Nintendo’s console launched on June 5, 2025, so retailer listings should now be treated as regular purchases, backorders, or sold-out products—not automatically as pre-orders. This U.S. buying guide covers the official accessories first, then selected licensed alternatives, and explains what you actually need for handheld play, TV play, travel, storage, multiplayer, and GameChat.
Retail availability and prices change quickly. Check the individual product page, seller, fulfillment method, and return policy before ordering. Nintendo’s official Switch 2 accessories hub is the best reference for compatibility.

The short version: what should you buy first?

The console already includes Joy-Con 2 controllers, a standard Joy-Con 2 grip, a dock, an AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable, an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, and Joy-Con 2 straps. Do not buy those again unless you want replacements or a second setup.

The table below separates genuine Nintendo accessories from licensed products. “Buy now” means the product has launched; it does not guarantee that every retailer has stock. Use retailer product pages to confirm price and availability.

The storage warning most buyers miss
Do not move your old standard microSD card into a Switch 2 expecting it to store digital games. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for saving and loading Switch 2 games. Standard microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards are not a substitute for that purpose, although they can still be used for captured screenshots and videos.
When shopping, look specifically for the words “microSD Express.” Labels such as “microSDXC,” “UHS-I,” or merely “Nintendo Switch compatible” are not enough. Nintendo supports cards up to 2TB, and the console requires an internet-connected system update the first time a microSD Express card is used. See Nintendo’s microSD Express compatibility guide.
A 256GB card is a sensible starting point for someone who mostly buys physical games. If you buy downloads regularly, compare the price per gigabyte of 512GB and 1TB cards. Nintendo lists licensed options, but licensing alone does not prove that a card is the best value; verify the actual Express specification, seller, warranty, and return policy.

What is already included?
The Switch 2 package includes:
- Switch 2 console
- Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers
- Joy-Con 2 straps
- Standard Joy-Con 2 grip
- Switch 2 dock
- Switch 2 AC adapter
- USB-C charging cable
- Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable
The two common duplicate purchases are the charging grip and the extra AC adapter. The included grip holds the Joy-Con 2 controllers in a traditional controller shape, but it does not replace the separately sold charging grip.
Cases and screen protection
Buy protection designed explicitly for Switch 2. A case or screen protector made for the original Switch or Switch OLED should not be assumed to fit: the hardware dimensions and display are different.

Choose based on how you travel:
- Slim case: best for carrying only the console and controllers.
- Travel case: better if you want room for the dock, charger, cables, and games.
- Hard-shell case: useful for stronger protection and game-card storage.
- Dock-compatible shell: convenient, but confirm that the manufacturer explicitly supports dock use and that it does not interfere with ventilation or connections.
Nintendo’s official case is designed to carry the console, dock, Joy-Con 2, cables, and up to six game cards. A licensed PowerA Protection Case is another option; its listing specifies space for up to nine game cards and two microSD Express cards, an integrated stand, and a padded screen protector. Check the exact model and fit before ordering, even when a case is advertised for multiple Switch generations.
Controllers and multiplayer
Should you buy the Pro Controller?
Buy it if you primarily play on a television, prefer a conventional controller layout, or play long sessions with detached Joy-Con 2. It is not required: the console includes Joy-Con 2 and a standard grip.

Check whether a controller supports motion controls, NFC, rumble, wake-from-sleep, and any Switch 2-specific functions you care about. Official support generally reduces compatibility uncertainty.
Should you buy another Joy-Con 2 pair?
Yes, if several people need to play locally. The console’s included pair may be enough for some multiplayer games, but a second pair gives you more controller combinations. Check the game’s player and controller requirements; some multiplayer or online features may also require Nintendo Switch Online.
If only one controller is damaged or lost, look for an individual left or right Joy-Con 2 rather than automatically buying a complete pair. Colors and stock vary by product code.

What is the charging grip for?
The included grip and charging grip are different products:

- Charging grip: performs that same basic job while charging the attached Joy-Con 2 during use.
If you normally return the controllers to the console after playing, you can skip the charging grip.
Do you need the Switch 2 Camera?
Only buy the camera for a specific purpose: GameChat or a game that supports camera input. It is not a general-purpose requirement for Switch 2, and buying it does not make every game camera-enabled.
Feature availability can depend on the software, Nintendo Account, internet connection, Nintendo Switch Online, country, and other requirements. Read the game and Nintendo product disclaimers before assuming that a camera feature will work in your region or with your planned setup.

Compatibility is accessory-specific. “Works with Switch” does not automatically mean “works with Switch 2,” and Switch 2-specific Joy-Con 2 accessories are not automatically compatible with the original console.

Official versus licensed alternatives
Nintendo-branded products are the simplest choice when predictable support matters most. Licensed products from companies such as PowerA and Hori can offer more case designs, storage, stands, grips, or specialized controls. Licensing is useful evidence of platform approval, but it does not guarantee the best value or fit for every use case.
For shopping, start with Nintendo’s official accessory page, then compare individual listings at Best Buy, GameStop, and Walmart. Category pages can mix first-party, licensed, generic, marketplace, sold-out, and old-generation products. Confirm the seller, fulfillment method, exact model, return policy, and warranty on the product page.
Practical buying setups
Cheapest sensible setup
Use the accessories included with the console, then add a Switch 2-specific screen protector and a basic carrying case. Add microSD Express storage only when internal space becomes a problem.
Best official setup
Add Nintendo’s carrying case and screen protector, a microSD Express card if you buy digital games, and the Pro Controller if you mostly play on a TV.
Best travel setup
Choose a case large enough for your actual kit. If you carry the dock, charger, and cables, a slim console-only case will not be enough. A spare AC adapter is convenient for frequent travel but is not essential for occasional trips.

Best family setup
Buy an additional Joy-Con 2 pair and check each game’s multiplayer requirements. The wheel set is worthwhile only if the players want a steering-wheel shape for compatible racing games.
Best digital-library setup
Buy a genuine microSD Express card, not a standard microSDXC card. Compare 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB prices per gigabyte, and update the console online before first use.
Availability and price checks
The original launch-era pre-order listings should not be reused as current shopping information. Prices observed during launch coverage are not automatically today’s MSRP, and retailer stock can change by store, seller, and region.
Nintendo has announced a scheduled U.S. Switch 2 system price increase from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. That announcement concerns the console; it is not proof that every accessory changed price on the same date. Check each accessory listing separately.
Before ordering, record:
- Retailer and exact product page
- Price before tax and shipping
- In-stock, backorder, or sold-out status
- Whether the item is sold by the retailer or a marketplace seller
- Return window and warranty
- Exact compatibility wording
Do not treat a generic “20-in-1” bundle, a normal microSDXC card, or an accessory labeled only “compatible with Switch” as a safe Switch 2 purchase without checking the specifications.
