AMD Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT: What the 20%–40% Performance Claim Really Means

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Short answer: AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT do not deliver 20%–40% more electrical power or a blanket 20%–40% performance lead over NVIDIA. AMD’s claim is more than 20% higher average 1440p performance for the RX 9070 and more than 40% for the RX 9070 XT versus AMD’s own RX 7900 GRE, measured using AMD’s testing.

Independent comparisons generally put the RX 9070 XT near NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5070 Ti in conventional rasterized gaming. AMD’s card is often the better value when its retail price is lower, while NVIDIA remains stronger in demanding ray tracing and path tracing and is typically more power-efficient.

What AMD’s 20%–40% claim actually means

AMD’s headline figures describe performance gains against AMD’s own previous-generation Radeon RX 7900 GRE, not a universal 20%–40% advantage over NVIDIA. In AMD’s launch testing at 1440p, the Radeon RX 9070 was reported to deliver more than 20% higher average gaming performance than the RX 7900 GRE, while the RX 9070 XT was reported to deliver more than 40% more.

Those are AMD’s internal benchmark results and should be attributed to AMD. Independent testing paints a more nuanced picture: the RX 9070 XT is broadly competitive with the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti in conventional rasterized gaming, sometimes leading and sometimes trailing, while NVIDIA remains stronger in the most demanding ray-tracing and path-tracing workloads. The word power in the original headline is also misleading if it means electricity consumption. The 20%–40% figure refers to gaming performance, not lower power draw or better electrical efficiency.

What the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT are

Released on March 6, 2025, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT are AMD’s RDNA 4 desktop graphics cards. AMD positions both primarily for high-refresh 1440p gaming, with enough performance for 4K in suitable games and settings. The XT is the faster model and also the more power-hungry one.

The Radeon RX 9070 XT has:

  • 64 compute units and 64 ray accelerators;
  • 128 AI accelerators;
  • 4,096 stream processors;
  • 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory interface;
  • a boost frequency of up to 2,970MHz;
  • a 304W typical board-power rating; and
  • AMD’s recommendation for a 750W system power supply with two 8-pin auxiliary power connectors.

The standard RX 9070 reduces the compute-unit count to 56 but retains 16GB of memory. That capacity is important in this segment because the directly comparable RTX 5070 has 12GB, although memory capacity alone does not determine overall gaming performance. GDDR7 also has different bandwidth and platform characteristics than the Radeon cards’ GDDR6, so a simple capacity comparison should not be treated as a complete memory-performance test.

RX 9070 XT versus RTX 5070 Ti: close in rasterization

Broad average gaming performance

The most defensible summary is that the RX 9070 XT and RTX 5070 Ti trade blows in ordinary rasterized games. A later 52-game comparison found the RTX 5070 Ti approximately 1.4% faster at 1440p and about 4% faster at native 4K. Those margins are close enough that the result for an individual buyer can change with the game library, resolution, quality preset, driver version and whether upscaling is enabled.

That result does not mean the cards are identical in every game. The RX 9070 XT led in several rasterized titles, including examples such as Forza Horizon 5, Final Fantasy XVI, Ghost of Tsushima and selected high-quality Baldur’s Gate 3 tests. The RTX 5070 Ti held substantial advantages in other titles, including some competitive shooters and Red Dead Redemption 2. A card that wins a particular benchmark is not automatically the better choice for every library.

Ray tracing and path tracing change the result

RDNA 4 is a meaningful step forward for AMD ray tracing. AMD says its third-generation ray accelerators more than double ray-tracing throughput per compute unit compared with the previous generation. That is a substantial architectural improvement, but it does not make the RX 9070 XT the undisputed leader in every ray-traced workload.

NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti is generally stronger when ray-tracing demands become extreme, especially with path tracing. In one cited test of Doom with path tracing enabled, the RTX 5070 Ti nearly doubled the RX 9070 XT’s performance. The exact gap varies by game and settings, but this is the clearest reason to choose the NVIDIA card despite similar broad rasterization results.

For buyers who mostly play rasterized games with ray tracing disabled or used selectively, the RX 9070 XT can offer comparable real-world performance at a lower purchase price. For buyers who specifically want path-traced lighting, the NVIDIA advantage is more meaningful than a small overall average would suggest.

Upscaling and frame generation must be compared separately

Displayed frame rates are not directly comparable unless the test identifies how each frame was produced. Native rendering, conventional upscaling, ray reconstruction, frame generation and multi-frame generation are different workloads.

NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series cards support DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation, while AMD promotes FSR and features such as HYPR-RX. Frame-generation technologies can raise the displayed FPS counter substantially, but they also involve different image-generation methods and latency behavior. A benchmark that compares NVIDIA Multi Frame Generation with native AMD output is not an equivalent test of rendering performance. Look for results that separate:

  • native rasterized performance;
  • upscaled performance without frame generation;
  • ray-traced performance;
  • frame-generation performance and latency; and
  • path-traced performance, when relevant.

RX 9070 versus RTX 5070: the more complicated matchup

The standard RX 9070 is the closer price-class rival to the RTX 5070. Both had a $549 US launch starting price, but AMD’s card provides 16GB of GDDR6 while NVIDIA’s card provides 12GB of GDDR7.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Radeon’s additional 4GB can be a practical advantage for buyers who expect larger textures, higher-resolution assets or longer ownership. It does not guarantee higher FPS: GPU architecture, memory bandwidth, game-engine behavior, driver support, ray tracing and upscaling all affect the result. The RX 9070 should therefore be treated as a workload-dependent alternative to the RTX 5070, not as a universal winner based on VRAM capacity.

The decision is relatively straightforward if the two cards are close in price and your priority is conventional 1440p gaming with a preference for more memory headroom: the RX 9070 is the more appealing specification. The RTX 5070 becomes more attractive when you place a high value on NVIDIA’s ray-tracing performance, DLSS ecosystem, CUDA-dependent applications, creator software or encoding features.

Value depends more on street price than launch MSRP

At launch, AMD positioned the RX 9070 XT at $599, $150 below the RTX 5070 Ti’s $749 starting price. That was an aggressive comparison, but launch MSRP is not the price a buyer necessarily encounters months later.

A later comparison published in 2026 described the RX 9070 XT as selling for approximately $700 while RTX 5070 Ti cards were closer to $1,000. At that kind of gap, near-tied rasterized performance makes the Radeon considerably easier to recommend for ordinary gaming. If the cards are priced close together, NVIDIA’s ray tracing, software and efficiency advantages deserve more weight.

Before buying, compare the actual prices of specific partner cards rather than comparing only the names on the box. A premium cooler, factory overclock, warranty terms, retailer return policy and local availability can all change the effective value. The same logic applies to the standard RX 9070 and RTX 5070: the nominal launch prices are useful context, not a permanent buying guide.

If you have decided that AMD’s performance profile fits your games, compare current partner-board offers for a Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card rather than assuming every model has the same cooler, dimensions, noise level or price.

Power consumption and system compatibility

The XT is not a low-power alternative

The RX 9070 XT is rated at 304W typical board power, compared with 300W total graphics power for the RTX 5070 Ti. Those official ratings are close, but independent gaming tests generally find the Radeon XT less power-efficient for comparable output. One comparison measured the RX 9070 XT using approximately 20% more power than the RTX 5070 Ti during gaming.

That does not mean every system will show exactly a 20% difference. Power varies with the game, frame-rate limit, resolution, factory overclock, driver behavior and measurement method. The important correction is that AMD’s 20%–40% claim should not be interpreted as 20%–40% lower electrical consumption.

PSU and connector checklist

For the RX 9070 XT, AMD recommends a 750W power supply and specifies two 8-pin auxiliary connectors. That is a recommendation for the complete system, not a statement that every computer with a 750W label is equally suitable. Check the PSU’s age, quality, available PCIe outputs and the rest of the system’s CPU and drive load.

  • Confirm that the exact GPU model uses the expected two 8-pin connectors. Partner boards can differ.
  • Use the PSU manufacturer’s PCIe cables, not CPU/EPS cables. The plugs may look similar but are wired for different purposes.
  • Do not assume a modular cable from one PSU brand is safe to use with another brand.
  • Check whether the card includes an adapter and follow the board maker’s instructions if it does.
  • Check case length, height, slot thickness, radiator clearance and airflow before ordering.

If a build genuinely needs a replacement PCIe 8-pin GPU power cable, match the cable to the exact PSU model and connector standard. It is not a universal accessory, and buying a generic modular cable can damage hardware.

The RTX 5070 Ti also carries a 750W recommended system-power figure, so the Radeon XT does not necessarily require a different class of PSU. Its disadvantage is primarily efficiency in comparable gaming, not an entirely different power-supply category.

Which card makes sense for which buyer?

Decision guide
Your priority Better starting point Why
High-refresh 1440p rasterized gaming RX 9070 XT Strong conventional performance and often better value when priced below the RTX 5070 Ti.
4K gaming without relying heavily on path tracing RX 9070 XT Its broad rasterized performance is close to the RTX 5070 Ti, with 16GB of VRAM.
Heavy ray tracing or path tracing RTX 5070 Ti NVIDIA generally has the stronger result in demanding RT workloads.
CUDA-dependent creative or technical applications RTX 5070 Ti Application support and CUDA compatibility may matter more than game FPS.
More memory at the RTX 5070 price class RX 9070 16GB versus the RTX 5070’s 12GB, although overall performance remains workload-dependent.
Lower purchase cost for near-5070 Ti gaming performance RX 9070 XT Most compelling when actual retail pricing remains substantially below the NVIDIA card.

Buy the RX 9070 XT if…

  • Your main games are rasterized or use moderate rather than extreme ray tracing.
  • You want high-refresh 1440p performance and credible 4K capability.
  • The RX 9070 XT is meaningfully cheaper than the RTX 5070 Ti in your market.
  • You value 16GB of VRAM and do not depend on CUDA-specific software.

Buy the RTX 5070 Ti if…

  • Path tracing and demanding ray tracing are central to your game choices.
  • You depend on DLSS 4, Multi Frame Generation or NVIDIA-specific application support.
  • You use CUDA-based creative, scientific or AI software.
  • You stream or edit video and specifically benefit from NVIDIA’s ninth-generation NVENC, Broadcast or Studio-driver ecosystem.

Buy the RX 9070 if…

  • You want the standard model’s 16GB memory capacity at the $549 launch price class.
  • You are targeting 1440p and do not need the XT’s additional performance.
  • The RX 9070 is substantially cheaper than the RX 9070 XT after accounting for the rest of the build.

Match the GPU to the display

A graphics-card upgrade is easiest to appreciate when the display can show the additional frames. For a 1440p-focused system, a high-refresh 1440p monitor is a natural match for the RX 9070-series cards. Check the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, adaptive-sync support, input connections and whether its preferred output is DisplayPort or HDMI before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For 4K, decide whether you want maximum image quality, a high refresh rate or a balance of both. Ultra settings with ray tracing can push either GPU below the refresh rate of a premium 4K display, so an upscaling mode may be part of the intended setup. Do not choose a monitor solely because a GPU can produce a high average FPS in one game.

Drivers, creators and streaming

For gaming, install the current driver package from the GPU manufacturer first. AMD’s software stack includes FSR, HYPR-RX, ray-tracing support and media features. NVIDIA’s competing stack includes DLSS 4, Reflex, Broadcast, Studio drivers and NVENC. The better ecosystem depends on the applications and games you actually use.

For gameplay streaming, encoder quality, application compatibility and platform support can matter as much as the GPU’s rendering speed. NVIDIA’s NVENC and creator-oriented software are a legitimate reason for some users to choose the RTX 5070 or RTX 5070 Ti. That does not make the Radeon cards unsuitable for streaming, but it does mean that a pure gaming benchmark is incomplete for a creator-focused purchase.

Post-upgrade driver troubleshooting

If a new GPU produces crashes, black screens or missing features, begin with the official AMD, NVIDIA, motherboard and system-manufacturer drivers and verify that the monitor cable is connected to the new graphics card. Also check power connectors, temperatures and whether the problem occurs at stock settings.

Only after those steps should Windows users consider an optional third-party driver troubleshooting tool such as Outbyte Driver Updater. Outbyte describes scanning for missing or outdated Windows drivers and offering backup and restore functions, but it is not required to install Radeon drivers and should not replace the GPU manufacturer’s official package. It cannot fix inadequate power, incompatible cables, overheating or a defective graphics card.

Buying and installation checklist

  1. Check the real price today. Compare the exact RX 9070 XT or RX 9070 board with the RTX model you are considering in your region.
  2. Identify your workload. Separate rasterized games from ray tracing, path tracing, creator software and CUDA-dependent applications.
  3. Confirm the resolution target. Decide whether the system is primarily for 1440p, native 4K or upscaled 4K.
  4. Verify the case. Use the specific partner card’s length, height and thickness rather than AMD’s general product description.
  5. Verify power delivery. For the RX 9070 XT, plan around AMD’s 750W recommendation and two 8-pin connectors, then confirm the actual board and PSU requirements.
  6. Plan the display. Make sure the monitor’s refresh rate and adaptive-sync features suit the intended frame rates.
  7. Compare like with like. When reading benchmarks, check whether results are native, upscaled, ray-traced or generated frames.
  8. Install official drivers first. Treat third-party tools as optional troubleshooting aids, not as a prerequisite.

Verdict

The Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT make AMD substantially more competitive, but the most accurate headline is not that they deliver 20%–40% more power than NVIDIA. AMD’s figures describe more than 20% and more than 40% higher average performance than the RX 7900 GRE in AMD’s own 1440p testing.

The RX 9070 XT’s real strength is its combination of near-RTX-5070-Ti rasterized performance, 16GB of VRAM and the possibility of a much lower street price. The RTX 5070 Ti remains the safer choice for heavy ray tracing, path tracing, CUDA-dependent applications and NVIDIA’s software and encoding ecosystem. The standard RX 9070 is the more interesting alternative to the RTX 5070 when its 16GB memory capacity and AMD’s game performance profile matter more than NVIDIA’s feature set.

In short: choose the RX 9070 XT for value-focused 1440p or 4K rasterized gaming, choose the RTX 5070 Ti for demanding ray tracing and NVIDIA-dependent workloads, and judge both Radeon models by their actual market price rather than by AMD’s launch percentage alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RX 9070 XT 40% faster than the RTX 5070 Ti?

No. AMD’s more than 20% and more than 40% figures compare the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT with the previous-generation RX 7900 GRE in AMD’s own 1440p testing. They do not describe a universal advantage over NVIDIA. Independent testing generally places the RX 9070 XT close to the RTX 5070 Ti in rasterized gaming, with results varying by game and rendering mode.

Does the RX 9070 XT use less power than the RTX 5070 Ti?

The RX 9070 XT has a 304W typical board-power rating, while the RTX 5070 Ti is rated at 300W total graphics power. Independent gaming comparisons generally find the Radeon less efficient for similar performance, although the exact difference depends on the game, settings, frame-rate limit and board design.

What power supply does the RX 9070 XT need?

AMD recommends a 750W system power supply for the RX 9070 XT and specifies two 8-pin auxiliary power connectors. Check the exact partner card, PSU model, available PCIe cables and the power requirements of the rest of the system before installing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the RX 9070 better than the RTX 5070?

The RX 9070 has 16GB of GDDR6, while the RTX 5070 has 12GB of GDDR7. The Radeon has more capacity, but that does not guarantee higher FPS. Ray tracing, drivers, game engines, upscaling and application support can make the RTX 5070 the better choice for particular users.

Is the RX 9070 XT good for ray tracing?

The RX 9070 XT is a capable ray-tracing card and represents a major improvement over AMD’s previous generation. However, the RTX 5070 Ti is generally stronger in especially demanding ray-traced and path-traced workloads, so choose NVIDIA if those modes are central to your games.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: AMD’s 20%–40% figure is a performance claim versus the RX 7900 GRE, not a universal advantage over NVIDIA and not a power-efficiency claim. The RX 9070 XT is a strong-value rasterized gaming card when priced well below the RTX 5070 Ti; NVIDIA remains ahead for extreme ray tracing, path tracing and CUDA-focused workloads.
