AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.4.2 Recommended (WHQL) on May 26, 2020. It added support for Gears Tactics and Predator: Hunting Grounds, bundled fixes for several crashes and installation problems, and still had significant known display and stability issues. It is a historical Windows 10-era driver—not a current default recommendation. AMD lists it in the previous-driver archive.

What does “20.4.2 (Now WHQL)” mean?

“Radeon Software” was AMD’s graphics software suite, “Adrenalin 2020 Edition” identified that generation of the software, and “20.4.2” was the release number for the 2020 April branch’s second revision. The name does not mean the WHQL package was released in April: AMD’s archived listing gives May 26, 2020 as its date.

Contemporary coverage described the May package as the WHQL version of the existing 20.4.2 branch, rather than a substantial new feature release. Treat that as historical reporting, not an AMD-confirmed statement that the package binaries were identical. The May 25 date in some contemporary coverage refers to the driver-store revision; AMD’s archived product page lists the user-facing release date as May 26. Contemporary discussion of the WHQL re-release and driver-release coverage provide that context.

What WHQL certification does—and does not—tell you

WHQL refers to Microsoft’s Windows Hardware Quality Labs certification process. A WHQL release signature is applied to a driver package’s catalog file; certification is a signing and compatibility milestone, not a promise that every configuration or game will be trouble-free. It does not establish that the driver is the fastest option or that all reported defects have been fixed. Microsoft’s explanations of WHQL release signatures and release signing describe the process.

What did the release add?

The headline additions were support for Gears Tactics and Predator: Hunting Grounds. “Support” indicates game-specific compatibility or optimization work noted for the release; it is not evidence of a particular frame-rate increase. No specific performance gain should be assumed without benchmark results for the relevant system and game settings.

What problems did 20.4.2 fix?

The release notes grouped fixes across graphics, applications, capture features and installation. The list below reflects problems the release said it addressed; it does not mean every similar symptom on every PC was resolved.

  • Addressed Radeon RX Vega crashes or timeout detection and recovery (TDR) events when Instant Replay or Record Desktop was enabled.
  • Resolved an installation problem that could produce Error 1603 when a Visual C++ prerequisite was not detected correctly.

Which problems remained?

WHQL status did not mean a clean bill of health. The release notes still listed issues that could affect particular hardware, settings or workloads.

Display and multi-monitor risks

  • Enhanced Sync could cause black screens on some games and system configurations; AMD’s stated workaround was to disable Enhanced Sync.
  • On multi-display systems, extended Microsoft Edge video playback could lead to a system hang or crash.
  • Changing the HDMI Scaling slider could lock the frame rate to 30 FPS.
  • With HDR enabled, desktop or in-game image corruption could occur.
  • Some users could still encounter black screens or system hangs during extended gaming.

GPU-specific and feature issues

  • Radeon RX 5000-series games could stutter intermittently.
  • On RX 5700-series cards, Radeon Software and WattMan could report unusually high idle clocks even when performance and power consumption were not affected.
  • Radeon RX Vega systems could crash or experience a TDR during repeated Alt+Tab task switching.
  • DirectML Media Filters were unavailable in Radeon Software’s Media Gallery.

These are distinct from the release’s fixed-issue list: the driver addressed some black-screen and Vega failures, but did not eliminate all black-screen, hang or crash scenarios.

Which Radeon hardware was supported?

The published compatibility list covered several generations of desktop and mobile Radeon graphics, as well as processors with integrated Radeon graphics. This is a family-level summary, not a guarantee that every model in a family had identical features or support on every system. The reproduced release information includes the detailed compatibility lists.

Desktop graphics

  • Radeon RX 5700-, RX 5600- and RX 5500-series cards, Radeon VII, Radeon RX Vega and Radeon Pro Duo.
  • Radeon RX 500/500X and RX 400-series cards.
  • Radeon R9 Fury, Nano, R9 300 and R9 200; Radeon R7 300 and R7 200; and Radeon R5 300 and R5 200 families.
  • Radeon HD 8500–8900 and HD 7700–7900 families.

Mobile graphics and integrated Radeon graphics

  • Notebook/reference-driver products included RX 5500M and RX 5300M, Radeon 600 mobile products, Radeon R9/R7/R5 M-series products, and Radeon HD 8500M–8900M and HD 7700M–7900M families.
  • Supported processors with integrated graphics included desktop and mobile Ryzen and Ryzen PRO, Athlon, A-Series and FX-Series products, along with related Vega- or Radeon-equipped processors.

Important laptop and all-in-one caveat

AMD described its notebook package as a reference driver with limited support for features specific to individual system vendors. For laptops and all-in-ones, the manufacturer’s validated driver is generally the safer first choice, especially where brightness controls, hybrid graphics, display switching, sleep and resume, HDMI or USB-C video output, hotkeys or power profiles matter. A generic package can install successfully yet still leave one of those vendor features broken.

Should you install 20.4.2?

For a system in its original Windows 10-era context, this release could be worth testing if a listed fix matched a specific problem, if the newly listed game support was needed, or if a newer driver caused a regression. AMD’s archive labels the package “Recommended (WHQL),” but that historical classification does not make it the best choice for every PC today.

Situation Practical choice
Current Radeon system Prefer a current driver compatible with the GPU and operating system; 20.4.2 predates later games, Windows changes and newer hardware.
Older Windows 10 system needing a rollback Consider 20.4.2 only after verifying the specific GPU and operating-system compatibility and preserving a working driver for recovery.
Laptop or all-in-one with an available OEM driver Prefer the system manufacturer’s validated package unless there is a clear reason to use AMD’s reference driver.
A problem explicitly addressed by 20.4.2 It may be a candidate for controlled testing, with a rollback plan and checks focused on the affected application.
Need support for a Radeon generation released after this package Do not use 20.4.2; it cannot provide support for hardware introduced later.

AMD’s archive lists later releases after 20.4.2, including 20.5.1, 20.7.1, 20.7.2, 20.8.1 and 20.8.2. The package is therefore best understood today as an archival or rollback option, not a current recommendation. See AMD’s previous-driver archive.

How to install or roll back safely

Before installing an archived driver, make sure it matches the GPU or APU and the intended operating system. On a laptop or all-in-one, check the OEM package first. The release was a Windows 10-era package; do not assume it works on every present-day Windows configuration.

  1. Confirm the exact Radeon model and that it appears in the supported-product list.
  2. On a laptop or all-in-one, check the computer maker’s support page and note any vendor-specific graphics features you rely on.
  3. Create a restore point or otherwise preserve a known-working driver and recovery route.
  4. Get the installer from AMD’s official previous-driver archive, rather than treating an unverified mirror as equivalent.
  5. Close games, browsers, recording tools, monitoring utilities and overclocking software before running the installer with administrator privileges.
  6. Use the standard installation path for a routine update. Do not select Factory Reset by default; AMD cited that option as part of a workaround for a particular laptop installation problem.
  7. Reboot when prompted, then confirm the installed version in Radeon Software or Windows Device Manager.
  8. Test the application or feature that motivated the installation, then check display sleep and wake, HDR, multi-monitor use and any capture or overlay features you use.

If setup reports Error 1603

20.4.2 addressed one Error 1603 scenario involving detection of a Visual C++ prerequisite. If setup still fails, reboot and retry, check the installer log for the failing prerequisite, and make sure Windows is updated. If the previous installation is damaged, use AMD’s supported cleanup process before reinstalling. Close security or system-modification tools temporarily if they are interfering, and avoid layering a generic package over an OEM laptop package without a clear reason. These are general troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that every Error 1603 has the same cause.

If a laptop develops a BSOD or loses vendor features

If a generic driver causes a blue screen, breaks brightness control or display switching, or disrupts power management, return to the manufacturer’s validated graphics package. AMD’s release information advised laptop users facing a BSOD during installation over an OEM driver to remove that driver through Control Panel and reinstall the Radeon package using Factory Reset. That was a specific workaround, not a universal requirement.

If the display goes black

  • If Windows remains usable, disable Enhanced Sync and see whether the problem stops.
  • If the display does not recover, use Windows Recovery Environment or Safe Mode as needed and restore the previous driver.
  • Disconnect unnecessary displays and adapters while diagnosing; test whether HDR, multi-monitor operation or high refresh rates trigger the failure.
  • Do not assume the driver is the only possible cause: cables, monitor firmware, GPU firmware, power delivery, Windows updates and overclocking can produce similar symptoms.

How to test a problem without making diagnosis harder

For streamers and creators, the release’s fixes touched XSplit, Radeon recording and Instant Replay, browser hardware acceleration, overlays and monitoring. Change one variable at a time: for example, test XSplit scene switching without changing Radeon recording settings or browser acceleration at the same time.

Multi-monitor users should separately check Edge video playback, HDR, HDMI scaling, Enhanced Sync and display sleep or wake. Different refresh rates and output combinations can behave differently from a single-display setup, so a successful test on one monitor is not proof that every display configuration is stable.
