AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Review: Overclocking Results and Verdict – Page 6

By VGSources Team 9 min read

HotHardware’s sixth and final page concluded that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D was an exceptional gaming processor. In its November 6, 2024 review, the chip led the publication’s gaming tests, delivered manageable power and temperatures, and earned an Editor’s Choice award. Overclocking, however, produced only modest gains, while Ryzen Master caused a reboot hang on the publication’s test system.

That was a strong launch-period verdict. In 2026, the 9800X3D remains a capable AM5 gaming CPU, but it is no longer AMD’s newest eight-core X3D model. The newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D has a higher listed boost clock, so the 9800X3D’s value now depends heavily on its street price and the rest of the system.

HotHardware’s original verdict

HotHardware viewed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as an excellent gaming CPU. It led the publication’s game testing and combined that performance with reasonable power use and thermals. The processor received an Editor’s Choice award.

The review was less enthusiastic about value outside gaming. At the time, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D carried a $479 launch-period price, while the 12-core Ryzen 9 9900X was described as roughly $100 less and better suited to heavily multithreaded work. HotHardware’s conclusion was therefore fundamentally gaming-focused: the 9800X3D was an outstanding choice when maximum gaming performance mattered more than rendering, encoding, or other workloads that scale across additional cores.

Its “ideal CPU for PC gamers” characterization should be understood as a 2024 review conclusion, not an unconditional buying recommendation for every system in 2026.

Why the 9800X3D is strong in games

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D uses AMD’s Zen 5 architecture and 3D V-Cache. Its large cache can keep more game data close to the CPU cores, reducing trips to comparatively slower system memory. That can help games whose performance is limited by CPU latency, simulation work, or the amount of data being processed.

The benefit is not identical in every title. It is most relevant in CPU-limited situations such as:

  • Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
  • Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
  • High-refresh-rate 1080p or 1440p gaming.
  • Esports titles where the graphics card is not the limiting component.
  • Simulation-heavy strategy and management games.
  • Open-world games with demanding world, NPC, or streaming workloads.
  • Games where frame-time consistency and 1% lows matter as much as average FPS.

At 4K, particularly with demanding visual settings, the graphics card is more likely to become the bottleneck and CPU differences can narrow. A 9800X3D cannot compensate for an undersized GPU, and 3D V-Cache does not guarantee higher frame rates in every game engine.

What the overclocking tests found

The 9800X3D was notable in HotHardware’s testing context because AMD provided full overclocking-related controls for this X3D processor. In practice, the software experience was not entirely smooth.

Ryzen Master caused a reboot hang

HotHardware reported that manual changes made through Ryzen Master caused the test system to hang during reboot with POST code 15, which the publication described as a memory-related issue. This was a result on HotHardware’s test system, not evidence that every Ryzen 7 9800X3D has the same defect.

The reviewer moved most tuning work into the motherboard BIOS and experimented with AutoOC, Precision Boost Overdrive, and memory-clock adjustments. HotHardware expected future BIOS and software updates to improve the experience.

Performance gains were small

The tuned configuration produced only modest improvements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Small gains in Cinebench.
  • Approximately one second shaved from HotHardware’s custom LAME MT encoding test.
  • Temperatures generally in the high-70s Celsius, with peaks in the low-80s Celsius during the tested tuning.
  • Little change in total system power.

These measurements apply to HotHardware’s processor, motherboard, cooling, memory, BIOS, and workload configuration. They are not guaranteed results for every chip or system. A different motherboard, memory kit, ambient temperature, or cooler can produce different behavior.

Is manual overclocking worth it?

For most gaming-focused owners, the answer is not as a first priority. AMD’s automatic boost behavior already attempts to maximize performance within the processor’s power, temperature, and current limits. The small gains reported by HotHardware make stability and convenience more valuable than chasing a minor benchmark improvement.

These controls serve different purposes:

Setting What it does Practical approach
EXPO Loads a tested memory profile, increasing memory speed and changing timings. Enable only after confirming memory stability.
Precision Boost Overdrive Lets the CPU manage boost behavior using expanded platform limits. Useful for automatic tuning, but test temperatures and stability.
Curve Optimizer Applies voltage/frequency curve offsets. Often better viewed as efficiency tuning than a conventional all-core overclock.
Manual multiplier or voltage tuning Directly changes operating targets. More invasive and less attractive when gaming gains are small.

Do not assume that a higher Cinebench score will improve game frame times. After any change, test the games and applications you actually use, along with memory stability. An unstable EXPO or Curve Optimizer setting can cause crashes, failed memory training, or a system that will not POST.

If a setting prevents booting, restore the previous BIOS profile if possible. Otherwise, clear the CMOS according to the motherboard manual or use BIOS Flashback when the board supports it. Ryzen Master is optional; it is not required to operate the processor at stock settings.

Cooling and platform requirements

The 9800X3D requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. It does not include a cooler. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance, although a capable AM5-compatible tower air cooler can be sufficient in many systems depending on case airflow, fan curves, ambient temperature, motherboard limits, and workload. AMD lists a 95°C maximum operating temperature. See the official specifications before choosing the cooling solution.

Supported chipset families include A620, B650/B650E, X670/X670E, B840, B850, X870, and X870E, subject to model-specific BIOS support. Chipset branding alone is not enough: check the exact motherboard’s CPU support list. For example, motherboard manufacturers publish their own compatibility databases, such as ASRock’s AM5 CPU support list.

Older AM5 boards may need a BIOS update before they recognize the processor. A board with BIOS Flashback is useful when upgrading without an already-supported CPU. An AM4 system cannot reuse its DDR4 memory in an AM5 build, so the total platform cost includes the motherboard, DDR5, and cooler.

The processor’s integrated Radeon graphics are suitable for basic display output and troubleshooting, but they are not a substitute for the discrete GPU used in a gaming build.

Does the 9800X3D still make sense in 2026?

AMD now lists the Ryzen 7 9850X3D above the 9800X3D in its desktop lineup. Both are eight-core, 16-thread AM5 processors with a 120W rating and 104MB of total cache, but AMD lists the 9850X3D with a maximum boost clock of up to 5.6 GHz compared with up to 5.2 GHz for the 9800X3D. The specification difference supports treating the 9850X3D as the newer, higher-clocked option, but it does not establish a fixed gaming-performance percentage without independent comparative testing. Check AMD’s current Ryzen desktop lineup for the latest specifications.

The 9800X3D is attractive when it is meaningfully cheaper. The original $479 price is historical. An AMD U.S. store listing observed during research showed a $459 “now” price against a $479 MSRP, while the dedicated product page was out of stock; these dynamic store signals should not be treated as a guaranteed nationwide street price. Check availability before buying.

Ryzen 7 9850X3D

Choose the 9850X3D when the price premium is small and the goal is the fastest current eight-core X3D option. Choose the 9800X3D when its discount is large enough to improve value for the games you play.

Ryzen 7 9700X

The 9700X is an eight-core, 16-thread non-X3D processor with up to a 5.5 GHz boost clock, a 65W default TDP, and 40MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. It can be a better fit for mixed-use systems, lower-power builds, and buyers who do not need maximum CPU-limited gaming performance. The 9800X3D is the clearer choice when high-refresh-rate gaming is the primary goal and pricing is close.

Ryzen 9 9900X

The 9900X provides 12 cores and 24 threads at a 120W rating. It is the more sensible choice for substantial rendering, encoding, compiling, virtualization, and other multithreaded workloads. The 9800X3D remains preferable when gaming dominates and the additional cores will rarely be used.

Ryzen 7 7800X3D

A discounted 7800X3D may interest an existing AM5 buyer, especially if the price gap is substantial. Its value depends on current pricing and independent comparisons, so the fact that the 9800X3D launched at the same $479 price as the 7800X3D does not by itself establish which is the better 2026 purchase.

Intel alternatives

HotHardware included competing Intel processors in its 2024 benchmark suite, but those launch-era rankings should not be presented as a universal 2026 hierarchy. Current prices, BIOS behavior, software updates, and game performance must be evaluated separately.

Who should buy the Ryzen 7 9800X3D?

Buy it when:

  • Gaming is the primary workload.
  • You have a fast discrete GPU and target high-refresh-rate 1080p or 1440p gaming.
  • Your games are CPU-limited, simulation-heavy, or sensitive to cache and latency.
  • The 9800X3D is substantially cheaper than the 9850X3D.
  • You already own a compatible AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory.
  • Eight cores are sufficient for gaming, streaming, and ordinary desktop work.
  • You want an AM5 system with an upgrade path; AMD has announced platform support through 2029.

Choose another processor when:

  • Your work is predominantly rendering, encoding, compiling, or virtualization.
  • Your system is GPU-limited at the resolution and settings you use.
  • The 9850X3D costs only slightly more.
  • You need the lowest possible total platform cost.
  • You already own a strong AM4 X3D system that meets your needs.
  • You need more than eight cores for professional workloads.
  • Your case cannot accommodate capable cooling.

AM5 build checklist

  1. Verify CPU support: Check the exact motherboard model’s support list and required BIOS version.
  2. Plan for DDR5: AM4 DDR4 memory cannot be carried over. EXPO is optional and should be stability-tested.
  3. Choose adequate cooling: The cooler is sold separately. Follow AMD’s liquid-cooling recommendation for optimal performance, or select a quality AM5-compatible air cooler where appropriate.
  4. Balance the GPU and display: The 9800X3D makes most sense when the graphics card and target refresh rate can expose CPU differences.
  5. Update carefully: Use a stable BIOS before tuning. BIOS Flashback is helpful for boards that support it.
  6. Test before tuning: Establish stock stability first, then change one setting at a time.
  7. Have a recovery plan: Know how to clear CMOS and restore BIOS settings before experimenting with EXPO, PBO, or Curve Optimizer.

Final verdict

HotHardware’s 2024 conclusion was justified: the Ryzen 7 9800X3D was a landmark gaming CPU, delivered class-leading results in its test suite, ran with manageable power and thermals, and deserved an Editor’s Choice award. Its overclocking controls were interesting, but the reported gains were small and Ryzen Master was troublesome on the publication’s system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In 2026, the 9800X3D is still an excellent gaming processor—especially at a meaningful discount—but it is not automatically the ideal CPU for every new PC. Compare its real price with the newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D, account for the cost of AM5, DDR5, and cooling, and choose a higher-core-count Ryzen 9 model if productivity is equally important. For a gaming-first build, the 9800X3D remains a strong buy when the pricing is right.
