Yes, the RTX 5080 Founders Edition can be affected by a genuine manufacturing anomaly that makes it report 104 ROPs instead of the expected 112. NVIDIA later acknowledged that some early-production RTX 5080 GPUs were affected and advised owners to seek a replacement through the board manufacturer. The issue was rare, production was corrected, and it does not mean every RTX 5080 is defective.
What happened to the RTX 5080?
The RTX 5080 joined a wider set of Blackwell GPUs reported with one disabled raster-operation partition on February 24, 2025. A Reddit user posted a GPU-Z reading from an RTX 5080 Founders Edition showing 104 ROPs, although the normal specification is 112.

The report was initially just a screenshot, but it was later associated with a validated TechPowerUp database entry, making a simple monitoring-tool error less likely. NVIDIA acknowledged the RTX 5080 connection on February 25, saying that an early production build had been affected and that the manufacturing anomaly had been corrected.

What ROPs do
ROP stands for Raster Operations Pipeline, often shortened to raster-operation unit. ROPs handle important final stages of traditional graphics rendering, including pixel output, blending, antialiasing operations, and writing completed framebuffer data to memory.
They are not interchangeable with CUDA cores, Tensor cores, RT cores, texture units, or streaming multiprocessors. An RTX 5080 reporting fewer ROPs does not, by itself, indicate that it has lost CUDA cores or ray-tracing hardware. The problem is concentrated in the raster-output portion of the graphics pipeline.
Why does GPU-Z show eight fewer ROPs?
NVIDIA described the defect as one fewer ROP partition, while GPU-Z shows a drop from 112 to 104 ROPs. These descriptions refer to the same hardware change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn this GPU, one raster-operation partition contains eight ROP units. Therefore:
| GPU | Normal reading | Affected reading |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5090/5090D | 176 ROPs | 168 ROPs |
| GeForce RTX 5080 | 112 ROPs | 104 ROPs |
| GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | 96 ROPs | 88 ROPs |
So the card is not missing eight unrelated ROP partitions. It is reporting one disabled partition containing eight ROP units.

How much performance does the defect cost?
NVIDIA characterized the average graphical-performance impact as 4%, while saying that AI and compute workloads were unaffected. That figure should be treated as NVIDIA’s average estimate rather than a guaranteed loss in every game.
TechPowerUp’s architectural framing puts the loss of eight ROPs at roughly 4.54% less raster hardware. That is a hardware-capability calculation, not a prediction that every game will run 4.54% slower.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →One reported Time Spy comparison showed an approximately 12.7% lower result, but a single synthetic benchmark cannot establish the expected result for all RTX 5080 owners. Community testing has also suggested widely varying game-level effects: some workloads showed little or no measurable difference, while others were hit more substantially.
The practical impact depends on what limits a workload:
- ROP-heavy rasterized games may lose more performance.
- Shader-, CPU-, memory-bandwidth-, or ray-tracing-limited games may show a smaller difference.
- AI and compute workloads were described by NVIDIA as unaffected.
DLSS or frame generation can change a game’s overall frame rate, but there is no evidence that software features restore physically disabled ROP hardware.

How to check an RTX 5080 for missing ROPs
- Download GPU-Z from TechPowerUp.
- Launch the utility and open the main Graphics Card tab.
- Find the ROP count beneath the Subvendor field.
- A normal RTX 5080 should report 112 ROPs.
- A reading of 104 ROPs is consistent with the reported anomaly.
Before contacting support, save a screenshot that includes the GPU model, BIOS information, driver version, and ROP count. Confirm that GPU-Z has identified the exact card correctly. If the result is unexpected, a second utility or a clean driver installation can provide additional confidence, but neither is a hardware repair.
The original RTX 5080 report showed 104 ROPs despite the user having installed a current NVIDIA driver. A driver update or BIOS update should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed fix.
What affected owners should do
NVIDIA’s stated remedy was to contact the card’s board manufacturer for a replacement. For an RTX 5080 Founders Edition, first determine which company handles warranty service in your region; retailer, NVIDIA, and regional warranty partners may use different procedures.
Gather the following before opening an RMA:
- Purchase receipt or order record
- Card serial number
- GPU-Z screenshot showing 104 ROPs
- Photographs of the card and packaging
- Model and BIOS details
Ask for the instructions in writing and clarify whether the replacement is new or refurbished, whether it comes from a corrected production batch, who pays return shipping, and how its warranty is handled. Back up system settings and remove any overclock before shipping the card.
The available information does not establish a universal recall, refund policy, replacement turnaround time, or mandatory replacement program in every market. The correct RMA route and consumer protections depend on the card model and buyer’s geography.

Should you avoid buying an RTX 5080?
There is no evidence supporting a blanket ban on every RTX 5080. NVIDIA described the issue as rare and concentrated in an early production build, and said the anomaly had been corrected. However, no public serial-number range or universal pre-purchase batch-checking method is documented in the supplied sources.
New buyers should choose a retailer with a clear return policy and test the card soon after delivery. Check the ROP count before the return window expires, and keep the receipt and diagnostic evidence. A later-production card should not be described as guaranteed immune unless the manufacturer or seller can verify its batch.
Used-card buyers face additional risks: warranty transfer may be unclear, the card may have been modified or repaired, and a seller’s screenshot might come from another GPU. Require a live GPU-Z demonstration or test the card immediately after delivery, preferably while return rights still apply.

The evidence confirms that RTX 5080 cards were included in the manufacturing anomaly, but it does not show that the Founders Edition design caused the problem. Reports across the broader RTX 50-series incident involved multiple board partners, and not every card of an implicated model should be presumed affected.

Most importantly, the story has moved beyond an isolated report: NVIDIA acknowledged the early-production issue and directed affected customers toward replacement. Owners can verify the hardware in minutes with GPU-Z, then preserve the result and contact the responsible warranty provider if the card reports 104 ROPs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many ROPs should an RTX 5080 have?
A normal RTX 5080 should report 112 ROPs in GPU-Z.
Can a driver fix an RTX 5080 reporting 104 ROPs?
There is no evidence that a driver restores the disabled hardware. NVIDIA’s stated remedy was replacement through the board manufacturer.
Does the issue reduce CUDA, Tensor, or RT cores?
No. The reported anomaly concerns one disabled raster-operation partition, not those other processor types.
Can a serial number identify an affected card?
The supplied information does not provide a public serial-number range or definitive consumer-facing batch lookup.
