The multiplayer guidance lists 10 GB for two to five players, 12–14 GB for five to 15, and at least 16 GB for groups larger than 15. Those are planning bands, not performance guarantees; chunk generation, automation, view distance, simulation distance, and simultaneous exploration can raise the requirement.

What an ATM10 server is running
ATM10 is a large NeoForge modpack in the Minecraft 1.21.1 ecosystem. The official project listing describes the pack as Minecraft 1.21 with NeoForge, while the project repository identifies the 1.21.1 line. Treat the exact ATM10 release as the compatibility anchor: the server pack, client pack, and loader must all belong to that release.
A client on a different pack build can fail to connect even when both installations are called ATM10. Before downloading anything, write down the exact release number you intend to run. Download the server files for that release and give every player the matching client version. Do not update the client or server independently.

Install the matching server pack
1. Prepare a dedicated directory
Use a folder dedicated to this server rather than placing the files in a general downloads directory. A dedicated location makes backups, upgrades, permissions, and log review easier. Keep a copy of the complete folder before changing the pack version.
2. Extract the official server files
Download the server files listed for the chosen ATM10 release and extract them into the dedicated folder. The supplied package contains the launcher scripts and the files they generate on first start; do not substitute files from another ATM10 release.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Start it once with the supplied launcher
- On Windows, run
startserver.bat. - On Linux, run
startserver.shfrom the server directory. Ensure the script has permission to execute. - Allow the first run to create the EULA and configuration files, then stop the process cleanly.
- Open
eula.txt, change the value toeula=true, save it, and start the same launcher again.
Back up the server directory before updates. A backup should include the world, configuration files, scripts, and any locally added permissions or data. If an update goes wrong, restoring the folder is safer than trying to reconstruct settings from memory.
Use Java 21, not the operating system default
Current ATM10 multiplayer guidance specifies Java 21. A computer can have several Java installations, and the version returned by a system-wide command is not necessarily the one the launcher uses. Verify the executable selected by the start script.
If more than one Java version is installed, point the launcher’s Java path at the Java 21 executable, or set the environment variable named by the supplied start script. Make the change in the launcher’s supported setting rather than rewriting the launcher itself. After changing it, start the server and check the startup output to confirm that Java 21 is the runtime in use.
- A Java-version error at startup usually means the script found an older runtime or a path that no longer exists.
- If the server starts with one Java installation but not another, keep the working Java 21 path explicit instead of relying on the host’s default.
- When moving the server to a new machine, repeat the executable check; copying the server folder does not copy Java.
How much RAM and hardware ATM10 needs
The published multiplayer table gives these planning targets. They describe the Java heap allocation to plan for the group, not a promise that every world will perform identically.

| Concurrent players | Java version | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|---|

| 5–15 | Java 21 | 12–14 GB |
| 15 or more | Java 21 | 16 GB or more |
Leave memory for the operating system, file cache, Java overhead, and any other services on the machine. Assigning every available gigabyte to the JVM can make the host less stable rather than faster. The figures are most useful as a starting point: a lightly used five-player world may behave differently from five people generating new terrain while large automation systems run.
Storage and processor capacity
Use NVMe storage when possible. ATM10 creates and reads many world and mod files, and faster storage helps with startup, saves, and chunk work. Increase CPU capacity as the player count rises. Simultaneous exploration, heavy automation, high view distance, and high simulation distance all add work even when the player count is unchanged.
Plan for the workload, not only the roster
Count the players who may be online together, then consider what they do. New terrain generation is more demanding than remaining in an established base. A server that is comfortable for five builders may need more headroom when five players travel in different directions. Treat the table as a sizing band and monitor behavior after real play sessions before inviting a larger group.
Change launcher variables in settings.cfg
ATM10’s Server-Scripts documentation puts startup variables in settings.cfg. Use one SETTING=VALUE entry per line, with no spaces around the equals sign.

MAX_RAM=12G
DEFAULT_WORLD_TYPE=your_world_type
MAX_RAM controls the JVM’s maximum memory allocation. Set it to a value your physical machine can sustain while leaving operating-system headroom. The exact value should follow the player and workload bands above, not simply the amount of installed RAM.
DEFAULT_WORLD_TYPE changes the world type used when a new world is created. Change it before generating that world. Changing a default does not retroactively convert an existing world.

Do not edit ServerStart.bat or ServerStart.sh. The official documentation states: “Do not modify ServerStart.bat or ServerStart.sh”. Put supported changes in settings.cfg so updates can replace launcher files without erasing your configuration.
Use server.properties for vanilla rules
The root-level server.properties file is where Minecraft’s vanilla server controls belong. Typical controls include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- difficulty and default game mode;
- whitelist behavior and maximum players;
- view distance and simulation distance;
- the server message of the day (MOTD);
- the listening port.
Stop the server before editing the file, change one setting at a time, save a known-good copy, and restart when the setting requires it. Keep the backup beside your update notes so you can restore a working configuration after a pack upgrade. A value in this file cannot replace a mod-specific rule stored in the world’s configuration directory.
Find mod-specific settings in the active world
NeoForge mods commonly generate server-side configuration beneath the active world’s serverconfig directory. The path includes the actual save name:
saves/worldName/serverconfig/
ATM10’s FAQ identifies FTB Essentials’ file as:
saves/worldName/serverconfig/ftb-essentials.snbt
That file controls FTB Essentials behavior for /home, /back, and /rtp. If one of those commands is unavailable or behaves differently from your rules, stop the server, open the file for the live world, and adjust the relevant entries using valid SNBT syntax. The exact path changes with the world name, and generated files can differ between pack releases, so do not edit a similarly named template from another save.

A safe command-setting workflow
- Stop the server and make a backup of the world and its
serverconfigdirectory. - Confirm the world folder name in
saves; use that name in the path. - Open
ftb-essentials.snbtin a text editor that preserves plain text. - Change only the entry related to the behavior you need, preserving punctuation and data types.
- Save the file, restart the server, and test
/home,/back, or/rtpwith a permitted player account. - If startup fails or the command remains unavailable, restore the backup and reapply a smaller change.
Because these are world-level files, changing a configuration in one save does not automatically change another save on the same server installation.
Restart and update discipline
Use a clean stop before editing or replacing files. Keep the server pack release, Java path, settings.cfg, server.properties, and world backups together in your change records. When updating, first confirm that a server pack exists for the target ATM10 release, then back up the current folder, install the new files, and carry forward only the settings you have intentionally reviewed.
Do not assume a setting survived an update simply because the server launched. Check memory allocation, Java 21 selection, player limits, distances, and mod command behavior after the first restart.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches can run ATM10, but they shift responsibility in different ways.
| Concern | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| File and hardware control | Direct access to files, Java, storage, and CPU | Depends on the provider’s panel and plan |
| Setup effort | You install Java, the server pack, firewall rules, and backups | The provider reduces operating work, but you still configure the pack |
| Updates | You choose and pin each ATM10 release | Panel tooling may help, but it must expose version selection and server files |
| Backups | You design and verify the backup routine | Check what is included, how often it runs, and whether world files can be restored |
| Compatibility checks | You verify Java 21, NeoForge, storage, and RAM yourself | Confirm the service supports Java 21, NeoForge, large server uploads, and release pinning |
When self-hosting makes sense
Self-hosting suits an administrator who wants unrestricted access to settings.cfg, server.properties, world files, and Java. It is also practical when you already have NVMe storage, spare CPU capacity, and a reliable backup and firewall process. The trade-off is continuous administration: operating-system updates, network exposure, Java maintenance, backups, and recovery are your responsibility.
When managed hosting makes sense
A managed service reduces routine machine administration, but the panel must support the details ATM10 needs. Before paying, verify that you can upload the large server pack, select Java 21, run NeoForge, pin the exact pack release, edit or download settings.cfg and server.properties, reach the world’s serverconfig files, and restore a complete backup. A one-click installer is not enough if it hides the files required for command or performance changes.

Troubleshoot the problems that settings usually cause
The client cannot connect
Check the exact ATM10 release on both sides, then check the Minecraft and NeoForge versions. Reinstall the matching client or server pack if one was updated independently. A version mismatch should be resolved before changing gameplay settings.
The server reports a Java error
Verify that the launcher points to Java 21 and that the executable still exists. On multi-Java systems, inspect the path used by the supplied script rather than trusting the operating system default.
The process runs out of memory or becomes unstable
Compare MAX_RAM with the planning band for the concurrent player count, then leave host memory available for the operating system. Reduce simultaneous load by checking exploration, automation, view distance, and simulation distance before assuming that assigning the entire machine to Java will solve the problem.
/back or /rtp is missing
Open the active world’s saves/worldName/serverconfig/ftb-essentials.snbt, confirm that you edited the live world, and inspect the relevant FTB Essentials entries. Restart after saving and test with an account that has permission to use the command.
A configuration change disappears
Confirm that you edited settings.cfg or the active world’s configuration rather than a launcher script or an unrelated template. Restore the last working backup, then reapply the change in the supported file.
