The clearest confirmed example is a level 26 Alpha Pidgey on the right-hand rooftop in Wild Zone 1, after Alpha encounters unlock. This guide distinguishes that fixed location from chance-based appearances and explains what to try if an Alpha is missing.
How to recognize an Alpha Pokémon
Alpha Pokémon are larger than their regular counterparts, have glowing red eyes, and are particularly powerful and difficult to catch, according to The Pokémon Company’s game description. They may notice, chase, and attack the player, so approach prepared rather than treating one like an ordinary wild encounter.

When Alpha Pokémon start appearing
Alpha encounters are progression-gated. Serebii says they begin appearing after the special mission “A Big Ol’ Bunnelby,” while Nintendo Life describes the unlock as meeting Emma and completing three side missions. Those accounts do not state the trigger identically, so use your in-game mission progress as the practical guide rather than assuming one universal checklist.
Confirmed Alpha location
The available location references confirm one specific landmark in detail. They do not establish a complete, version-checked list of every Alpha in the game, so the table below is deliberately limited rather than presenting an incomplete index as “all locations.”
#1 Best Overall
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
| Area | Alpha | Level | Exact landmark | Encounter type and condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Zone 1, south of Hotel Z near Vert Sector 8 | Pidgey | 24–26 in Serebii’s listing; Nintendo Life identifies level 26 | Right-hand rooftop | Guaranteed location once Alpha encounters are unlocked. Wild Zone 1 is accessible from the start, but the Alpha unlock comes later. |
The differing level presentations are worth keeping in mind: Serebii gives a level range, while Nintendo Life lists level 26. The sources do not establish why they differ.
Guaranteed locations versus chance-based Alphas
Some Alpha locations are guaranteed encounters; at other locations, a Pokémon may appear as an Alpha only sometimes. Serebii reports that chance varies by species and location, with a secondary-reference range of 5%–40%. Treat that as a guide-reported range, not an official published statistic or a guarantee for any particular target.

Wild Pokémon occupy purpose-built Lumiose City Wild Zones and can also be encountered elsewhere around the city, according to the official game description. An Alpha appearing outside a Wild Zone may therefore be a free-roam encounter rather than a fixed Wild Zone spawn.
What to do if an Alpha is not there
A missing Alpha does not necessarily mean you are at the wrong landmark. GameSpot recommends leaving the area and returning after time has passed, or changing the day-night cycle to refresh available spawns. This can refresh what is present; it does not guarantee that a particular species will appear as an Alpha. Some Pokémon are also time-specific, so check at a different time if the species itself is absent.

Why catch an Alpha?
Serebii’s reference data says Alpha Pokémon have maximum size, three randomly assigned maximum IVs, 252 HP EVs, and a Plus Move that is ordinarily learned through a mastered TM. These are secondary-reference mechanics, not claims from the official game description.
Alpha item drops are also reported to depend on species and location. Seeds of Mastery and Exp. Candy are among the possible notable drops listed by Serebii; check the relevant species and location entry rather than assuming every Alpha drops the same items.
