Yes: a genuine 12 MB Creative 3dfx Voodoo2 rendered Quake II on a modern AMD Ryzen 9 9900X system. The demonstration used a PCIe-to-PCI bridge, Windows 11 23H2, and experimental community driver work—not emulation or a modern GPU pretending to be a Voodoo2.

The result is a remarkable compatibility experiment, but not a practical upgrade path. The Voodoo2 remained a 3D-only accelerator, Windows 11 support was unofficial, driver-signature enforcement had to be disabled, and Voodoo2 SLI failed on the modern bridged setup.

What was actually demonstrated?

Retro-hardware creator Omores connected a 1998-era Creative 3dfx Voodoo2 with 12 MB of memory to an AM5 system built around AMD’s Ryzen 9 9900X. The card was first tested under Windows 98, then made visible to 32-bit Windows 10 and finally to 64-bit Windows 11 through experimental driver work.

The important distinction is that the Voodoo2 itself handled the Glide 3D rendering. This was not a wrapper running on the Ryzen system’s modern graphics hardware. Quake II launched through the card’s native Glide path, demonstrating that original Voodoo2 silicon can still be initialized on a radically newer platform.

Omores documented the result in December 2025. The creator identified the Windows 11 installation as version 23H2. One secondary report called it “23H3,” but that appears to be a reporting error; the primary account is the better reference for the tested version.

Omores’ account provides the original hardware and driver details, while HotHardware’s coverage adds secondary technical context.

Why the Ryzen 9 9900X pairing is notable

The Ryzen 9 9900X launched on August 15, 2024 for AMD’s AM5 platform, with modern PCIe and DDR5-era infrastructure. The Voodoo2, by contrast, was designed for the late-1990s PCI ecosystem and operating systems that predate 64-bit Windows.

That contrast makes the experiment interesting, but the Ryzen processor did not meaningfully boost Voodoo2 performance. The old accelerator remained the limiting component. In the Windows 98 test, Omores reported approximately 62 frames per second in Quake II at 800×600—roughly the practical resolution ceiling reached in that setup.

AMD’s official Ryzen 9 9900X specifications explain the modern host platform; they do not imply that the processor or every AM5 motherboard will reproduce this result.

How a PCI Voodoo2 reached an AM5 motherboard

Modern AM5 motherboards generally do not provide a native legacy PCI slot. Omores therefore used a StarTech PCIe-to-PCI expansion enclosure from the company’s relevant product family, including the PEX2PCI4-style hardware.

The enclosure accepted only half-length cards, so the Voodoo2 had to operate outside the enclosure rather than fitting inside it normally. That detail matters: this was not a simple matter of inserting the card into an adapter and installing a driver.

A PCIe bridge is also not electrically identical to a motherboard’s original PCI controller. Bus mastering, DMA, latency, reset behavior and device enumeration can differ. The external link and cable add another possible source of instability, particularly when multiple cards are involved.

Omores reported that other PCI graphics cards were unstable and connected some of that behavior to latency from the long external connection. The Voodoo2 was more cooperative, but that does not make the setup universally compatible. A different motherboard, bridge revision, BIOS or Voodoo2 board could behave differently.

The operating-system progression

Windows 98: the most authentic success

Windows 98 was the least surprising environment because original Voodoo2 drivers were designed for it. On the Ryzen system, the card operated with its period driver stack, launched Quake II through Glide and produced the reported approximately 62 FPS at 800×600.

Omores also reported a strong single-card 3DMark 2001 result. In that comparison, the final reference driver outperformed custom “Fast Voodoo” drivers by roughly 20 percent. That is a reported result from this project, not an independently reproduced benchmark or a universal ranking of Voodoo2 drivers.

Windows 10 32-bit: patched legacy support

The Voodoo2 could also operate under 32-bit Windows 10 using patched or community-supported drivers. This was possible partly because Windows 10 remained the last mainstream Windows desktop release with a 32-bit edition.

That compatibility should not be confused with official Microsoft or 3dfx support. It is a legacy-driver workaround whose success depends on the specific card, software package and system configuration.

Windows 11 23H2: experimental 64-bit driver work

The Windows 11 result required substantially more intervention. The setup used experimental 64-bit Voodoo driver work associated with Ryan “Colourless” Nunn, replacement Glide DLLs connected to earlier Windows XP 64-bit compatibility work, and a fix for a “map memory” initialization error.

Driver-signature enforcement also had to be disabled. That allows unsigned or otherwise untrusted kernel-level code to load, weakening an important Windows security boundary. It is not a harmless gaming toggle and should not be treated as a normal installation step on a work or daily-use computer.

Omores additionally reported that changing the card’s PCI position in the adapter helped resolve a Windows 11 failure. That is an observed troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed procedure.

What the driver shim proved

Original Voodoo2 drivers expected old Windows kernel behavior and a legacy PCI environment. The experimental 64-bit work adapted enough of that software stack for x64 Windows to recognize and use the card.

The first driver installation was not sufficient: the Glide “map memory” error remained until the Glide DLLs were replaced with files associated with older XP 64-bit work. This illustrates why the result should not be presented as a turnkey public driver package. Community binaries may have uncertain maintenance, compatibility, provenance and redistribution status.

The success proves that the compatibility layers can be reconstructed. It does not mean that Windows 11 officially supports Voodoo2 hardware.

What running Quake II proves—and what it does not

The successful launch establishes that:

  • A real Voodoo2 can be initialized on at least one modern AM5 system.
  • The card can participate in a native Glide rendering path under the demonstrated configuration.
  • Quake II can render through that path under experimental Windows 11 support.
  • A 1990s 3D accelerator can still perform its original function when its software dependencies are carefully reconstructed.

It does not establish that every Glide game will work. Games may depend on different Glide versions, DOS or Windows behavior, copy-protection systems, resolution assumptions or undocumented driver features. Omores warned that many Glide titles may still fail to start under Windows 10 or Windows 11.

It also does not make the Voodoo2 a modern graphics card. The board was a 3D-only accelerator and historically required a separate 2D adapter and pass-through arrangement. It cannot replace a current GPU, provide modern graphics APIs or offer contemporary display resolutions and features.

Why Voodoo2 SLI failed

Two Voodoo2 cards could historically be linked through SLI, allowing them to coordinate rendering. In the modern bridged configuration, however, two-card SLI was unstable or unsuccessful.

The same cards still ran SLI on a period-correct Pentium II system, albeit with glitches. That suggests the cards’ SLI capability was not universally dead. The likely problem area is the modern bridge and enclosure topology, card interaction, timing or some combination of those factors—but the demonstration does not isolate one definitive cause.

Multiple cards increase the number of variables involving enumeration, bus mastering, synchronization, driver behavior and power. Anyone experimenting should start with one card and treat SLI as a separate, considerably less reliable project.

Should you try this?

Only if you want an isolated retro-hardware engineering project and already have the appropriate equipment. The experiment is a reasonable fit for someone who owns a Voodoo2, can use a spare machine, understands legacy operating systems and driver archives, and accepts incomplete game compatibility.

It is a poor fit for a daily driver, a workstation containing important data, or anyone expecting plug-and-play Windows 11 support. The bridge can be expensive, the card may not fit mechanically, the driver stack is experimental, and disabling signature enforcement introduces a real security concern.

Make a full backup, use a dedicated test installation or spare system, keep the machine offline when practical, and restore normal Windows security settings after testing. Do not assume that files used in the demonstration are safe, current or appropriate for every Windows build.

More practical ways to play Glide-era games

Use a period-correct PC

A Pentium II- or Pentium III-era system with a native PCI slot remains the cleanest hardware match. It avoids the PCIe bridge and offers the best chance of using Voodoo2 SLI, provided the cards, cable and drivers are healthy.

Use 86Box

86Box emulates period PC hardware, including systems with 3dfx graphics. It avoids vintage-card maintenance, specialized expansion hardware and unsigned Windows kernel drivers, though configuring an accurate emulated system can take time and host performance.

Use a Glide wrapper

For simply playing classic games on current hardware, dgVoodoo2 is generally the more practical choice. It translates legacy Glide and other older graphics APIs for modern systems, making higher resolutions, portability and stability easier to achieve.

A wrapper does not reproduce the exact behavior of original Voodoo2 silicon. That is precisely the trade-off: it is better for playing the games, while real hardware is better for preservation, experimentation and authenticity.

The real significance of the experiment

The achievement is not that a Ryzen 9 9900X somehow made a 1998 accelerator fast. The significant result is that original Voodoo2 hardware rendered a Glide game on a modern platform after someone bridged the PCI interface, reconstructed parts of the 64-bit driver stack and worked around Windows security and memory-mapping problems.

That makes the project valuable as compatibility engineering and hardware preservation. It remains fragile, unsupported and impractical as an everyday gaming configuration.
