Am I trade-banned on Steam? If Steam says your account is trade-banned, the restriction blocks use of the Steam Community, including trading and the Community Market. But a failed trade alone does not prove you have a trade ban: holds, purchase requirements, cooldowns, game-specific limits, or an item restriction can also stop a transaction.
Try the affected trade or market action and read the reason Steam displays. Then check your account’s restriction or lock notice for the scope and explanation. Steam’s official guidance is available through Steam Support.
What a Steam trade ban means
A trade ban is a restriction Steam applies to an account’s use of the Steam Community. Steam says it prevents trading and using the Community Market. Steam describes trade bans as employee-applied and says they are issued to accounts determined to have been involved in scamming activity. Most are permanent, though temporary bans can occur. A failed transaction is not enough to establish that your account is trade-banned. Steam lists several other conditions that can prevent or delay a trade or Market action; the message shown for the affected action is the most useful first check.

How to check whether your account is trade-banned
- Retry the action that failed. Attempt the trade or Community Market action and read Steam’s displayed explanation. Steam says the reason for a trading or Market restriction is typically shown when you try to perform the affected action. See Steam’s trading and Market restrictions help page.
- Check your account notice. Review any restriction or account-lock notice from Steam. Steam says its account-lock notification identifies what is restricted and why. Steam’s restricted-account guidance describes account notices.
- Match the message to the scope. Note whether it affects Steam Community trading and the Market broadly, only one game’s items, or a particular item. An item’s inventory entry may show when it becomes tradable or marketable.
- Use Steam Support’s official help site for account-specific questions. Do not trust unsolicited messages from people claiming to be Valve or Steam Support. Steam warns that its employees will not contact users through chat systems such as Steam Chat or Discord to resolve account issues.
What else can block or delay a trade?
These restrictions differ in what they affect, why they apply, and how long they last. A restriction message or item notice can help you distinguish them from a Steam trade ban.

What to do if the notice confirms a trade restriction
Steam Support says it cannot modify trade or Community Market restrictions, regardless of the circumstances that caused them. Steam also limits details about why an account was trade-banned or locked, explaining that malicious users could use those details to avoid detection. Do not assume that an appeal or support contact will remove a trade ban. Steam’s restrictions FAQ and restricted-account guidance set out these limits.

If the notice instead points to a game ban, Steam directs players to the game’s developer for an appeal. For an item lost through a trade, Market transaction, deletion, or gift, Steam says Support does not restore the item. Game-ban guidance and Steam’s item-restoration policy cover these cases.

Protect your account while checking
- Use Steam’s official Support site rather than a link sent by an unsolicited account claiming to be Support.
- Never share your password or Steam Guard codes with someone claiming to investigate an account restriction.
- Steam warns against anyone claiming to be Valve or Steam Support and asking you to verify items for an investigation or security reason.
