AMD CEO Lisa Su provided two broad hardware-timing updates during AMD’s February 3, 2026, Q4 2025 earnings call: Valve’s AMD-powered Steam Machine was described as on track to begin shipping in early 2026, while Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox silicon was progressing toward a 2027 launch.
Those comments are meaningful, but they are not complete product announcements. AMD did not disclose an exact date, price, specifications, preorder schedule, or final retail lineup for either device. The Xbox timing is an AMD supplier-side target, not a formal Microsoft release-date confirmation.

What Lisa Su actually disclosed
The two statements concerned different stages of development:
- Valve Steam Machine: Su said the system was on track to begin shipping in early 2026.
- Next-generation Xbox: She said AMD’s semi-custom SoC work for Microsoft was progressing well enough to support a 2027 launch.
“Begin shipping” does not necessarily mean broad availability in every country or delivery of every configuration. Likewise, development progressing toward a 2027 launch does not mean Microsoft has locked that year publicly.

The original report appeared on February 4, 2026. Since the early-2026 Steam Machine window has now passed, it should be treated as a previously stated target rather than a current promise. The available evidence does not independently establish whether Valve shipped on schedule, delayed the system, changed its configurations, or revised its pricing.
The reported earnings-call comments are the source for Su’s timing statements. AMD’s 2025 annual filing separately confirms AMD’s semi-custom relationship with Xbox Series consoles and identifies Valve’s Steam Machine PC among products using AMD semi-custom technology.
The next Xbox has a 2027 target—not a confirmed release date
AMD is supplying the semi-custom system-on-chip being developed for Microsoft’s next Xbox generation. A semi-custom SoC typically combines customer-specific processor, graphics, and multimedia functions into one chip, but AMD’s comment reveals very little about the finished product.

Microsoft has not, in the evidence available here, announced:
- the product’s final name or model lineup;
- an exact launch day, month, or quarter;
- price or regional availability;
- CPU or GPU architecture;
- core count, memory technology, or memory capacity;
- ray-tracing or AI hardware;
- power requirements or performance targets; or
- the details of backward compatibility.
It is therefore incorrect to say that AMD “confirmed the Xbox launches in 2027.” The more accurate description is that Su pointed to 2027 as the development and launch target AMD was working toward. Microsoft controls the consumer-facing announcement and could change the timetable, product strategy, or number of devices before release.
Why the Xbox timing matters
A 2027 target would place Microsoft’s next major hardware generation earlier than some expectations based on a conventional console-cycle pattern. It also indicates that Microsoft is continuing to develop dedicated Xbox hardware while expanding Xbox software and services across PCs, mobile devices, televisions, and cloud platforms.

That broader strategy does not establish what form the next Xbox will take. AMD’s comments do not prove that it will be a traditional living-room console, handheld, hybrid, or PC-like system. They only confirm that AMD is developing semi-custom silicon intended to support Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox plans.

During the same earnings discussion, a question connected a weaker near-term gaming outlook with the expected ramp of the next-generation Xbox in 2027. Su said that as the new generation ramps, a reversal in the trajectory would be expected. That is business context—not a forecast of Xbox unit sales, Microsoft revenue, AMD gaming revenue, the number of models, or the launch quarter.
Steam Machine timing was also broad
The Steam Machine statement concerned a product that had already been revealed, rather than an unnamed system still in development. Even so, “early 2026” was an intentionally wide shipping window.

The phrase does not establish:
- a fixed retail launch event;
- delivery to every reservation holder;
- availability of all configurations at once;
- global distribution; or
- a final manufacturer-suggested retail price.
AMD’s filing confirms the silicon relationship, but it does not supply Valve’s final retail specifications or purchasing terms. The Steam Machine’s operating-system experience, game compatibility, controller support, storage options, repairability, and regional availability remain matters for Valve’s own product information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could memory costs affect price or timing?
Rising memory and storage costs, associated in part with demand from the artificial-intelligence sector, were part of the concern surrounding the Steam Machine. Higher prices for DRAM and SSD storage can increase a system’s bill of materials, put pressure on the final retail price, or complicate supply planning.
That is a risk assessment, not proof of a delay. The available evidence does not establish that a memory shortage caused Valve to postpone the Steam Machine, that Valve had finalized a particular price before costs rose, or that AMD guaranteed component availability. The same caution applies to the Xbox: a supplier’s development target does not guarantee that final production schedules will remain unchanged.

What this means if you are deciding what to buy
Current Xbox owners
Waiting makes sense if you already have an Xbox Series console and want a substantial generational upgrade. But do not wait solely because an AMD executive mentioned 2027 if you need hardware now. A sale-priced current Xbox provides immediate access to the existing Xbox library and ecosystem, while the next generation’s specifications and price remain unknown.
PC and Steam users
The Steam Machine could appeal to players who want a more console-like way to access a Steam library on a television. Its value will depend heavily on its final price and performance. A system priced like a compact PC may offer convenience but not the upgradeability of a conventional desktop.
Before buying, check SteamOS compatibility, anti-cheat support, Linux game support, storage expansion, controller requirements, warranty coverage, and regional availability. Do not assume that AMD-powered hardware will behave like a current Ryzen or Radeon product, or that a PC-like price will automatically deliver PC-like upgradeability.

A handheld PC connected to a television may be a flexible alternative, but it involves compromises in performance, thermals, display output, portability, and living-room convenience. It should not be treated as an equivalent to the unrevealed next Xbox or the unpriced Steam Machine.
Readers considering Game Pass or cloud access
Xbox services can reduce the need for an immediate hardware purchase, depending on subscription terms, supported devices, network quality, and game availability. Microsoft’s official Game Pass page is the appropriate place to check current options rather than assuming that every game or device is covered.
What remains unconfirmed
- The next Xbox’s exact release date and launch regions.
- Its name, form factor, model lineup, price, and specifications.
- Whether Microsoft will launch one device or multiple devices.
- The Steam Machine’s current shipping status as of publication.
- Steam Machine pricing, configurations, regions, and preorder arrangements.
- Whether memory or storage costs changed either product’s timetable or price.
- Independent performance, compatibility, and reliability results.
AMD’s earnings materials also include forward-looking-statement warnings covering future product timing and availability. That is another reason to distinguish a development target from a guaranteed retail event.
