ModRetro’s M64 Is the N64 Revival Console of My Dreams—With One Big Catch

The M64 may be the ideal modern N64 for cartridge owners, but its missing controller and HDMI cable, accessory costs and unproven edge-case compatibility matter.

ModRetro’s M64 is one of the most convincing modern answers to the N64 problem: it accepts original cartridges, supports four controllers, outputs to modern HDMI televisions, runs silently, and avoids the maintenance burden of aging Nintendo hardware. At $229.99, it is also listed below Analogue 3D’s $269.99 price.

But the headline price is not the price of a complete multiplayer setup. The M64 includes neither a controller nor an HDMI cable, and its long-term reputation will depend on firmware maturity and independent compatibility testing. For cartridge-owning N64 fans, it may be the dream console. For everyone else, the answer is less obvious.

What the M64 is actually solving

The original N64 remains an excellent multiplayer console, but it is an increasingly awkward living-room machine in 2026. Composite video looks poor on many modern televisions, original consoles and controllers need maintenance, and a high-quality HDMI conversion can require specialist hardware or installation.

Software emulation solves convenience, but not necessarily the experience. An emulator may offer save states, rewinding and broad platform support, while still failing to satisfy collectors who want to use the cartridges already on their shelves and play through original-style hardware behavior.

  • WHAT YOU GET: Retro wireless gaming console stick video retro stick built-in, console stick with 23 emulators, dual 2.4g controllers, hdmi cable, user guide, compact white retro stick for travel.

The M64 targets that middle ground: original physical media and four-player N64 play, combined with HDMI, fast startup, silent operation and contemporary firmware features.

Why it feels like the ideal modern N64

  • Original cartridges: ModRetro advertises compatibility with original N64 cartridges and NTSC/PAL region-free support.
  • Modern video: the product page lists 720p, 1080p, 1440p and up to 4K output.
  • Four controller ports: multiplayer games such as Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007, Mario Party and Super Smash Bros. retain their living-room format.
  • Built-in memory features: Expansion Pak and Controller Pak functionality are integrated into the console.
  • Silent design: ModRetro describes the M64 as fanless.
  • Low friction: the console requires no account or login for basic play and supports Wi-Fi or USB firmware updates.
  • Physical controls: a cartridge ejector and a latch that keeps the cartridge flap open should make cleaning and removal less awkward.

ModRetro also advertises CRT-style filters, per-game-style customization possibilities and overclocking modes. Those features could make the M64 more attractive than a simple hardware replacement, but they should be treated as options to evaluate rather than proof that every game is more authentic or better behaved.

FPGA is promising, not a magic accuracy guarantee

The M64 uses a 16nm AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA. ModRetro describes it as hardware-based emulation and says its core and firmware are open source. That distinguishes it from a conventional Android or PC emulator, which reproduces console behavior as software running on a general-purpose processor.

However, FPGA does not automatically mean perfect compatibility. The meaningful questions are behavioral: game timing, audio, controller response, unusual save hardware, region-specific software, expansion accessories, display compatibility and edge-case cartridges.

ModRetro’s claims about identical timing and audio, maximum accuracy and broad compatibility remain manufacturer claims unless supported by documented independent testing. Open-source code is valuable for transparency and community development, but it does not guarantee that every hardware component is open, that every feature is complete, or that official firmware support will continue indefinitely.

The safest current description is “an FPGA-based, hardware-oriented N64 recreation.” It is not yet responsible to call it universally perfect or 100% compatible without a published test suite.

Cartridge and accessory compatibility still matters

ModRetro says the M64 accepts original cartridges and new ModRetro cartridges. That is the central reason to buy it, but “compatible with original cartridges” should not be read as “every cartridge and accessory has been independently verified.”

  • NTSC and PAL behavior on the same display;
  • cartridges with worn or oxidized connectors;
  • battery-backed saves and Controller Pak saves;
  • games requiring the original Expansion Pak;
  • Rumble Pak and Transfer Pak support;
  • flash carts, reproduction cartridges and development cartridges;
  • unusual mapper or save hardware.

Transfer Pak-related functionality and other additions discussed by ModRetro should be regarded as roadmap material unless the current retail firmware and documentation confirm that they work at launch. The same caution applies to future physical games, parts and expanded customization.

4K output does not make N64 graphics native 4K

The M64 lists output modes up to 4K at 60fps, with 48 kHz, 16-bit PCM audio. That is useful for modern televisions, but output resolution is not the same as rendering resolution. The original N64’s assets remain original N64 assets; 4K mainly gives the console more room to scale and process the image.

The important questions are whether 1080p and 4K scaling remain clean, whether CRT filters look convincing, and whether the console works reliably with OLED televisions, AV receivers, capture cards, monitors and HDMI switches. The product information also suggests that the system can detect ModRetro cartridges and offer developer-recommended filters, though that feature should be confirmed on current retail firmware.

Players seeking the most sophisticated video processing may still prefer original hardware paired with a specialist scaler. A RetroTINK-4K, for example, improves the video path from an original console; it does not replace the console’s cartridge slot, FPGA core, menus or integrated memory features.

The real price is higher than $229.99

The current ModRetro product page lists the M64 at $229.99 and marks it available. The box contains the console, a pre-installed 16GB SD card, a multi-region power adapter and a power cable. It does not include an HDMI cable or controller.

Setup Listed hardware cost before tax
M64, assuming you already own controllers and an HDMI cable $229.99
M64 plus one M64 Pro Controller $319.98
M64 plus four M64 Pro Controllers $589.95
Analogue 3D with an existing compatible controller $269.99
Analogue 3D plus one $39.99 controller, where available At least $309.98

The official M64 Pro Controller is listed at $89.99. That may be reasonable for a player who wants a new N64-style controller, wireless features and cross-device compatibility. It is a much more serious expense for a household trying to outfit four players.

Existing Nintendo 64 controllers and compatible third-party options therefore change the value proposition substantially. The M64 is not a ready-to-play multiplayer bundle at its base price.

The M64’s advantages are its lower listed console price, fanless design, open-source emphasis, built-in Expansion Pak and Controller Pak functionality, and advertised overclocking options. Analogue 3D is the safer choice for buyers who prioritize a more established premium product, polished display presentation and a longer public track record over openness or the lowest console price.

Overclocking could be useful—or contrary to the point

ModRetro advertises overclocking modes and says its PSRAM architecture enables higher overclocking. This could reduce slowdown in selected games, but it should not be treated as a universal enhancement.

Overclocking may alter timing-sensitive behavior, introduce glitches or make a game less faithful to original hardware. The useful implementation would provide clearly identified safe and enhanced profiles, reversible settings and per-game persistence. Players who want original performance should leave it disabled; players seeking smoother results may welcome it after checking game-specific behavior.

Software, updates and platform risk

The M64 supports Wi-Fi firmware updates and a USB update path. ModRetro’s support documentation says the menu can be opened with Start + Z or by holding the console’s menu control. The system’s advertised quick-start experience is appealing, but the company’s roughly five-second boot claim should be understood as a manufacturer estimate unless measured from power-on to playable input on retail hardware.

Before buying, users should establish:

  • which firmware version is installed;
  • whether Wi-Fi is required only for updates or for any play feature;
  • how offline USB recovery works after a failed update;
  • whether video, overclocking and save settings persist globally or per cartridge;
  • which parts of the firmware and FPGA implementation are publicly available;
  • whether the SD card can be replaced or restored to factory contents.

If an update fails, keep the console powered, avoid removing the SD card, retry through the wired updater and use official ModRetro support rather than improvising. Wireless updates are convenient, but they also create dependence on the company’s infrastructure.

Who should buy the M64?

Buy now if you:

  • already own original N64 cartridges;
  • want HDMI without modifying an original console;
  • regularly play four-player N64 games;
  • value silent operation, quick startup and no login;
  • want built-in Expansion Pak and Controller Pak functionality;
  • like the idea of open-source firmware and future customization.

Choose Analogue 3D if you:

  • prefer a more established premium FPGA product;
  • want an HDMI cable included;
  • care more about polished display modes than open-source extensibility;
  • are comfortable paying $40 more for the console.

Keep or restore an original N64 if you:

  • own a CRT and value original silicon above convenience;
  • already have a serious retro-video setup;
  • are comfortable with cleaning, repairs, aging controllers and possible video modifications.

Use emulation if you:

  • prioritize low cost, save states, rewinding and broad platform access;
  • do not own N64 cartridges;
  • do not need original-style multiplayer hardware or physical media.

Verdict

ModRetro’s M64 comes unusually close to the ideal N64 revival console because it understands what makes the system special: the cartridges, the controllers and the shared room, not merely the ability to display old ROMs at a higher resolution.

Its strongest case is practical and emotional. It offers a clean modern-TV setup while preserving the collection and multiplayer habits that made the N64 distinctive. Its weaknesses are equally clear: no controller or HDMI cable in the box, expensive four-player outfitting, unresolved edge-case compatibility questions and a younger firmware ecosystem than Analogue’s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the M64 a highly compelling recommendation for existing N64 owners—not a universal “best retro box.” If ModRetro’s compatibility claims hold up across difficult cartridges, saves, accessories and displays, this could be the most flexible and complete modern N64 replacement. For now, it is best understood as a dream console with a price-and-maturity catch, rather than a proven perfect replica.
