At the same time, Newegg listed three bundles combining the processor with an AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory and, in some cases, a cooler. Those bundles ranged from $628.99 to $829.99.
The CPU-only deal was most compelling for people who already owned a suitable AM5 system. Buyers upgrading from AM4 or Intel needed to account for the full platform cost: an AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory and a cooler. Before buying, check the current retailer price, seller, warranty, return policy and the exact components included.

How much did the bundles add to the CPU price?
Using the historical $429.99 CPU price as a baseline, the non-CPU portion of each bundle represented approximately:
- $199.00 for the $628.99 motherboard-and-cooler bundle.
- $249.00 for the $678.99 motherboard, 32GB memory and cooler bundle.
- $400.00 for the $829.99 X870E, memory and cooler bundle.
These figures are bundle premiums, not savings. They do not establish that the included parts were worth exactly those amounts. To judge value, compare each motherboard, memory kit and cooler with the parts you would otherwise purchase separately.
A bundle can be cheaper than buying equivalent components individually, but a low sticker price is not automatically a good deal. A less expensive board may have fewer expansion slots, weaker connectivity or different firmware features. Likewise, advertised DDR5 speeds may require AMD EXPO and stability testing rather than working at the rated speed with one click on every system.
Why the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is aimed at gamers
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is an AM5 desktop processor based on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture. According to AMD’s specifications, it has:
Rank #3
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Ready for Advanced AI PC: Designed for the future of AI computing, with the power and connectivity needed for demanding AI applications
- AMD AM5 Socket: Ready for AMD Socket AM5 for AMD Ryzen 9000 & 8000 & 7000 Series Desktop Processors
- 8 cores and 16 threads
- A 4.7GHz base clock
- Maximum boost clocks of up to 5.2GHz
- 96MB of L3 cache
- A 120W default TDP
- DDR5 memory support
- PCIe 5.0 support
- An unlocked design for overclocking
Its large cache is intended to reduce the need to retrieve some game data from slower system memory. That can help frame rates and, particularly, CPU-limited performance in games that respond well to additional cache. It does not make every game faster by the same amount.
Tom’s Hardware reported that the 9800X3D topped its 13-game average at 1920×1080. That is a useful performance context, not a permanent universal ranking. Results vary with the game, graphics card, memory settings, BIOS, operating system, resolution and test methodology. “World’s fastest gaming CPU” should therefore be understood as an attributed claim about that testing context.
The advantage is most visible in high-refresh gaming, esports titles, lower resolutions and other situations where the processor is limiting frame rates. At 4K, the graphics card is more often the bottleneck, so changing from an already capable CPU may produce a smaller visible improvement.
Compatibility: the 9800X3D is an AM5 upgrade
The processor uses the AM5 socket and DDR5 memory. AMD lists support for A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870 and X870E chipsets. Compatibility does not guarantee that an older board will boot immediately, however. The motherboard manufacturer’s CPU-support list and BIOS requirements take precedence for a specific model.
Rank #4
- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Gaming and Content Creation Processor
- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
Existing AM5 owners
An AM5 owner may need only a BIOS update, the processor and possibly a different cooler. Check the board’s supported BIOS version before removing the old CPU. If the board has BIOS Flashback or another CPU-less update method, updating is easier if the existing processor cannot boot with the new chip.
AM4 owners
The 9800X3D cannot be installed in an AM4 motherboard. An AM4 owner needs an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory in addition to the CPU. This is why a CPU-only price can understate the actual upgrade cost.
Intel owners
Intel users also need to change platform components. Compare the complete cost of the motherboard, memory and cooler rather than assuming an AMD bundle is automatically cheaper or faster for every workload.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not overlook the cooler
The 9800X3D does not include a boxed thermal solution. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. The Montech NX400 ARGB included in the historical Newegg bundles was a separate bundled accessory, not a cooler supplied by AMD.
Best Value
- AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Desktop Processor
Whether that cooler is suitable depends on the case, airflow, noise target, sustained workload and power settings. Before using any bundled cooler, confirm AM5 mounting hardware, cooler height, fan clearance and—if applicable—radiator support in the case. An existing liquid cooler may be reusable, but verify that its AM5 mounting kit is included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.CPU-only purchase or bundle?
Choose CPU-only when:
- You already have a compatible AM5 motherboard with confirmed BIOS support.
- Your DDR5 kit is suitable and stable for the new system.
- Your current cooler has AM5 hardware and is appropriate for the processor.
- Your case, power supply and graphics card are already adequate.
- You want to select a particular motherboard, memory kit or cooler.
Consider a bundle when:
- You are building a new AM5 gaming PC.
- You are moving from AM4 or Intel.
- You need the motherboard, memory and cooler anyway.
- The included parts match your expansion, connectivity and size requirements.
- The bundle’s current price beats a comparable self-selected parts list.
For a new build, compare like for like. Account for motherboard size, M.2 slots, USB connectivity, networking, memory capacity, EXPO support, cooler compatibility and warranty—not just the number of components in the box.
Who should skip the 9800X3D?
The processor is not the right upgrade for everyone.
- 4K gamers with a midrange GPU: A faster graphics card may improve the experience more than a flagship gaming CPU.
- 60Hz gamers: The premium is harder to justify if the current processor already meets the monitor’s refresh-rate target.
- GPU-limited systems: If your graphics card is consistently at full utilization, a CPU change may have little practical effect.
- Productivity-heavy users: Eight cores and 16 threads are strong for gaming, but rendering, compilation and other sustained multithreaded workloads may favor a higher-core-count processor.
- Owners of a satisfactory recent CPU: Waiting for a verified current promotion or upgrading another component may be the better use of the budget.
- Small-form-factor builders: Check motherboard dimensions, cooler height, radiator clearance and airflow before choosing a bundle.
Buying checklist for a current listing
- Confirm the date and price. Treat $429.99 and the three Newegg prices as September 23, 2025 historical figures unless the retailer shows the same price now.
- Check the seller. On Amazon, verify whether the CPU is sold and shipped by Amazon or by a marketplace seller. Confirm that it is new, boxed and covered by an acceptable return policy.
- Inspect the exact bundle. Record the motherboard model, memory capacity and kit, cooler model and current checkout price.
- Verify BIOS support. Check the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU list and whether BIOS Flashback is available.
- Confirm cooling. Check AM5 mounting hardware, case clearance and whether the cooling solution matches your noise and workload expectations.
- Check memory settings. Confirm DDR5 compatibility, EXPO support and—where possible—the motherboard’s memory QVL. Do not assume a high advertised speed is guaranteed on every CPU and board combination.
- Budget the whole system. Include tax, shipping, operating-system costs if applicable, and any required replacement hardware.
- Balance the GPU. A 9800X3D makes more sense when high-refresh or CPU-limited gaming is the goal than when the graphics card is the clear limit.
Verdict
The $429.99 Amazon price was a strong historical deal for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but it belongs to September 23, 2025 and should not be treated as a live September 2026 offer without verification. Existing AM5 owners were the clearest CPU-only buyers. New builders and AM4 or Intel upgraders could benefit from a bundle, provided the motherboard, memory and cooler were parts they would genuinely choose on their own.
The 9800X3D remains a high-end gaming-focused chip, especially attractive for high-refresh, CPU-limited play. But at 4K with a midrange graphics card, a GPU upgrade—or simply keeping a current CPU that already meets the target frame rate—may deliver more noticeable value.
