AMD FSR Ray Regeneration is a real feature in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, but it is not a magic FPS setting or a replacement for ray tracing. AMD describes it as a machine-learning denoiser that reconstructs ray-traced lighting data, potentially making reflections, shadows, and other lighting effects cleaner and more stable. Its main hardware target is Radeon RX 9000 Series and newer.
The feature launched with Black Ops 7 on November 14, 2025, which AMD presents as the first game officially announced with Ray Regeneration. Whether it is worth enabling depends on your GPU, ray-tracing settings, resolution, frame-time target, and tolerance for artifacts.

What FSR Redstone means
“FSR Redstone” is AMD’s name for a broader family of newer machine-learning-powered FidelityFX Super Resolution technologies. It is not one single upscaler.
AMD’s current feature table separates Redstone into several functions, including ML-based upscaling, ML-based frame generation, and ML-based ray regeneration. AMD has also renamed “FSR 4” as FSR Upscaling to distinguish the upscaler from the wider Redstone family. Ray Regeneration, FSR Upscaling, and frame generation should therefore not be treated as interchangeable terms.

What Ray Regeneration actually does
Ray tracing relies on samples collected from rays to calculate reflections, shadows, indirect lighting, and related effects. At playable frame rates, a game often cannot cast enough rays for every pixel to produce a naturally clean image. The result can be noise, shimmer, flickering reflections, unstable fine detail, or breakup in dark areas.
A denoiser reconstructs a more coherent result from those limited samples. AMD characterizes Ray Regeneration as a neural-network-based denoiser that processes raw ray-traced data to produce more realistic lighting. In practical terms, the pipeline is:

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ray-traced samples → neural denoising and reconstruction → lighting and reflections → upscaling and display
Ray Regeneration does not add an unlimited number of rays, create the game’s entire ray-tracing system, or generate extra display frames. It processes ray-traced information already produced by the game.
That makes it different from the other common FSR options:

- FSR Upscaling: reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution internal render.
- Frame Generation: creates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames.
- Ray Regeneration: reconstructs or denoises ray-traced lighting data.
The technologies can be combined, but they address different stages of rendering.

Ray Regeneration is most relevant when ray tracing is active. In a matched comparison, inspect:
- Reflections on wet floors, glass, metal, and other glossy surfaces.
- Fine shadow detail and contact shadows around characters and objects.
- Flickering, crawling, or breakup during camera movement.
- Noise and instability in dark scenes.
- Detail retention when using a lower internal resolution.
- Ghosting or smearing around fast-moving players, weapons, and effects.
Do not assume every difference comes from Ray Regeneration. Upscaling quality, sharpening, motion blur, temporal anti-aliasing, screen-space reflections, texture streaming, frame generation, and the ray-tracing preset can all change the image.
How to make a fair comparison
- Use the same game build and AMD driver.
- Keep resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing options, and upscaling mode identical.
- Capture the same camera position, preferably both while stationary and while moving.
- Compare Ray Regeneration off and on at 100% image scale.
- Check several scenes instead of relying on one screenshot.
AMD’s “vivid realism” style of promotional language should not be treated as independent proof that the feature improves every scene or every Radeon card.
Which GPUs support Ray Regeneration?
| Hardware or tier | What can safely be concluded |
|---|---|
| Radeon RX 9000 Series and newer | AMD’s listed target for the complete FSR Redstone feature set, including ML-based Ray Regeneration. |
| Radeon RX 7000 Series | AMD lists ML-based upscaling support, but does not present the full Redstone feature set as supported in the same way. |
| Radeon RX 6000 Series and older | Do not assume Ray Regeneration support. |
| NVIDIA or Intel GPUs | The game may run on supported hardware, but AMD FSR Redstone Ray Regeneration support should not be assumed. |
The important distinction is between FSR support and support for this specific ML-based feature. A game can offer older temporal or spatial FSR options on hardware that cannot use Ray Regeneration.

You do not need an RX 9000 GPU to play Black Ops 7
An RX 9000 card is not required to run Black Ops 7. Activision’s published PC specifications list an RX 470 with 3 GB of VRAM as the minimum Radeon GPU, an RX 6600 XT with 8 GB as the recommended Radeon GPU, and an RX 9070 XT with 16 GB for its competitive/high-refresh or 4K Ultra target.
Those categories describe game-running targets—not universal Ray Regeneration compatibility. An RX 470 may meet a minimum requirement while lacking access to the newer Redstone feature.
Check the official Black Ops 7 PC requirements and Activision support documentation for the live requirements.
How to enable it
Exact menu labels can change with patches, languages, and game modes, so avoid relying on an old menu path. On a supported Radeon system:
- Update Black Ops 7 through its normal launcher.
- Install the latest compatible AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition driver.
- Launch the game and open its graphics or display settings.
- Locate the ray-tracing and FSR-related options.
- Enable Ray Regeneration if the option is exposed by the current build.
- Apply the change and allow shaders to compile if prompted.
- Restart the game if the setting is missing or remains unavailable.
Activision’s PC page currently displays AMD driver version 25.9.2 in its version information, but driver requirements are volatile. Use the latest compatible official driver rather than assuming that an older listed number remains current.
If the option is missing
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the exact GPU model; “Radeon RX” branding alone is not enough.
- Update the game and driver, then reboot the PC.
- Verify that ray tracing is enabled.
- Reset graphics settings to their defaults and check again.
- Rebuild shaders if the game provides that option.
- Disable third-party overlays or graphics injectors temporarily.
- Check whether the feature is unavailable in the current mode or patch.
Laptop Radeon configurations may differ from desktop cards, so do not infer support from the family name alone.

Does Ray Regeneration increase FPS?
Not necessarily. Ray Regeneration is primarily an image-quality feature. Its neural processing can add overhead, although a cleaner reconstruction may allow a particular configuration to use fewer rays or a lower internal resolution. The result can be faster, slower, or effectively unchanged depending on the scene and settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Measure more than the average FPS counter:
- Average frame rate.
- 1% lows and frame-time consistency.
- Input latency.
- GPU utilization and VRAM use.
- Visual artifacts during movement.
AMD lists an 82 FPS at 4K Black Ops 7 figure for the RX 9070 XT on its product page. That is an AMD-published benchmark claim, not an independently reproducible result from the page alone: the exact preset, upscaling mode, Ray Regeneration state, frame-generation state, CPU, driver, and test route are not established there.
Likewise, do not describe Ray Regeneration itself as a “huge FPS boost.” Frame generation may increase displayed frame counts, but it is a separate technology and must be evaluated separately for latency and artifacts.
Recommended settings by player type
Competitive profile
- Disable or minimize ray tracing if it harms frame time or visibility.
- Use a low-latency upscaling configuration appropriate to your resolution.
- Test frame generation separately; higher displayed FPS does not automatically mean lower input latency.
- Target the highest stable refresh rate rather than the best-looking reflections.
For a competitive player, a cleaner reflection may matter less than consistent frame times and responsive controls.
Quality profile
- Enable ray tracing.
- Enable Ray Regeneration on a supported RX 9000-series card.
- Select an FSR upscaling mode appropriate for your target resolution.
- Test frame generation separately and keep it only if its artifacts and latency are acceptable.
Leave Ray Regeneration disabled if it produces ghosting, smearing, shimmer, unstable reflections, or inconsistent frame times in the scenes you play.

The concepts are comparable, but that does not make the implementations identical. A meaningful quality comparison requires matched captures using the same resolution, ray-tracing settings, camera movement, driver/game versions, and performance target. There is no basis here for declaring one universally superior.

What about consoles?
The confirmed announcement is framed around PC hardware and Radeon support. Do not assume that the same Ray Regeneration branding or controls are available on PlayStation or Xbox. A shared game-engine feature can exist across platforms without exposing identical settings or vendor names.
Separate PC security requirements from graphics support
Activision lists TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot as required for PC play, with other security measures potentially enforced. These requirements are unrelated to FSR Redstone. If the game will not launch, check system security settings before treating the GPU feature as the cause.
Should you buy an RX 9000 GPU for it?
Do not buy a new graphics card solely for Ray Regeneration in one game. The feature is tied to a specific game implementation and a narrow hardware-support tier. Consider your wider needs:

AMD’s RX 9070 XT product page identifies a 16 GB RX 9000-series card and publishes the 82 FPS 4K claim for Black Ops 7. AMD’s launch documentation listed a starting price of $599, but that was launch pricing and does not establish the retail price in September 2026.
Existing RX 7000 owners should not upgrade merely because the game supports “FSR.” They can still benefit from whichever conventional or ML upscaling features their hardware and the game expose. Players who want to test Black Ops 7 before buying it can also check the official purchase and Game Pass information; subscription availability, pricing, and regional terms can change.
Bottom line
FSR Redstone Ray Regeneration is a meaningful technical addition to Black Ops 7, but “transforms graphics” is promotional framing, not a universal test result. On a supported RX 9000-series GPU with ray tracing enabled, it can make ray-traced lighting and reflections cleaner or more temporally stable. It is not the same as upscaling or frame generation, does not guarantee higher FPS, and is unlikely to justify a GPU purchase by itself.
