What Mario Builder 64 lets you create
The editor is built into a Super Mario 64 ROM hack, so level creation happens in the game rather than in a separate desktop editor. The project repository says it was built on the source code of SM64: Beyond the Cursed Mirror and uses HackerSM64 as its base.

Parts, themes, music and interactions
SM64Games.com’s feature overview describes a palette of over 100 parts, music selection, a theme editor and an expanded interaction system. It presents the tool as suitable for varied course designs, from speedrun-style levels to multi-star courses and experiments. The overview also mentions a Beyond the Cursed Mirror theme, badge mechanics and parts from that hack. These are feature claims from the overview, rather than details listed in the brief project README.
How you can play custom levels
The feature overview says Mario Builder 64 can read user-generated levels from an SD card. That establishes the broad loading method, but the sources reviewed do not document a specific sharing procedure or guarantee that a particular console, emulator, ROM revision or storage setup will work.

If you want to play on original Nintendo 64 hardware, an SD-capable flashcart may be one possible route because the game reads levels from an SD card. Treat that as an inference, not a confirmed setup guide: no particular cart model or compatibility has been verified. Check that a specific device supports the game and its level-loading needs before buying or configuring hardware.
Latest release shown on the official page
The official GitHub releases page lists version 1.0.0 as the latest release shown there. The release was built on May 18, 2024, and published on May 19, 2024. This describes the releases page, not every possible distribution channel.

Where developers can look for build guidance
The project repository points developers to the HackerSM64 README for compilation instructions. The available project information identifies Mario Builder 64’s technical base, but does not establish compatibility details for a particular emulator, flashcart, console setup or ROM image.
