Its initial consumer rollout targeted Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards, but later AMD developer materials documented FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 support on RX 7000-series GPUs. The current answer is therefore feature-specific: the original RX 9000 restriction was real, but it does not prove that every Redstone technology remains permanently exclusive to that generation.
What AMD announced
AMD teased the Redstone premiere on November 18, 2025, after introducing machine-learning-based FidelityFX Super Resolution features at Computex 2025. The announced premiere date was December 10, 2025—not December 10, 2026.

The date ultimately marked a software launch. AMD added FSR “Redstone” support in Adrenalin Edition 25.12.1, alongside support for compatible games and Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards.
“Redstone” is best understood as an umbrella technology family or release name. It is not AMD’s confirmed official name for “FSR 5.” The family includes existing FSR technologies and newer neural-rendering features such as machine-learning upscaling, frame generation, ray regeneration, denoising, and radiance caching.

Why RX 9000 was exclusive at launch
AMD designed its first ML-based FSR upscaling implementation around RDNA 4 hardware. AMD specifically highlighted RDNA 4’s hardware-accelerated FP8 WMMA capabilities for the workloads used by FSR 4.
That hardware and software design decision made the initial consumer implementation an RX 9000-series feature, particularly relevant to cards such as the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. Owners of older Radeon cards could still use earlier FSR versions and conventional frame-generation options, but the launch Redstone path was not presented as a universal feature for every AMD GPU.
This explains the original “RX 9000 exclusive” wording without proving that all future Redstone features must remain locked to RX 9000. Hardware requirements can differ between upscaling, frame generation, and ray-tracing technologies.

Adrenalin 25.12.1 added Redstone support for compatible RX 9000-series systems. The driver supported Windows 10 64-bit version 21H2 or later and Windows 11 version 21H2 or later, subject to the limitations listed in AMD’s release notes.
Installing the driver did not add Redstone automatically to every game. AMD’s supported-games list documents the required game integrations and can change as developers release patches and AMD updates its software.
Redstone’s main technologies
ML-based upscaling
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. The game renders fewer pixels, then the upscaler uses spatial, temporal, or machine-learning information to produce the displayed image.
FSR 4 and later FSR Upscaling versions should not be treated as interchangeable with older spatial or temporal FSR implementations. Image quality varies by game, resolution, mode, motion, and developer integration. Possible problems include shimmer, ghosting, unstable fine detail, and reconstruction artifacts.
ML frame generation
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between conventionally rendered frames. That can raise the reported or displayed frame rate, but it does not provide the same latency benefit as rendering more real frames. It can also produce visual artifacts, especially when the underlying frame rate is low or the scene contains difficult motion.
AMD’s documented compatibility path requires a game integration based on FSR 3.1.4 for ML frame generation. Upscaling and frame generation are separate features, so a game can support one without supporting the other.
Ray Regeneration
Ray Regeneration uses neural techniques to improve reconstruction in ray-traced scenes or reduce the cost of ray-traced lighting. Its value depends heavily on the game’s ray-tracing implementation, the selected settings, and developer integration. It is not a general image-quality switch that produces the same result in every title.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
Radiance Caching
AMD introduced Radiance Caching as a technical preview for developers. It is intended to approximate indirect-lighting information and reduce ray-sampling demands in path-traced scenes. It should not be confused with a broadly available consumer toggle that launched in every Redstone-supported game.
How game compatibility works
For the documented consumer Redstone path, AMD lists these practical requirements:
- AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.12.1 or newer.
- A compatible Radeon RX 9000-series card for the original consumer support path.
- A game with proper FSR 3.1 integration for ML upscaling.
- FSR 3.1.4 integration for ML frame generation.
- DirectX 12 in the documented support path.
AMD’s live list includes titles such as A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, ARC Raiders, Mafia: The Old Country, Marvel Rivals, and SMITE 2, among others. That is not an exhaustive or permanent list; check AMD’s page and the game’s own graphics settings for current support.
A driver-level upgrade can help only when the game exposes the necessary FSR hooks. A driver update cannot turn an unrelated rendering path into a fully integrated Redstone implementation.

AMD’s later FSR SDK 2.3 materials documented FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 on Radeon RX 7000-series GPUs. That is an important expansion, but it should be read narrowly.

RX 7000 support for a particular upscaling version does not automatically mean that every Redstone component works on RX 7000. Frame generation, ray regeneration, model formats, driver support, and game integration can have different requirements. Developer SDK availability also does not guarantee that a feature is exposed in a consumer driver or enabled in a particular game.
The accurate current formulation is: Redstone’s initial consumer features launched as RX 9000-focused, while later SDK work expanded at least some ML upscaling capability to RX 7000.
How to try Redstone
- Identify your GPU in AMD Software or Windows Device Manager.
- Install Adrenalin 25.12.1 or a newer compatible driver.
- Update the game.
- Check AMD’s supported-games page and the game’s graphics settings.
- Enable the supported FSR upscaling or frame-generation option in-game, or use AMD’s upgrade control where that path is available.
- Compare native rendering, FSR quality modes, and frame generation on and off.
- For demanding ray-traced games, compare ray tracing or path tracing with the relevant neural features enabled and disabled.
Evaluate image quality as well as frame rate. If you see artifacts or instability, disable the feature, verify the game files, and test a newer recommended driver. AMD’s 25.12.1 notes recommend AMD Cleanup Utility when downgrading to an earlier driver.
Should RX 7000 owners upgrade for Redstone?
| Situation | What Redstone changes | Upgrade case |
|---|---|---|
| You play supported, ray-traced AAA games at 1440p or 4K | Neural upscaling and related features may be useful if your games support them. | Potentially meaningful, but compare current prices and real game support. |
| You mainly play esports or games without Redstone integration | The driver alone may add little or nothing. | Weak reason to upgrade. |
| You already own a fast RX 7000 card and rarely use ray tracing | Some newer upscaling support may be available through later SDK work. | Usually not enough by itself. |
| Your games are CPU-limited | Lowering the GPU workload may not improve performance substantially. | Look at the bottleneck first. |
| You dislike generated frames | Upscaling remains separate from frame generation. | Judge the card on conventional performance and image quality. |
AMD announced the RX 9070 XT at a $599 US suggested launch price and the RX 9070 at $549 in February 2025; both were listed with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. Those are launch figures, not verified September 2026 retail prices. The purchase decision should be based on current pricing, total gaming performance, power requirements, resolution, and supported games—not the Redstone name alone.

- It does not work in every game after a driver installation.
- It does not guarantee a universal percentage increase in FPS.
- Displayed FPS from frame generation is not identical to conventionally rendered FPS.
- Frame generation does not remove latency or artifact trade-offs.
- FSR 4, FSR Redstone, and FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 are related but not interchangeable labels.
- RX 7000 support for FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 does not unlock every Redstone feature.
Earlier FSR versions remain available on a broader range of AMD, Nvidia, and Intel GPUs when developers integrate them. AMD Fluid Motion Frames is a separate driver-level frame-generation technology and should not be confused with Redstone.
