Average, Minimum, Maximum, and Low Frame Rates Not Showing: How to Fix It

If a live FPS counter is visible but average FPS, minimum FPS, maximum FPS, 1% low, or another low-frame-rate value is blank, the usual cause is simple: the tool is displaying telemetry but is not recording a benchmark. Calculated statistics require a completed interval of frame-time samples.

If a live FPS counter is visible but average FPS, minimum FPS, maximum FPS, 1% low, or another low-frame-rate value is blank, the most likely explanation is that the software is displaying telemetry but is not currently recording a benchmark. Average, minimum, maximum, and percentile figures require a completed set of frame-time samples; they cannot be calculated from a single live FPS reading.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start a real benchmark or frametime capture, confirm that the requested metric is enabled in the active overlay profile, and inspect the completed report afterward. If the problem occurs only in one game, also test for an incompatible graphics API, display mode, or conflicting overlay.

What the missing values mean

Value What it requires What it may be called
Current FPS A live frame-rate measurement FPS, Framerate
Average FPS A series of collected frames over a defined interval Average, AVG
Minimum FPS The lowest recorded sample in the capture Min, Minimum
Maximum FPS The highest recorded sample in the capture Max, Maximum
1% low Frame-time or percentile analysis over a completed capture 1% Low, P1, 99th-percentile frame-rate equivalent
0.2% low A more restrictive percentile calculation from captured data P0.2

The labels are not standardized. CapFrameX exposes Average, P1, P0.2, Min, and Max. NVIDIA FrameView documents average FPS and percentile values such as the 90th, 95th, and 99th percentiles rather than necessarily using the label “1% low.” Therefore, a missing “1% low” may simply mean that the application calls the same type of result P1 or a percentile value.

Fix the problem in the right order

1. Identify whether you need live telemetry or a benchmark result

First decide what you are trying to see:

  • Live FPS: the current frame rate while you play.
  • Benchmark statistics: average, minimum, maximum, 1% low, P1, P0.2, or other values calculated after recording.

A live overlay can show FPS perfectly while leaving all calculated statistics blank. Do not use an idle or newly launched overlay to judge whether average and low values work. Those fields remain unavailable until the tool has collected enough frames.

2. Enable the requested metric in the active overlay profile

A completed capture does not automatically make every statistic appear in the in-game overlay. The metric must also be selected in the software’s overlay settings.

CapFrameX

  1. Open CapFrameX.
  2. Open the Overlay tab.
  3. Check that the required entries—such as Average, P1, P0.2, Min, or Max—are present and enabled.
  4. Make sure the correct overlay profile is active.
  5. If entries are missing or showing zero values, use the Overlay tab’s Reset control.

CapFrameX separates the overlay from its post-capture analysis. A record can contain the statistics without those statistics being selected for the OSD. After a capture, open the record in Analysis to verify that the values exist independently of the overlay.

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Open the Performance section and select Metrics.
  3. Select the metrics you want to monitor.
  4. Confirm that the metrics are configured to be shown in the overlay.
  5. Enable Show Metrics Overlay.

AMD’s metrics interface treats metric selection, overlay visibility, and logging as separate choices. A metric can therefore be available in the performance page or log while being hidden from the in-game overlay.

MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server

In MSI Afterburner, the normal on-screen display can show live telemetry, but benchmark values need a benchmark recording session. Open RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) Setup, enable Benchmark mode, and assign start- and stop-benchmark hotkeys. Start the benchmark before testing the game and stop it after the test interval.

Use MSI Afterburner’s monitoring and OSD settings to add the relevant values to the active display profile. If the benchmark hotkeys have not been activated, average and 1% low values may not update even though current FPS is visible.

3. Start an actual capture or benchmark

This is the most commonly missed step.

For CapFrameX

  1. Launch CapFrameX.
  2. Start a frametime capture using the configured capture control.
  3. Run a repeatable scene or gameplay sequence for a fixed interval.
  4. Stop the capture.
  5. Open the resulting record in Analysis.
  6. Check Average, P1, P0.2, Min, and Max there before troubleshooting the overlay further.

For RTSS benchmark mode

  1. Open RTSS Setup and confirm that benchmark mode and hotkeys are configured.
  2. Launch the game.
  3. Activate the benchmark start hotkey.
  4. Play or run the same test scene for a consistent period.
  5. Activate the benchmark stop hotkey.
  6. Check the resulting benchmark data and OSD.

Use a repeatable interval rather than letting the game sit at a menu. For example, use the same route through a game’s built-in benchmark or repeat the same section of gameplay for each run. A statistic calculated from a few seconds of menus and loading screens may be technically valid but not useful for comparing performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check the completed report, not only the in-game OSD

The overlay and the analysis report are separate failure points. If a completed CapFrameX record shows Average, P1, Min, and Max, the capture itself is working and the remaining problem is likely the overlay profile or its rendering path.

Likewise, FrameView may be able to capture and log data in a game even when its in-game overlay is unavailable. In that situation, use the post-session report or log rather than treating the missing OSD as proof that the measurements were not recorded.

If the problem happens in only one game

When the values work in one title but not another, do not immediately assume that the game’s FPS is wrong. The game may use a graphics API or presentation path that the selected overlay cannot display correctly.

Test the graphics API and display mode

  1. Test the same capture tool in a different game.
  2. If possible, test the affected game in exclusive fullscreen.
  3. Test again in borderless windowed.
  4. Test in ordinary windowed mode.
  5. If the game offers more than one graphics API, test the available alternatives.

NVIDIA FrameView documents that overlay information is not shown in DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 games, although capture and logging may still be supported. Its FrameView 1.9 release notes also document limitations involving OpenGL and Vulkan applications that use legacy fullscreen flip. Compatibility can therefore vary by API and presentation mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If changing display mode makes the statistics appear, you have identified an overlay compatibility issue rather than a failure of the game’s frame rate. You can use the mode that works for measurement or rely on the captured report after the session.

Disable competing overlays and monitoring tools

Several performance tools use similar hooks or PresentMon-based monitoring paths. Running them together can prevent one overlay from appearing or can interfere with its data collection.

For a clean test, temporarily close or disable:

  • RTSS or FRAPS when testing FrameView
  • Other FPS and frametime overlays
  • HWiNFO monitoring integrations
  • AIDA64 monitoring integrations
  • Other GPU-vendor or game-launcher performance overlays

FrameView specifically warns that another performance tool, such as RTSS or FRAPS, can stop its overlay from displaying. Its documented workaround is to launch FrameView first, start the game, wait for FrameView’s overlay to appear, and only then launch the competing tool if it is still required. For troubleshooting, however, the cleaner approach is to use one capture tool at a time.

After disabling the other tools, fully close and relaunch the game before testing. Some hooks remain attached to the game process until it is restarted.

Restart after a graphics-driver update

If NVIDIA FrameView reports invalid or N/A NVIDIA-specific values after a driver installation or update, reboot Windows before changing other settings. FrameView documents restarting the system as a remedy for this state.

Do not treat this as a universal fix for every overlay problem. It is particularly relevant when the issue began immediately after a graphics-driver change or when FrameView’s data is invalid rather than merely absent from the OSD.

Reset the overlay profile

In CapFrameX, open the Overlay tab and use its Reset control. Recreate the desired overlay entries and test a new capture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset CapFrameX configuration files

If the problem survives an overlay reset, close CapFrameX and back up its configuration directory before deleting or renaming the relevant files:

%appdata%CapFrameXConfiguration

CapFrameX documents deleting the overlay configuration files so they can be recreated. Its troubleshooting guidance also identifies AppSettings.json in that directory as a settings-reset option when corrupted or outdated application settings are suspected:

%appdata%CapFrameXConfigurationAppSettings.json

Restart CapFrameX, configure the overlay again, and perform a fresh capture. A reset removes custom settings, so do not skip the backup if you have carefully configured profiles.

A reliable diagnostic sequence

  1. Name the missing statistic: Average, Min, Max, 1% Low, P1, P0.2, or another percentile.
  2. Confirm the tool supports that label or an equivalent: look for P1 or percentile FPS if “1% low” is not listed.
  3. Enable the metric: add it to the active overlay profile or enable it in the vendor metrics settings.
  4. Start a real benchmark: activate RTSS Benchmark mode or begin a CapFrameX frametime capture.
  5. Complete the test: run a repeatable scene for a fixed interval and stop the recording.
  6. Inspect the report: verify that the values exist after capture.
  7. Remove conflicts: test with only one OSD, benchmark, frametime, and hardware-monitoring tool active.
  8. Test compatibility: try another game and switch between fullscreen, borderless, and windowed modes.
  9. Restart after driver changes: especially if FrameView shows invalid or N/A data.
  10. Reset settings as a last software step: back up profiles before resetting CapFrameX configuration.

What a successful test should look like

  • A live FPS counter is visible while the game is running.
  • A benchmark or capture start control has actually been activated.
  • The test produces a completed benchmark record or frametime capture.
  • The requested metric is enabled in the current overlay profile.
  • The statistic uses the tool’s correct name—for example, P1 instead of 1% Low.
  • No competing FPS, frametime, PresentMon, or hardware-monitoring overlay is active during the test.
  • The game’s API and display mode are compatible with the selected OSD.
  • The post-capture report has been checked separately from the in-game display.

If the live FPS counter works but the completed report contains no calculated values, the issue is with capture or benchmark recording. If the report contains the values but the overlay does not, the issue is with metric selection, the overlay profile, or compatibility. That distinction prevents unnecessary driver reinstalls and makes the next troubleshooting step clear.

Why is FPS showing but average FPS is blank?

How do I show 1% low FPS when my overlay only lists P1 or percentile values?

Why do FPS statistics work in one game but not another?

The Bottom Line

In most cases, blank average, minimum, maximum, or low-FPS fields mean that no benchmark interval has been recorded—or that the metric is not enabled in the active overlay profile. Start and stop a real capture, verify the result in the post-capture report, then troubleshoot overlay conflicts and game/API compatibility if the values remain missing.
