amir.dll is not a Windows component. Strong public evidence associates it with the retail Windows release of Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, where it appears beside the game executable and forms part of the older StarForce copy-protection system.
That distinction matters. Do not download amir.dll into System32, register it with regsvr32, or begin by repairing Windows. First determine which edition of the game you own and whether the file is missing, quarantined, damaged, or being called by protection software that no longer works on your version of Windows.

What is amir.dll?
amir.dll is an application file associated primarily with the retail PC version of Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. Installation inventories and diagnostic module listings place it in the game directory alongside POP3.EXE, rather than in a Windows system folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt appears to be related to StarForce 3.6.10.06 protection used by historical retail releases. That means an error naming the file can represent two different problems:

- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- The game-local file is genuinely missing or damaged.
- The file exists, but the old copy-protection system or its driver cannot initialize.
The usual messages include:
- “The program can’t start because amir.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because amir.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading amir.dll.”
- “amir.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are generic loader messages. They do not prove that Windows itself is damaged, and they do not prove that every amir.dll error has the same cause.
Is amir.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies amir.dll as a Microsoft file, Windows runtime, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, .NET component, or standard driver library.
It should normally remain in the game’s installation folder, next to the executable that uses it. Do not copy it to either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit game. That does not mean the game’s 32-bit DLL belongs in SysWOW64, and placing it there can create conflicts with unrelated software.
Fix 1: Identify the edition and repair its complete installation
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Before changing anything, establish how the game was installed:
- A retail CD or DVD installation usually includes the original StarForce protection.
- A Steam installation uses the files supplied by Steam and may not match a disc release.
- A GOG installation is a separate package. GOG advertises its release of The Two Thrones as DRM-free.
Do not mix amir.dll, POP3.EXE, or other files between these editions. Historical reports show that different releases can contain different protection files. Replacing one file with a copy from another edition may create a new loader or protection failure.
Check whether the file exists
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Click Open File Location.
- Look for
amir.dllbeside the game executable.
If the file is present, do not replace it immediately. The problem may be a dependency or StarForce initialization failure rather than a missing file.
If the file is absent, use the repair method for the same edition:

- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Steam: Open Steam, select Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Client wording can vary.
- GOG: Rerun the official installer for the same game edition, or redownload the installer from your GOG account and install the complete package.
- Disc: Uninstall the game, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original disc. Apply only an official patch intended for that release.
Start the game after verification or reinstallation. If it launches, the missing or damaged game files were the cause.
If amir.dll is still absent after a complete reinstall, stop looking for an isolated copy. That points to an incomplete installer, antivirus quarantine, a mismatched patch, or an edition-specific protection problem.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software can remove or quarantine a game file, but the file name alone does not establish that it is safe. Restore it only when the entire installation came from a trusted, legitimate source and the detection clearly refers to that installation.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Expand a recent detection related to the game.
- Check the file path. It should point to the game folder, not a temporary download directory or an unrelated system folder.
- If the source is trusted and the detection is clearly associated with the legitimate installation, choose Restore or the available equivalent action.
- Reinstall or verify the complete game package afterward if other files were also removed.
Do not restore a file simply because its name is amir.dll. If the detection is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall the game from the original disc or official store installer.
If Defender repeatedly removes a trusted installation, you can temporarily add the verified game folder under Virus & threat protection settings → Manage settings → Exclusions → Add or remove exclusions. Use the narrowest possible folder exclusion, and remove it after testing. Reinstalling the complete game remains safer than restoring one DLL by itself.
Fix 3: Determine whether StarForce is the real failure
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A retail disc copy can contain an old StarForce protection version that is incompatible with current Windows releases. StarForce states that protection versions below 4.05.007.005 do not work on Windows 10 without a publisher-supplied patch. Windows 11 can present the same class of legacy-driver problem.
Signs of a protection failure include:
- The error continues even though
amir.dllis visible in the game folder. - The game asks you to restart repeatedly.
- A message mentions a protection driver, blocked driver, or inability to initialize.
- The process closes before a game window appears.
- Reinstalling the same disc edition changes nothing.
For a retail copy, check whether an official patch exists for the exact disc release. Do not apply a patch intended for Steam, GOG, another region, or another executable version.
StarForce provides official diagnostic and update guidance for some protection versions, including utilities identified as SFUPDATE and SFREMOVE. Use those instructions only for a legitimately owned installation and only after identifying the protection version. Do not download modified executables, no-CD files, cracks, or replacement protection modules. Those can create security and compatibility problems and are not a repair for the original installation.

If the retail edition cannot work on your Windows version and no applicable publisher patch exists, the practical solution is a legitimate updated or DRM-free edition. A GOG release is advertised as DRM-free and lists support for Windows 7, 8, and 10 on its product page. It is not interchangeable with the disc files, so install it as a separate complete edition rather than copying selected DLLs.
Fix 4: Reinstall the matching edition cleanly
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use this when verification fails, files have been mixed, or the game was moved manually.
- Back up saved games if they are stored outside the game folder.
- Uninstall The Two Thrones from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Delete only the remaining game folder if the uninstaller left one behind.
- Reinstall from the original disc or the official store installer.
- Do not copy files from another edition.
- Apply the correct official update, if available.
- Launch the game from its newly installed shortcut.
If the game works after this process, the original installation was incomplete, corrupted, or mismatched.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the same error returns immediately with the same retail disc, but amir.dll is present, suspect legacy StarForce compatibility rather than a missing file. If the file disappears again, inspect Protection history before reinstalling a third time.
Fix 5: Use Windows repair only for broader system symptoms
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They cannot recreate a third-party game DLL that never belonged to Windows. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or several unrelated applications report system-file errors.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Run SFC afterward:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
Microsoft’s supported order is DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test other Windows functions as well as the game. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to the game edition and StarForce checks.

Fix 6: Do not register amir.dll with regsvr32
Time needed: 1 minute
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command for application files.

Do not use:
regsvr32 amir.dll
on the assumption that every DLL must be registered. A game or protection module normally loads from the application directory and does not need COM registration. You may receive an entry-point error, or the command may change nothing.
Use regsvr32 only when the software developer specifically documents that a particular DLL is a COM component and provides the correct registration procedure. No verified evidence establishes that requirement for amir.dll.

Time needed: 10–25 minutes
The old retail protection system may depend on a kernel driver, but updating random display, chipset, or storage drivers will not replace amir.dll. Use Device Manager when you also see driver warnings or when Windows reports a blocked or failed device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver changes.
Do not remove an unknown protection driver blindly. For StarForce, follow the official guidance for the installed protection version instead.
Hunting through Device Manager and guessing which of many drivers is stale can take longer than the game repair itself. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, with driver installation handled by its full version; it is optional and cannot make an obsolete game edition compatible with Windows.

Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
| What changed | Likely explanation | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Antivirus or cleanup ran | The game-local file or related protection files may have been removed | Check Protection history, then verify or reinstall the complete edition |
| The game was moved manually | The shortcut, working directory, or related files may no longer match | Reinstall or recreate the installation from the official package |
| An unofficial patch was applied | Executables and protection files may no longer match | Remove the mixed installation and reinstall the correct edition |
| A retail disc fails on Windows 10 or 11 | StarForce may be blocked or incompatible | Check for an official patch or use a legitimate DRM-free edition |
| A fresh install still fails | The problem may be legacy protection rather than amir.dll |
Check the exact edition and protection-related message |
| Other programs also fail | Windows components may be damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
Safe source and architecture rules
Never download an isolated amir.dll from a random DLL archive. The file may contain malware, belong to another edition, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or blocked protection driver.

The safe sources are:
- The original game disc you legitimately own.
- The official installer for your Steam or GOG edition.
- An official publisher patch for that exact release.
- Microsoft packages only when a separate Windows runtime error identifies them.
Keep the file beside the game executable. Do not put a 32-bit game DLL into System32 or SysWOW64, and do not assume a file’s name proves that it is safe.
FAQ
Is amir.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 file?
No. It is associated with a third-party game installation, not a standard Windows component.
Which game uses amir.dll?
The strongest evidence points to the retail PC release of Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. Phrase that as an association rather than a universal rule because no current official Ubisoft file manifest verifies every release.
Should I copy amir.dll into System32?
No. It normally belongs in the game folder beside POP3.EXE. System folders are not a safe replacement location.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. Only install a Visual C++ package when a separate error names an MSVCP or VCRUNTIME file.
Why does the game still fail when amir.dll is present?
The loader may be reporting a dependency problem, a mismatched executable, or a blocked StarForce protection driver. Retail editions are especially susceptible to legacy protection incompatibility.
What if a clean reinstall does not work?
Confirm whether the installation is retail, Steam, or GOG. Do not mix files between them. If the retail copy fails with a protection-related message on modern Windows, look for an exact official patch or use a legitimate DRM-free edition.
Can SFC or DISM restore amir.dll?
No. They repair protected Windows components, not third-party game files. Use them only when there are broader Windows-integrity symptoms.
