Yes—the Ryzen 7 8700G’s Radeon 780M is unusually capable for integrated desktop graphics. It can handle many esports games and lighter titles at 1080p, and some demanding games at low settings with compromises. It is not a substitute for a mainstream graphics card: if you want 1080p High, 1440p, ray tracing, or consistently high frame rates in new AAA games, look at a discrete GPU. The 8700G makes the most sense when you specifically want a gaming-capable PC that can run without a graphics card, and the complete AM5 build is priced well.
What the Ryzen 7 8700G includes
The 8700G is an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 4 processor with a 4.2 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.1 GHz, and a 65 W default TDP. Its integrated Radeon 780M uses RDNA 3, has 12 compute units, and reaches up to 2.9 GHz. It is part of the processor, not a separate graphics card, and uses system memory rather than dedicated VRAM. AMD lists DirectX 12 support, DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 support, and AV1 decode and encode. Check the motherboard or prebuilt’s actual display outputs and supported refresh rates before buying; the processor’s capabilities do not guarantee that a particular system exposes every output.
The chip uses the AM5 socket and supports PCIe 4.0. AMD specifies DDR5 memory up to DDR5-5200, depending on module configuration. See AMD’s Ryzen 7 8700G specifications.
How fast is the Radeon 780M in games?
Independent testing by TechSpot shows why the 780M is impressive for an iGPU—and why one headline FPS number cannot describe every game. These are averages from that review’s test system at 1080p Low, not guaranteed results for every build. The cited figures do not establish a universal upscaling or frame-generation configuration.

| Game | Reported result | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Fortnite | 132 fps average | Competitive and lighter games can make good use of the 780M, though settings and match conditions matter. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | 49 fps average | Playable in this test at reduced settings, but demanding scenes may feel less smooth. |
| Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty | 41 fps average; 30 fps 1% low | A demanding open-world game can run, but the low figure signals uneven moments. |
| Spider-Man Remastered | 68 fps average | A promising average at Low does not mean the same rate in every scene. |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III | 74 fps average | A demanding mainstream game can be playable at reduced settings in the review setup. |
In practice, esports, indie games, older releases, strategy and simulation titles are the safest fit. Some modern AAA games are playable at 720p or 1080p Low, sometimes with upscaling or a roughly 30-fps target. New AAA games at High or Ultra, ray tracing, and 1440p high-refresh gaming are poor targets. Results vary with memory speed and configuration, drivers, game updates, cooling, and power limits. TechSpot’s full Ryzen 7 8700G test results provide the benchmark context.
What settings should you use?
- Start at 1920×1080 with Low settings. Check performance in the game you actually play rather than assuming a processor label guarantees a preset or frame rate.
- Lower resolution or resolution scale if needed. Try 1280×720 or an in-game resolution scale when frame rates drop or fluctuate.
- Enable FSR when the game supports it. For games without a suitable in-game option, Radeon Super Resolution may be useful where supported. These features are game- and driver-dependent, not guaranteed performance multipliers.
- Turn off ray tracing. Reduce shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, foliage, and crowd density before sacrificing everything else.
- Keep frame generation in perspective. AMD Fluid Motion Frames may improve perceived smoothness in supported configurations, but generated frames do not replace adequate base-frame performance or fix input latency.
- Cap the frame rate if consistency matters. A stable target can feel better than a frame rate that swings sharply, particularly in demanding scenes.
AMD describes features including HYPR-RX, Radeon Super Resolution, and Fluid Motion Frames for the 8000G series; availability and behavior depend on the game, driver, and configuration. See AMD’s Ryzen 8000G series overview.

Why RAM is part of the graphics solution
The Radeon 780M shares system memory, so bandwidth matters directly to graphics performance. Use two matched DIMMs rather than one stick: a single-DIMM setup can restrict bandwidth and undermine gaming performance. A practical target is 32 GB as a 2×16 GB kit, with DDR5-6000 or DDR5-6400 and AMD EXPO if the motherboard and processor’s memory controller run that configuration stably. Those are enthusiast configuration targets, not AMD’s official guarantee; AMD’s published specification is up to DDR5-5200, depending on module configuration.
In TechSpot’s test system, official DDR5-5200 produced about 15% lower performance in Fortnite and 22% lower in Spider-Man Remastered than the faster memory configuration tested. Those are results for those games and that test setup, not a universal penalty for every DDR5-5200 build. Faster memory did not help every game equally, so DDR5-7200 is not a requirement.

- Confirm both DIMMs are detected and operating in dual-channel mode.
- Enable EXPO in the BIOS to apply the kit’s rated profile, then check the actual memory speed.
- If the system is unstable, try DDR5-6000 or a lower setting before troubleshooting the graphics driver.
- Update the motherboard BIOS if memory training or stability is poor. Reserve a reasonable amount of system memory for the iGPU if the BIOS offers that setting; the exact option and available choices vary by motherboard.
Where the 8700G falls short
It cannot match a discrete GPU
The 780M has no dedicated VRAM and shares system memory bandwidth with the CPU. That makes it a useful built-in graphics solution, not a performance equivalent to a mainstream graphics card. Demanding games often require Low settings, a lower resolution, upscaling, or a lower frame-rate target. Ray tracing and 1440p or 4K gaming are not sensible reasons to choose this APU.
It is not the ideal base for a high-end GPU upgrade
The 8700G’s PCIe connectivity is PCIe 4.0, with up to eight lanes for the primary graphics slot according to TechSpot’s review. That is generally adequate for the iGPU or a modest future graphics card, but less attractive for a high-end GPU plan than a conventional Ryzen desktop processor with stronger expansion characteristics. The iGPU does not benefit from a graphics-card slot, but a later discrete GPU does.

Compact-case performance depends on the system
The 65 W default TDP does not guarantee the same sustained performance in every small-form-factor PC. Cooling, case airflow, BIOS power limits, and ambient temperature affect sustained operation. A compact prebuilt may also use different memory settings or cooling from a review test system.
The full platform price can erase the appeal
The processor avoids an immediate graphics-card purchase, but it still needs an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. Compare the total build cost—not just the CPU price—with an 8600G build and with a conventional CPU plus entry-level discrete GPU. Tom’s Hardware likewise notes that motherboard and DDR5 costs, and CPU-plus-GPU alternatives, can weaken the 8700G’s value: Tom’s Hardware’s Ryzen 7 8700G review.

How it compares with the alternatives
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 8700G | A PC that must game without a graphics card, especially with an eight-core CPU workload as well. | AM5 and DDR5 platform cost; limited graphics headroom and reduced PCIe connectivity versus conventional desktop Ryzen CPUs. |
| Ryzen 5 8600G | Integrated gaming and everyday use when six cores are enough. | Six cores and Radeon 760M graphics with eight compute units, versus the 8700G’s eight cores and 12-CU Radeon 780M. |
| Ryzen 7 7700 plus discrete GPU | A system expected to use a graphics card, especially with a more ambitious upgrade path. | The 7700’s integrated graphics are much weaker; a discrete GPU adds cost but provides substantially more graphics capability. |
| Older Ryzen 5000G system | A low-cost AM4 build that can reuse an existing motherboard and DDR4 memory. | The 5700G and 5600G’s Vega graphics are substantially weaker than the 780M. |
| Lower-cost CPU plus entry-level GPU | Buyers prioritizing gaming performance over a graphics-card-free or compact build. | Requires a separate card and a suitable case, power supply, and budget; total cost depends on the parts chosen. |
AMD’s launch pricing was $329 for the 8700G and $229 for the 8600G; these are launch MSRPs, not current street prices. TechSpot found the 8700G’s CPU performance broadly comparable to the Ryzen 7 7700 in some multi-core workloads, while the 7700 has more cache and stronger PCIe connectivity. A CPU-plus-GPU combination can outperform the 8700G in some games and GPU-accelerated applications, so price the complete systems for your region and date rather than comparing processor prices alone.
Who should buy the Ryzen 7 8700G?
- Good fit: You need a working PC without a discrete GPU and play esports, indie, older AAA, strategy, simulation, or emulated games.
- Good fit: You value a compact, quiet system, and your gaming expectations are mainly 720p or 1080p at reduced settings.
- Possible fit: You need a PC now and might add a modest graphics card later, but do not treat the 8700G as an ideal foundation for a high-end GPU upgrade.
- Compare first: You need eight CPU cores but expect to install a GPU soon; a conventional Ryzen CPU may suit that plan better.
- Compare first: Six CPU cores are enough. The 8600G may meet the need at a lower launch MSRP, though current pricing should be checked.
- Wrong fit: You want 1440p or 4K, ray tracing, high-refresh AAA gaming, or 1080p High/Ultra performance as a general expectation.
Driver support and setup
AMD’s support page, checked August 18, 2026, lists Adrenalin Edition 26.7.1 WHQL Recommended, released July 28, 2026. Use the Ryzen 7 8700G support page for the appropriate driver and any available auto-detect utility. OEM desktops may require customized drivers from the system manufacturer. If gaming performance is unexpectedly poor, verify dual-channel memory and its speed first, then check the driver, BIOS, and cooling.
