They span from the overhead stealth game Castle Wolfenstein (1981) to the VR title Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot and co-op shooter Wolfenstein: Youngblood (both 2019). The list below follows release order, not story chronology; dates are given as years where the available history establishes only a year.
All Wolfenstein games in order of release date
This chronology counts released games, including spin-offs, but not ports, editions, expansions or cancelled projects as separate entries. The dates are first-release years supported by the sources; exact dates are included for selected modern PC listings, not treated as worldwide launch dates.

How the games differ
From stealth to first-person shooter
The franchise did not start as a first-person shooter. Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein were overhead stealth games; Wolfenstein 3D is the entry associated with the series’ landmark move into first-person shooting. That distinction explains why a complete release list covers more than shooters.
#1 Best Overall
- The Assault: Experience intense first-person combat as you go up against oversized Nazi robots, hulking Super Soldiers and elite shock troops - all rendered in stunning detail with the id Tech 5 engine
- The Action: Wildenstein's breath-taking set pieces feature intense mountain-top car chases, underwater exploration, player-controlled Nazi war machines, and much more - all combined to create an exhilarating action-adventure experience
- The Arsenal: Collect ultra-advanced Nazi-tech Break into secret research facilities and heavily guarded weapon stashes to upgrade your tools of destruction
- The Adventure: Hi-octane action and thrilling adventure weaved together into a tightly paced, super immersive game narrative
Standalone games and spin-offs count
Enemy Territory is multiplayer-only, while Wolfenstein RPG is a mobile spin-off. Cyberpilot is a VR-only title, and Youngblood is a co-op spin-off developed with Arkane Lyon. Leaving them out would answer a narrower question about mainline campaign games, not all released games carrying the Wolfenstein name.
Release order is not story order
Spear of Destiny is a prequel to Wolfenstein 3D, but it belongs after it in a release-date list because it came out later in 1992. Likewise, The Old Blood is a standalone prequel to The New Order, yet it was released in 2015, after the 2014 game. MachineGames described The Old Blood as a homage to Return to Castle Wolfenstein; that connection does not change its place in the release chronology. See MachineGames’ retrospective for the developer’s account of the modern series.

What the dates do—and do not—mean
This is a release-year chronology, not a complete worldwide launch calendar for every platform. Xbox Wire’s franchise history provides years for many older games, while Steam dates identify its PC store listings and may reflect PC availability rather than the franchise’s first release on any platform. The Return to Castle Wolfenstein date above is specifically the Windows release; later console versions are ports, not separate games in this list. For Youngblood, the cited storefront and support dates differ by one day, so both are shown with their sources.

The Xbox store’s Wolfenstein: Alt History Collection includes The New Order, The Old Blood, The New Colossus and Youngblood. The collection’s listed release date is June 30, 2020, and the store lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S support. It covers four games from the modern arc, not the complete franchise chronology. Steam’s franchise storefront lists individual games including Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and several modern releases.
