The Fortnite “Unable to Connect to Server” message does not identify one specific fault. It can mean an Epic outage, a PlayStation Network, Xbox, or Nintendo service problem, a failed login or matchmaking component, or a local issue with your device, router, NAT, DNS, firewall, or game installation.
Check Epic’s public status page first, followed by your platform’s service-status page. If the relevant services are operational, work through the low-risk fixes below before changing DNS, forwarding ports, or reinstalling Fortnite.

Status snapshot: Epic listed Fortnite components as operational on August 18, 2026. That result is time-sensitive and does not guarantee that services are operational when you read this.
What the error means
Fortnite may be unable to complete a connection to Epic account authentication, game services, matchmaking, parties, voice chat, player-data services, or your console platform’s online service. The wording can vary by platform, region, game mode, and where the failure occurs.
#1 Best Overall

That is why browsing the web or watching videos successfully does not prove that Fortnite can connect. Web traffic may work while game-service DNS, NAT, firewall rules, ISP routing, platform services, or a specific Fortnite component is failing.
Check whether Fortnite is down
- Open Epic Games Public Status.
- Check the relevant platform: PlayStation Network, Xbox status, or Nintendo Network status.
- Look specifically at login, game services, matchmaking, parties, and voice chat—not only the general Fortnite heading.
Operational means no known broad incident, but regional or account-specific failures can still occur. Degraded performance means some users or functions may fail intermittently. Partial outage usually affects a component, while a major outage is broader. Maintenance indicates planned or active service work.
If Epic reports an incident, stop local troubleshooting and wait for the service to recover. A reinstall, DNS change, or new router cannot repair a server-side outage. Official Epic updates are more reliable than third-party outage reports, which are useful only as supplementary signals.

Quick fixes for every platform
- Close Fortnite completely. Do not leave it suspended in rest mode or Quick Resume.
- Restart your PC or console.
- Restart the network equipment. Turn off the modem and router. Leave them off for several minutes; PlayStation’s published guidance recommends at least five minutes. If they are separate, restart the modem first, wait for its connection lights to stabilize, then restart the router.
- Run the device’s built-in internet test. A successful test does not guarantee that Fortnite is reachable, but a failed test points to the local network or platform.
- Install pending updates for Fortnite, the Epic Games Launcher, Windows, or the console system software.
- Test Ethernet if possible. A wired connection helps distinguish Wi-Fi interference or instability from other problems.
- Try another network, such as a mobile hotspot, only as a diagnostic comparison.
Use the symptom to choose the right fix
| What happens | Likely area | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Fortnite fails for many players | Epic or platform outage | Check official status pages and wait |
| You cannot reach the lobby | Login, authentication, launcher, or service problem | Restart the client, sign in again, and check Epic status |
| The lobby loads but matchmaking fails | Matchmaking, NAT, region, or a temporary service issue | Check matchmaking status and NAT; test another network |
| Solo play works but parties do not | Parties, lobbies, account permissions, or platform social services | Check component status and platform account settings |
| Matches work but voice chat does not | Voice service, permissions, headset, or platform settings | Check voice status and communication permissions |
| Fortnite works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi | Router, ISP route, DNS, NAT, or filtering | Investigate the home network rather than reinstalling |
| Other online games also fail | Router, ISP, or platform connection | Run the network test and contact the ISP or platform |
Fix Fortnite on PC
- Exit Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Reopen the launcher, sign out, and sign back in.
- Restart Windows and install pending Windows, Fortnite, launcher, and network-driver updates.
- In the Epic Games Launcher, open your Fortnite library, use the game’s options menu, and choose Verify to check and repair local files.
- Temporarily disconnect VPNs and proxies. Also test without traffic filters or unusual DNS software.
- Make sure Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher are allowed through Windows Firewall and any third-party security software. If you disable protection for a test, re-enable it immediately afterward.
- Try Ethernet or another network.
If the error occurs before the lobby, focus on authentication, the launcher, Epic Online Services, firewall rules, and account sign-in. If the lobby opens but matchmaking fails, focus on matchmaking status, NAT, region, and network routing. If every online game fails, troubleshoot Windows networking, the router, or the ISP instead of Fortnite alone.
Fix it on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5
- Check PlayStation Network status and Epic status.
- Close Fortnite fully and restart the console.
- Run the console’s internet connection test.
- Restart the modem and router, using the five-minute power-off interval recommended in PlayStation’s connection guidance.
- Install Fortnite and system updates.
- Review NAT type if matchmaking or party joining fails, but do not treat one NAT label as a guarantee. Menu names differ between PS4 and PS5.
- Test Ethernet if available.
PlayStation documents temporary congestion and server-connection failures as reasons to check service status, restart network equipment, and try again later. If PSN or Fortnite reports an incident, waiting is more appropriate than reinstalling.
Fix it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
- Check Xbox service status.
- Quit Fortnite rather than leaving a broken session suspended in Quick Resume, then relaunch it.
- Restart the Xbox and modem/router.
- Open Settings → General → Network settings and run the available connection and multiplayer tests.
- Review NAT status and multiplayer connectivity.
- Install Fortnite and console updates.
- Test Ethernet and temporarily remove VPN, filtering, or unusual DNS configurations.
Xbox guidance commonly separates an Xbox-service outage from a local connection problem and recommends network testing and checking NAT. NAT can identify a restriction, but “Open” NAT does not guarantee that every Fortnite service is working.

Fix it on Nintendo Switch
- Check Nintendo Network status and Epic status.
- Close Fortnite and restart the Switch.
- Restart the router.
- Use System Settings → Internet → Test Connection.
- Move closer to the router and reduce wireless interference.
- Update Fortnite and Switch system software.
- Test another network, or use a supported wired adapter and dock connection where practical.
Nintendo support materials identify maintenance, wireless interference, and manually configured network settings as possible causes of connection failures. Exact options can vary with current Switch software and network configuration, so do not assume that instructions written for another Nintendo system apply directly.
Advanced troubleshooting
DNS
Leave DNS on automatic at first. Consider testing a reputable public DNS provider only when the device appears unable to resolve Epic or Fortnite service addresses, or the ISP’s DNS seems unreliable. Record the original settings, change DNS on the device or the router—not both—and restore automatic DNS if there is no improvement.
DNS can help name resolution. It cannot restore a Fortnite outage, repair damaged files, fix an account restriction, or remove a NAT block. It also should not be presented as a guaranteed way to lower ping.

VPNs, proxies, and firewalls
Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily for diagnosis. It can change routing, latency, apparent region, and authentication behavior. Check firewall permissions rather than permanently disabling security protection.
NAT, double NAT, and CGNAT
Restricted NAT, two routers operating as separate NAT devices, or carrier-grade NAT from the ISP can interfere with matchmaking and parties even when ordinary internet access works. Check the console’s multiplayer or NAT diagnostics. If the problem affects multiple games, ask the ISP whether CGNAT or a router-mode change is involved.

Do not begin by copying a universal “Fortnite ports” list. Requirements vary by platform, router, and service, and incorrect forwarding can create security or connectivity problems. UPnP, router firmware, double NAT, and ISP restrictions may matter more. Use current official Epic and platform documentation before changing router rules; port lists for other games are not Fortnite requirements.

When reinstalling Fortnite is worth it
Reinstall only near the end. It is reasonable when verification fails, files are reported as corrupted, an update was incomplete, or the issue affects only one device and persists after service and network checks.
Reinstallation is unlikely to help when Epic or a platform is down, another device on the same network has the same failure, only matchmaking or parties fail, or Fortnite works on a hotspot but not home broadband. It consumes time and bandwidth without changing server, account, router, or ISP conditions.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop repeating local fixes when Epic reports an incident, the same failure occurs across multiple devices and networks, the platform service is unavailable, or a clean network comparison and verified installation produce no change. At that point, wait for recovery or contact official support.
