All the Mods Server Not Working: Fix Crashes and Startup Errors

A practical, evidence-first guide to All the Mods startup failures: collect the right logs, verify Java and loader versions, rebuild from the correct server pack, isolate bad mods and adjust memory safely.

When an All the Mods (ATM) server will not start, stop restarting it and collect the evidence first. Copy latest.log, debug.log, any file in crash-reports/, and logs/serverstart.log. Then verify the pack’s required 64-bit Java version, rebuild from the matching server pack if necessary, and fix the first mod or library named in the stack trace. Increasing RAM alone will not repair a Java, loader, dependency, or file-layout mismatch.

Start with the failure evidence

A generic message such as “server stopped” is only the final symptom. The useful cause is usually earlier in a stack trace. Do not delete logs or repeatedly launch the server before saving them. Repeated starts can overwrite the most useful context, especially when a script rotates or truncates output.

Files to copy

  • latest.log — NeoForge support identifies this as the most important log because it contains Forge/NeoForge and mod output.
  • debug.log — the more detailed companion log, when the pack or loader creates it.
  • crash-reports/crash-*.txt — the report generated for a crash during startup or runtime.
  • logs/serverstart.log — AllTheMods startup scripts use this file for Java, folder, EULA, launch and crash diagnostics.

Save the newest copy of each file before changing the installation. Search from the bottom upward for ERROR, Exception, Caused by, Missing, Unsupported, mod, Java and OutOfMemoryError. The first named mod, mixin, library or missing dependency is generally more actionable than the last “server stopped” line.

Where the files are and how to share them safely

These files are inside the active server directory, not necessarily the directory where your client launcher stores its profile. Look beside the server launch script for latest.log, debug.log, crash-reports and logs. If a host panel offers a file manager, download the files before using a restart button. Compress the copied logs into an archive when sending several files, but remove account credentials, private IP addresses and other secrets first. Keep the original filenames and timestamps so you can tell which run produced each message.

Fast diagnosis by symptom

What you see Most useful evidence First action
Window closes immediately or script reports Java failure serverstart.log and the Java check output Run the executable selected by the script, confirm the required major version and 64-bit architecture, and remove conflicting Java paths.
“Missing”, “failed to load” or dependency errors The first Caused by entry and the named mod/library Compare that file and its dependencies with the exact server-pack manifest; restore a clean copy instead of guessing replacements.
Forge/NeoForge reports an incompatible version Pack metadata, loader line in latest.log, and the crash report Install the exact Minecraft version, loader family and loader build required by the pack revision.
Server says the EULA is not accepted eula.txt and serverstart.log Read the EULA, set eula=true if you agree, save the file in the server directory, and launch again.
“OutOfMemoryError” or an exit during world/mod loading The final memory exception and the JVM arguments Check available host memory, then adjust -Xms and -Xmx while leaving operating-system headroom.
Dedicated server fails after copying a client profile The mod named in the stack trace and the pack manifest Start from the supplied server pack; remove a client-only component from the server while keeping the client installation only if the pack supports it.

1. Verify Java before changing mods

ATM scripts validate Java and warn that an installation that is missing, too old, or not 64-bit may prevent the server from running correctly. The required major version depends on the specific ATM release and its Minecraft/loader combination, so use that pack’s instructions rather than a general Java recommendation.

Check the Java that the script actually uses

Run the same executable configured in the launcher, not merely whichever java happens to be first on your system path.

java -version

On Windows, also inspect the path selected by the batch or PowerShell launcher (for example, a configured JAVA_HOME or explicit executable). On Linux, use which java and readlink -f "$(which java)" to see the target. A version number that looks right is insufficient if the script is launching a different installation.

Confirm architecture

The server needs a 64-bit Java runtime. A 32-bit runtime can fail validation or leave too little address space for a large modpack even when the version number is correct. Replace it with a 64-bit build and update the script or service configuration to point directly to it. If several Java installations are present, remove stale entries from PATH or use an absolute path in the startup configuration.

Do not skip the script’s validation

The AllTheMods shell and Windows scripts perform Java checks. Bypassing those checks can leave a server that appears to launch but cannot load the pack reliably. Treat a warning in serverstart.log as a prerequisite failure, not as harmless output. If Java validation fails, fix that first and rerun the unmodified script so later errors are not mixed with the original one.

2. Use an exact client, server, Minecraft and loader match

Every player and the dedicated server must use the same ATM release and the corresponding Minecraft version. The loader must also match: Forge and NeoForge builds are not interchangeable, and a build that is merely newer or “close” can still reject mods compiled for the required one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the four values

  1. Write down the complete ATM pack revision shown by the launcher or pack metadata.
  2. Record the Minecraft version.
  3. Record whether the pack uses Forge or NeoForge.
  4. Record the exact loader build, not just the loader family.

Compare those values with the loader and mod lines in latest.log. The ATM FAQ advises using the correct Forge version rather than simply installing the latest version. Apply the same discipline to NeoForge: the required build is the one declared by that pack revision.

Install the dedicated server pack

When the pack provides server files, download the server package for the same release used by the clients. A client instance contains files that a dedicated server should not load, and a server pack may include a different set of configs, libraries, scripts and launch arguments. Do not copy a client mods directory wholesale as a substitute.

Before downloading, check the release label rather than relying on a browser’s most recent download. After extraction, compare the included manifest and loader files with the client’s release. If the server package has its own installer, let it fetch or generate the libraries it expects instead of mixing files from another ATM version.

3. Rebuild a clean server without losing the world

A clean server-pack rebuild has the highest certainty that files match the manifest. An in-place repair is quicker when the mismatch is obvious, but it can preserve a hidden wrong version. Preserve the world and configuration before replacing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safe rebuild procedure

  1. Stop the server and make a complete backup of the world directory, server.properties, whitelist/ops files, scripts, and any custom configuration you need.
  2. Create a new, empty server directory. Avoid nesting the installation inside another pack or launching the script from a different working directory.
  3. Extract the server pack for the exact ATM release into that directory.
  4. Run its supplied installer or startup script once so it can create libraries, configs and generated files.
  5. Complete the EULA prompt, then stop the clean instance after it reaches the normal initial setup point.
  6. Copy back only the backed-up world and deliberately reviewed settings. Do not overwrite the clean mods, libraries, loader files or scripts with client files.
  7. Launch again and compare the new logs with the saved failing logs.

This approach also fixes a common folder error: running a script from a parent directory where it cannot find its libraries, configs or eula.txt. The ATM scripts check folder conditions and record those failures in serverstart.log.

Protect the world during testing

Never test a suspected fix on the only copy of a world. Stop the process cleanly, copy the complete world directory, and label the backup with the ATM release and date. Keep the old installation untouched until the rebuilt server has started, accepted connections and loaded the world successfully. Copying only selected region files or only the mods folder is not a complete rollback plan.

4. Complete first-run and folder checks

EULA acceptance

The server will stop until the EULA is accepted. Read the file, change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree, and save it beside the server launcher. Editing an eula.txt in another directory has no effect.

Working directory and permissions

Launch from the directory containing the pack’s scripts and libraries. Verify that the account running the service can read the files and write logs, configs and the world. A script can appear to run while failing to create a log or library because it lacks permission or is pointed at a read-only location. A service account may also use a different home or working directory from your interactive shell, so check the paths printed in the startup log.

  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

Launcher choice

Use the script supplied with the server pack. It may set the loader classpath, Java path, JVM arguments and restart behavior that a manually typed command omits. If you must customize it, keep the original command backed up and change one setting at a time. Confirm that any scheduled task, system service or control-panel command points to this same script and directory.

5. Follow the first meaningful mod or dependency error

Mod-loading errors often contain several layers. Read the stack trace from the first specific component named after Caused by, then verify that component against the clean pack manifest.

Missing or incompatible dependency

Restore the exact dependency version from the server pack. Do not download a similarly named file or replace a library with the newest release unless the pack documentation explicitly requires it. A dependency can be present but still incompatible with the Minecraft or loader version. Check both the filename and the version line in the log; a duplicate jar with a different version can create the same symptom as a missing dependency.

Client-only content on a dedicated server

Rendering, menu, shader and other client-side mods can fail when loaded in a headless server environment. NeoForge notes that classifying a mod is not always obvious and may require trial and error. If the log identifies a client-only component, remove it from the dedicated server and test again; retain the client copy only when the pack’s design supports that separation. Do not remove an entire group of mods at once, because that obscures which file caused the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixin and transformation failures

When a report names a mixin target, first check the named mod and its declared dependencies. Restore the clean server-pack versions before trying to disable anything. Removing an apparently unrelated library can simply move the failure to a later stage and make diagnosis harder. Record the exact class, target and mod name from the report before making a change.

One-change isolation

  1. Back up the current server state and logs.
  2. Change only the named mod, dependency or loader component.
  3. Start once and capture a fresh latest.log.
  4. If the error changes, compare the new first cause with the previous one.
  5. Restore the clean file when the change does not match the pack manifest.

6. Tune memory only after the installation is correct

The pack’s JVM arguments expose -Xms, the initial heap, and -Xmx, the maximum heap. Increase them only after Java, loader, EULA, folder and mod checks pass. There is no single authoritative RAM figure for every ATM release: requirements vary with pack revision, world, loader and player count.

Set a defensible heap range

  • Check the host’s total RAM and leave headroom for the operating system, remote-management tools and other services.
  • Set -Xms to a reasonable starting heap rather than allocating all memory immediately.
  • Set -Xmx below the host’s usable capacity; a larger maximum cannot repair a missing mod or wrong loader.
  • Change one value at a time and record the result in the startup log.

An OutOfMemoryError during loading justifies a memory review. A missing-class, unsupported-version or client-only error does not. If the host has several services, measure the memory available to the server process rather than using the machine’s installed total. After changing the arguments, confirm in the startup output that the intended values were actually passed to Java.

Choose the recovery path

Path World preservation Time to recovery Match certainty Control
In-place repair High if backups are made Usually fastest when one cause is clear Medium; hidden mismatches can remain Full control over files, Java, RAM and networking
Clean server-pack rebuild High when the world is copied back deliberately Longer initial setup Highest, because files come from one manifest Full control after installation
Managed modded-server hosting Depends on the provider’s backup and migration tools Often simpler for installation, updates and restarts Depends on the provider’s supported pack and version selection Less direct control over Java, filesystem and launch arguments

Choose an in-place fix when the log clearly identifies one wrong file and you have a backup. Rebuild when several versions are mixed, the client folder was copied, or the loader and pack revision are uncertain. Managed hosting can reduce Java, memory, update and restart administration, but verify that the provider supports the exact ATM release and gives you the settings and backups you need. Compare the plan’s storage, backup, restart and version-selection features rather than choosing on a generic “modded” label alone; prices and included controls vary by provider and current plan.

What a healthy startup should establish

  • The script selects the intended 64-bit Java executable and accepts its required major version.
  • The working directory contains the server-pack files, and the script can read libraries and write logs/configuration.
  • The EULA is accepted in the active server directory.
  • The loader reports the exact Minecraft and Forge/NeoForge versions required by the ATM release.
  • No stack trace identifies a missing dependency or client-only class.
  • Heap arguments are appropriate for available host memory and no OutOfMemoryError appears.
  • The server reaches its normal ready state and writes a new, complete latest.log.

Official guidance in plain language

“IF Java is not installed, too old, or not 64-bit, the server probably won’t start/run correctly.” — AllTheMods Server-Scripts

“The most important log file is latest.log which contains all of Forge’s and any mod’s output for info of above.” — NeoForge support

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my All the Mods server start at all?

Save latest.log, debug.log, crash reports and logs/serverstart.log first. Then check the Java version and 64-bit architecture, the exact ATM/Minecraft/Forge or NeoForge versions, EULA and working directory. The first specific mod or dependency named in the stack trace is usually the next fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Java version does All the Mods need?

It depends on the ATM release and its Minecraft and loader versions. Follow that release’s instructions, use a 64-bit runtime, and verify the executable selected by the startup script rather than assuming the first java on PATH is being used.

Where are latest.log and the crash report?

Look in the active dedicated-server directory: latest.log and usually debug.log are in logs, crash files are in crash-reports, and the AllTheMods script diagnostic is logs/serverstart.log. A hosting panel may expose these through its file manager.

Can I copy my client’s mods folder to the server?

Do not do that as a baseline. Use the dedicated server pack for the exact ATM release. Client-only rendering, menu or shader mods can fail on a dedicated server, and the server pack may contain different configs, libraries and launch files.

Should I install the newest Forge or NeoForge build?

No. Match the exact loader family and build declared by the pack revision. A newer or merely close build can reject mods compiled for the required Minecraft and loader combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will adding more RAM fix a startup crash?

Only when the log shows a confirmed OutOfMemoryError. Adjust the documented -Xms and -Xmx values after checking available host memory, and leave room for the operating system. RAM cannot fix a wrong Java version, missing dependency or loader mismatch.

Is a clean rebuild safer than repairing the existing folder?

A clean server-pack rebuild gives the highest certainty that files match one manifest. Back up the world and settings, build in a new directory, then copy back only deliberately reviewed data. In-place repair is faster when one bad file is obvious but can retain hidden mismatches.

What should I do when the log names a client-only mod?

Confirm the named component in the stack trace and remove it from the dedicated server, while keeping the client copy only if the pack supports that arrangement. Classification is not always obvious, so make one change, restart once and capture a fresh log.

Is managed hosting worth using for an ATM server?

Hosting can simplify Java selection, memory settings, updates, restarts and backups, but it trades away some filesystem and launch control. Verify support for the exact ATM release, available version selection, backup and migration tools, and the current plan’s limits before moving a world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Preserve the logs, verify the pack’s exact 64-bit Java and loader requirements, and rebuild from the matching server pack when versions or files are uncertain. Then fix the first specific mod or dependency named in the trace; adjust heap settings only for a confirmed memory error.
