Yes—AMD’s Radeon RX 9060 XT is a serious direct rival to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5060, but the comparison changes depending on which model you buy. The 8GB RX 9060 XT launched at the same $299 price as the RTX 5060 and appears to offer stronger conventional gaming performance. The 16GB version is even more interesting: at a $349 launch price, it is arguably aimed as much at the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB as the RTX 5060.
AMD’s advantage is raw gaming value and memory capacity. Nvidia still has the stronger software and feature ecosystem, particularly DLSS, frame generation, Reflex, CUDA and creator tools. The RX 9060 XT hits the bullseye as a value-and-VRAM counterpunch—not as a universal replacement for every GeForce feature.

There are really three graphics cards in this comparison
Calling the RX 9060 XT a single product obscures the most important buying decision. AMD sells it with either 8GB or 16GB of GDDR6 memory, while Nvidia’s RTX 5060 comes with 8GB of GDDR7.
| GPU | Launch MSRP | VRAM | Most direct comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB | $299 | 8GB GDDR6 | GeForce RTX 5060 |
| Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB | $349 | 16GB GDDR6 | GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB |
| GeForce RTX 5060 | $299 | 8GB GDDR7 | RX 9060 XT 8GB |
That pricing makes AMD’s intention fairly clear, even if neither company formally describes the matchup as a direct corporate target. The 8GB cards occupy the same launch price class. The 16GB RX 9060 XT costs $30 less than the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB’s $379 launch MSRP and $80 less than the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB’s $429 MSRP.

AMD’s card has the headline specification advantage in stated FP32 compute: 25.6 teraflops versus 19.2 teraflops for the RTX 5060. It also lists a considerably higher boost clock and more render and texture units in consolidated comparison tables.
Those figures are useful context, not a promise of a particular frame rate. AMD and Nvidia use different architectures, core designs, cache systems and driver stacks. Nvidia’s 448GB/s memory bandwidth is also much higher than AMD’s 320GB/s, but bandwidth is not the same as capacity. A faster memory pipe cannot compensate for a workload that needs more than 8GB of usable graphics memory.

Does the RX 9060 XT actually beat the RTX 5060 in games?
The available evidence supports a careful yes for conventional rendering: current comparative coverage describes the RX 9060 XT as offering more raw gaming performance than the RTX 5060. The size of the advantage depends on the game, resolution, settings, drivers and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled.
That conclusion should not be turned into a universal percentage. Tom’s Hardware’s detailed review focused on the 16GB RX 9060 XT and the broader RTX 5060 Ti class, and did not have an RTX 5060 sample for a direct $299-versus-$299 test. AMD did publish its own 8GB comparison against the RTX 5060, but those results are vendor testing rather than independent benchmark evidence.

AMD’s testing used a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory and Windows 11 Pro. Its 1080p comparison included games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Starfield, with separate driver versions for the AMD and Nvidia cards. That is useful evidence of AMD’s positioning, but the selected games and settings mean it should not be treated as proof that the RX 9060 XT wins every title.

1080p gaming
Both cards are aimed squarely at mainstream 1080p gaming. The RX 9060 XT 8GB is attractive for esports and conventional games when it is genuinely available near $299. At very high refresh rates, however, the CPU can become the limiting factor, making differences between GPUs less meaningful than a benchmark chart suggests.
For a 1080p buyer who plays competitive games, uses sensible texture settings and upgrades relatively often, 8GB can still be adequate. For demanding single-player games, heavy mods or a multi-year ownership plan, the 16GB RX 9060 XT provides more headroom.
1440p gaming
The RX 9060 XT is capable of 1440p gaming, but it is not a guarantee of maximum settings and high frame rates in every modern release. Texture quality, ray tracing, upscaling and the game engine all matter.
The 16GB model is the safer choice at this resolution because it reduces the chance of texture-streaming problems, sudden performance drops or forced compromises in newer games. More VRAM does not automatically increase average FPS, but it can make performance more consistent when an 8GB card runs out of room.

Why 16GB is the RX 9060 XT’s strongest argument
The RTX 5060 has one fixed 8GB configuration. AMD lets buyers pay a $50 launch premium for twice the memory.
That matters most when you combine 1440p resolution with high-resolution textures, ray tracing, large open worlds, mods or frame-generation features. The extra memory can help avoid texture-streaming issues and the stutter or setting reductions that sometimes appear when a game exceeds an 8GB budget.
It is not accurate to call 16GB universally necessary. An esports-focused 1080p player may get better value from an 8GB card, particularly if the 16GB model has a large markup. But if you intend to keep the GPU for several years, the 16GB RX 9060 XT is more future-resistant and offers a much more comfortable margin.

Tom’s Hardware has argued that buyers should avoid 8GB cards where possible and documented modern games that behave poorly on demanding presets with limited VRAM. Those findings are game- and setting-dependent, so they should not be generalized to every title. The sensible interpretation is that 8GB remains usable, but increasingly requires more active settings management.
Nvidia’s response is a better feature stack
The RTX 5060’s strongest advantages do not appear in a basic rasterization chart. Nvidia supports DLSS 4 Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation and Reflex 2 features. It also offers ninth-generation NVENC, sixth-generation NVDEC, CUDA, NVIDIA Studio, Broadcast, G-SYNC, ShadowPlay and RTX Remix support.
For games that support DLSS well, the RTX 5060 can deliver a compelling combination of image quality, perceived smoothness and latency controls. This is especially relevant to buyers who prioritize ray tracing or regularly play titles with strong Nvidia integration.

AMD counters with FSR, Fluid Motion Frames, Radeon Super Resolution, Anti-Lag 2, AV1 encoding and decoding, and support for newer FSR 4 or Redstone technologies. Support and quality vary by game, however. A feature listed on a product page is not the same as universal availability across the games a buyer owns.

Frame generation also needs honest interpretation. It can raise the displayed frame rate without delivering the same increase in traditionally rendered frames or reducing input latency by an equivalent amount. A comparison between native FPS, upscaled FPS and generated FPS is not meaningful unless the rendering mode is clearly labeled.
For gaming alone, AMD’s raw-performance and VRAM advantage is persuasive. For streaming, video editing, CUDA applications, creator software or Nvidia-specific game features, the RTX 5060 may be the better tool despite its lower memory capacity.
Ray tracing is not a simple AMD-versus-Nvidia win
Nvidia retains an important ray-tracing ecosystem advantage, but it would be too broad to say that the RX 9060 XT loses every ray-traced benchmark. Current comparisons describe AMD’s card as competitive in some raw ray-tracing tests, and it can outperform the RTX 5060 in particular workloads.
The overall experience depends on more than native ray-tracing throughput. DLSS, Ray Reconstruction, frame generation, driver maturity and developer support can make an Nvidia card preferable even where AMD’s raw result is close. Against the RTX 5060 Ti class, independent coverage generally places the RX 9060 XT 16GB close in conventional performance but somewhat behind when ray tracing is involved.

If ray tracing is an occasional option, the RX 9060 XT remains viable. If it is central to your game library, Nvidia’s complete feature stack deserves more weight than a single raster or ray-tracing chart.

Power, connectors and practical compatibility
Power consumption is not a major separator. The RX 9060 XT 8GB is rated at 150W, the 16GB version at 160W and the RTX 5060 at 145W. AMD lists a 450W minimum power supply for the 8GB model, while Nvidia recommends a 550W system power supply for the RTX 5060.
AMD specifies one 8-pin connector. Nvidia lists an 8-pin PCIe cable or compatible PCIe Gen 5 cable, depending on the board design. Actual dimensions, cooler quality, fan noise, factory overclocking, BIOS modes and connector implementation vary by manufacturer, so check the exact add-in-board model before buying.
Street prices can overturn the launch-day verdict
Price snapshot checked August 18, 2026: launch MSRP is not the same as checkout price. PC Gamer listed RX 9060 XT 8GB examples around $370–$410 and 16GB examples around $470, while Tom’s Hardware also reported launch-period 16GB cards starting around $389 rather than the advertised $349.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose prices materially change the recommendation:
- RX 9060 XT 8GB at $299: attractive, particularly for 1080p gaming.
- RX 9060 XT 16GB at $349–$399: the strongest version and the default long-term choice.
- RX 9060 XT 8GB around $399–$410: poor value unless the RTX 5060 is even more expensive and higher-tier options are unavailable.
- RX 9060 XT 16GB near $470: stop treating it as an automatic bargain and compare faster GPUs.
Retail prices vary by country, board partner, stock and promotions. Always compare the actual model, warranty, shipping and return policy rather than relying on an MSRP printed in a launch announcement.
Which card should you buy?

- You accept that future games may require lower texture settings.
Buy the RTX 5060 if:
- It is substantially cheaper than the comparable RX 9060 XT.
- You value DLSS, Multi Frame Generation, Reflex or Nvidia’s ray-tracing features.
- You stream, edit video or use CUDA-based applications.
- You rely on NVIDIA Studio, Broadcast, NVENC or related creator tools.
- Your preferred games specifically benefit from Nvidia’s implementation.
Alternatives worth checking
The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is the more natural Nvidia comparison for the RX 9060 XT 16GB, provided the price difference is justified. Intel’s Arc B580 offers 12GB of VRAM and launched at $249, although comparison coverage has found some cards closer to $309 and Intel’s driver and game compatibility should be considered.
Discounted previous-generation cards such as an RX 7700 XT or RTX 4060 Ti may also be worthwhile, but only after checking current local pricing, warranty coverage and game performance. If the RX 9060 XT 16GB approaches the price of a materially faster GPU, move up the product stack rather than paying an inflated price for a mainstream card.
Verdict: a bullseye, with an asterisk
AMD has made a credible direct shot at the RTX 5060. The RX 9060 XT 8GB occupies the same $299 launch price class and appears to offer stronger conventional gaming performance. The 16GB version is the more important product: it adds the memory headroom modern games increasingly demand and undercuts the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB at launch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The RX 9060 XT is therefore not an across-the-board GeForce replacement.
My pick is the RX 9060 XT 16GB when it costs roughly $349–$399. Choose the 8GB version only when it is close to MSRP and your 1080p workload suits it. Choose the RTX 5060 when Nvidia’s software ecosystem matters more than maximum VRAM and conventional gaming value. At inflated RX 9060 XT prices, forget the launch narrative and compare the actual alternatives available at checkout.
