If AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition opens briefly and then closes, the problem is usually with the Windows software installation, a driver-version mismatch, corrupted Windows components, or interference from another background program—not proof that your Radeon graphics card has failed.
Start by checking your Windows version, Radeon model, and installed driver version. If you are running Windows 10, Adrenalin 26.6.2, and a Radeon RX 7000-series or newer GPU, check AMD’s documented launch-failure advisory first: AMD directs affected users to the 26.6.3 Hotfix Preview. For other configurations, work through the repair sequence below, beginning with the least destructive steps.

1. Check the specific Adrenalin 26.6.2 Windows 10 issue
AMD documented a problem in which Adrenalin can fail to launch after installing version 26.6.2 on certain Windows 10 systems with Radeon RX Series graphics. The affected environment includes Windows 10 systems using Radeon RX 7000-series and newer graphics products.
To check whether this is your situation:
- Press Win + R, type
winver, and press Enter to identify your Windows version. - Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and note the Radeon model.
- Right-click the Radeon adapter, choose Properties, open the Driver tab, and record the driver version.
- Check whether the installed Adrenalin package is 26.6.2.
If all three conditions match—Windows 10, Adrenalin 26.6.2, and a supported newer Radeon RX card—install AMD’s 26.6.3 Hotfix Preview rather than repeatedly repairing the same installation. AMD’s release notes list support for Windows 10 64-bit version 21H2 and later and Windows 11 version 21H2 and later. When moving back to an earlier Adrenalin version, AMD recommends using AMD Cleanup Utility first.

Restart the computer before uninstalling anything. A pending Windows installation or update can interfere with AMD’s installer and leave the control application and display driver out of sync.
After restarting:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Install available updates and restart again if Windows requests it.
- Try opening Adrenalin from the Start menu.
Also record whether you are using a desktop, gaming laptop, or prebuilt PC. Laptop and OEM systems can require manufacturer-customized graphics drivers for features such as display switching, power management, hotkeys, and external-monitor support.
3. Look for evidence of a driver mismatch
Adrenalin is the user interface, while the Radeon display driver is the component Windows uses to communicate with the GPU. If those components come from different versions—or if Windows replaced one of them—the interface may close immediately.
In Device Manager > Display adapters, look for:
- A yellow warning icon beside the Radeon adapter.
- A generic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of the Radeon device.
- A driver version that does not correspond to the Adrenalin installer you recently used.
- The Radeon adapter disappearing or appearing with an error after a reboot.
These signs support a software or installation problem. They do not, by themselves, establish that the graphics card is defective.

Windows may expose repair controls for AMD Software, although they are not available for every conventional desktop application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find AMD Software.
- Open its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if that option is present.
- Select Repair and test Adrenalin.
- If it still closes, return to the same screen and choose Reset, if available.
Repair attempts to fix the installation without removing all application data. Reset can remove Adrenalin preferences and other stored application data, so you may need to recreate graphics profiles or tuning settings afterward.
5. Reinstall Adrenalin from AMD
Download the package for the exact Radeon model and Windows version from AMD’s official Drivers and Support area, using AMD’s Auto-Detect tool or Product Selector. Avoid third-party driver mirrors and packages intended for a different Radeon family.
On a laptop or OEM desktop, check the manufacturer’s support page as well. If the AMD reference package repeatedly causes the launch problem, the system maker’s graphics package may be the correct choice because it can include vendor-specific display and power-management components.

Choose the correct software type
Current Adrenalin installers can offer several installation types:

Driver Only is not a final solution if you need Adrenalin’s control panel. If the display driver works normally but Driver Only is stable while the full interface crashes, the remaining problem is likely within the Adrenalin software layer or an application conflict.
Use Factory Reset carefully
If the installer offers Factory Reset, it can remove earlier AMD Software package versions before installing the new one. AMD says the process temporarily pauses Windows Update during installation.
Factory Reset also removes the ability to roll back to the previously installed driver. Do not select it casually if you need an easy return to your current version. Close games and unrelated applications first. AMD also recommends temporarily disabling antivirus, firewall, remote-access, and streaming software when those programs interfere with installation. Re-enable security software immediately after the installation or test.
6. Perform a clean reinstall with AMD Cleanup Utility
Use AMD Cleanup Utility when a normal uninstall or the installer’s Factory Reset does not resolve the problem. It removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and AMD software so that you can install the package again from a cleaner state.
AMD recommends running the utility in Windows Safe Mode for the best results. The screen may flicker or go temporarily blank, and AMD notes that cleanup can take approximately 15 to 20 minutes in some cases. Do not interrupt it simply because the display changes. A reboot is required when cleanup finishes.
Clean-reinstall sequence
- Download the correct Adrenalin installer before removing the current driver.
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support page.
- Optionally disconnect the PC from the internet during cleanup and installation. This can reduce the chance of Windows immediately installing a different display driver; it is a troubleshooting precaution rather than a universal requirement.
- Boot Windows into Safe Mode.
- Run AMD Cleanup Utility and allow it to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the previously downloaded AMD package.
- Choose the appropriate software type. Use Default or Minimal if you need the Adrenalin interface.
- Restart again.
- Test Adrenalin before reinstalling overlays, monitoring tools, RGB utilities, capture software, or tuning utilities.
AMD’s general guidance is to try a normal uninstall through Windows Installed apps first and reserve AMD Cleanup Utility for conflicts that ordinary removal does not fix. Do not manually delete AMD folders, registry entries, or random DLL files as a substitute for the official cleanup process.
7. Check whether Windows replaced the driver
After reinstalling, Windows Update can sometimes supply a different display-driver version, creating another mismatch between the active driver and the Adrenalin interface.
If the problem returns after Windows updates:
- Check the active version in Device Manager > Display adapters > Radeon adapter > Properties > Driver.
- Compare it with the package version you installed.
- Check the computer manufacturer’s support page if this is a laptop or prebuilt system.
- Use the OEM graphics package if the manufacturer specifically requires it.
Do not install a generic desktop Radeon package on a laptop merely because the GPU name looks similar. Confirm the complete system model and the manufacturer’s driver instructions first.
8. Repair Windows system files
If Adrenalin still closes after a clean driver installation, the Windows component store or protected system files may be damaged. This is more likely if other applications are crashing, Windows Update is malfunctioning, the AMD installer reports an operating-system error, or the issue began after an interrupted update.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWhen DISM finishes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannowRestart Windows after both scans complete, then test Adrenalin. DISM repairs the Windows component store that can supply replacement files; SFC checks protected Windows system files and replaces corrupted versions when possible. Running SFC before DISM can leave it without a healthy source for repairs, which is why Microsoft’s recommended order is DISM followed by SFC.
Optional: a third-party Windows diagnostic utility
If the wider Windows installation has repeated application crashes or unexplained system abnormalities after you have tried the official AMD and Microsoft tools, an optional Windows system diagnostic tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may help identify additional Windows settings, services, update, or application-crash issues.
This is not an AMD-authorized fix, and it is not endorsed by AMD or Microsoft. Results can vary. Treat it as a secondary diagnostic option—not a replacement for AMD Cleanup Utility, DISM, or SFC—and review any proposed changes before applying them.
9. Use a clean boot to find background-software conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs while disabling third-party services and startup items. If Adrenalin opens normally in that state, another program is probably interfering with it.
Potential offenders include:
- GPU overlays and game launchers
- Hardware-monitoring and overclocking utilities
- Game capture and livestreaming software
- RGB-control applications
- Third-party antivirus or firewall software
- Remote-access tools
- System-tuning utilities
Use Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure, restart, and test Adrenalin. If it works, re-enable services and startup items in groups, restarting between tests, until the failure returns. Then update, reinstall, or remove the identified program. A clean boot shows that interference exists; it does not prove which application is responsible until you isolate it.

If Adrenalin stopped launching immediately after a known driver update, install a previous AMD driver that supports your Radeon model and Windows version. For a downgrade, AMD’s hotfix documentation recommends using AMD Cleanup Utility first rather than layering the older package over the newer one.
Read the older package’s release notes before installing. A rollback can restore the control panel but may remove fixes, game optimizations, or security and compatibility improvements from the newer release. If the older version works, avoid upgrading again until AMD publishes a version that addresses the issue.
11. Try System Restore only after identifying a recent change
Windows System Restore can be appropriate if the failure began after a recent driver, application, or system change and a restore point exists from before the problem.
Before using it:
- Back up important personal files.
- Note which applications and drivers were installed recently.
- Understand that applications, drivers, and settings installed after the restore point may be removed or reverted.
System Restore is more targeted than resetting Windows, but it is not guaranteed to repair a damaged AMD installation. Reinstall the correct AMD package afterward if necessary.

12. Use Windows Reset or installation media only as a last resort
A full Windows reset is disproportionate for an Adrenalin launch failure unless the computer has broader, persistent system corruption that the preceding steps cannot repair. Microsoft’s Keep my files option preserves personal files but still removes applications and settings. Other reset choices can remove personal files as well.

Back up important data and retain your BitLocker recovery key before using Windows recovery. If Windows cannot boot or its recovery environment is damaged, Microsoft identifies removable installation media as another route to repair or reinstall Windows.
For that contingency, a USB flash drive for Windows recovery media can be used to create installation or recovery media. It is not required for the normal AMD driver-repair sequence; it is simply a practical fallback when ordinary recovery options fail.
What the symptom does—and does not—tell you
Adrenalin closing immediately is a software symptom. It can result from an incompatible package, incomplete installation, corrupted Windows files, or a conflicting service. It does not alone prove that the Radeon GPU, power supply, or motherboard is faulty.
Hardware investigation becomes more appropriate if you also see persistent artifacting, crashes in multiple graphics applications, GPU errors in Device Manager after a clean installation, black screens under load, overheating, or failures that remain after testing a known-good driver and a clean Windows environment. Even then, rule out the driver and system causes before buying replacement hardware.

Does AMD Adrenalin closing mean my graphics card is defective?
Usually not. Adrenalin closing by itself does not prove that the Radeon card has failed. Check the driver installation, Windows system files, and conflicting background software first. Hardware becomes more suspect if you also see artifacts, repeated GPU errors, black screens under load, or crashes across multiple graphics applications.
Can I repair AMD Adrenalin without reinstalling the driver?
Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps > AMD Software > Advanced options. Choose Repair if available, then Reset if Repair does not help. These controls are not exposed for every AMD desktop installation, and Reset can remove application preferences.
