create space before a Forceful Thrust follow-up. |
For an encounter-specific choice, weigh four things: the distance at which the enemy gives you an opening, how long its punish window lasts, whether ground-level pressure makes staying close dangerous, and whether your target will remain aligned with a straight thrust. A 2025 matchup guide notes that Pillar can leave you vulnerable after committing, while Thrust may miss against erratic targets or in cramped spaces: TheGamer’s stance matchup guide.

Smash Stance skills
Smash is available from the start. It is a natural baseline for close-range pressure because you can charge while moving. Its counter sequence rewards timing: Resolute Strike can see through and nullify an incoming attack, and a successful hit can lead into Skyfall Strike. The names and effects below follow the reported skill descriptions; confirm prerequisites and wording in your current in-game tree.
- Force Unbound: Lets you sprint while charging.
- Ironbound Resolve: Increases damage reduction during a charged Heavy Attack.
- Smashing Force: Increases damage from a charged Smash Heavy Attack.
- Peace from Peril: Preserves built-up Focus if you Perfect Dodge while charging.
- Resolute Counterflow: Spending Focus on a Heavy Attack during a Light Attack combo triggers Resolute Strike, which can see through and nullify an incoming attack.
- Winding Wind: After seeing through an enemy, a Light Attack resumes the combo from its third move.
- Skyfall Strike: After Resolute Strike hits, another Focus-spending Heavy Attack performs a follow-up strike.
- Invigoration: Grants Focus after seeing through an enemy and hitting with Resolute Strike.
- Vantage Point: Increases Skyfall Strike damage according to built Focus after seeing through the enemy.
Epic Games Store’s 2024 guide recommends Force Unbound, Resolute Counterflow, Winding Wind, and Skyfall Strike among its Smash picks. That is a guide’s suggested selection, not a universal ranking: Epic Games Store’s skills guide.

Pillar Stance skills
Pillar is unlocked with Sparks; an updated guide places the unlock at level 5. Holding Heavy Attack supports the Destined One on the staff, with the perch rising as Focus increases. This vertical position can help against ground attacks, but it does not make every committed attack safe.
- Pillar Stance: The core stance mechanic, supporting the character on the staff.
- Sweeping Gale: A named varied-combo move; Epic’s guide recommends taking it with Pillar.
- Skylarking: Lets you use the gourd while perched with more than three Focus Points.
- Churning Gale: After a successful Sweeping Gale, a Focus-spending Heavy Attack triggers rapid whirling strikes.
- Towering Mountain: If stamina runs out while perched, triggers a Heavy Attack instead of a fall.
- Collapsing Gale: Makes Churning Gale use all Focus and adds damage based on the Focus consumed.
The available skill descriptions do not establish a complete, verified cost-and-prerequisite table for every Pillar node. Check the current in-game tree for those details rather than assuming nodes have a particular cost or order.

Thrust Stance skills
Thrust unlocks at level 20. It charges while stationary and releases a swift attack toward a distant enemy, making it useful when a target retreats or leaves a straight lane open. Its Tactical Retreat sequence gives you a way to create distance before countering.
- Thrust Stance: Unlocks the stance and its charged thrust.
- Borrowed Strength: Increases stamina recovery when you hit enemies in Thrust Stance.
- Offense in Defense: A Light Attack followed by Heavy Attack performs Tactical Retreat; another Focus-spending Heavy Attack can follow with Forceful Thrust.
- Whirling Thrusts: Holding Light Attack after Tactical Retreat, Forceful Thrust, or a charged Heavy Attack unleashes a thrust sequence.
- Lucky Strike: After Tactical Retreat against an enemy you have seen through, another Heavy Attack initiates Forceful Thrust and grants brief invincibility.
Epic’s guide characterizes Thrust as defense- and counter-oriented and recommends activating its available options as you level. Treat that as progression advice, not proof of an optimal build.

Unlocks, Sparks, and changing your build
Smash is available from the beginning; Thrust unlocks at level 20. Pillar requires Sparks, with an updated guide listing level 5 for its unlock. These level references come from guides, so use the current game interface to confirm availability in your version.
Epic’s guide says Sparks come from leveling and first-time interaction with Meditation Spots. In Self-Advance, it says you can refund an individual node or all allocated points, allowing you to adjust your build instead of treating early spending as permanent.

A community-maintained stance reference reports that the second Focus Point costs three Sparks, the third costs 10, and the fourth costs 20; it also says the fourth Focus gauge drains over time. Because those thresholds come from a community wiki mirror rather than a confirmed current in-game display, check the Focus tree before planning around them: Black Myth: Wukong Wiki’s Focus reference.

A practical approach is to invest first in a stance you can use reliably, then build another when it addresses a specific problem—such as ground pressure or a retreating target. Node costs, prerequisites, localized names, and behavior can vary with the current skill tree or game updates; the cited guides do not provide a fully verified cost-by-cost reference for every node.
