The exact version, size, checksum, and installation path can vary between records and driver packages. Treat those values as identification clues, not as universal targets.

The problem may follow a scanner uninstall, a failed reinstall, a Windows upgrade, a driver update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, or an interrupted device installation. The timing helps identify the cause, but it does not prove which Windows or security event created the failure.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete Ricoh package
This is the most reliable fix because the DLL normally depends on companion files, registry entries, device configuration, and the correct scanner driver.
Try Windows repair first
- Disconnect the Ricoh scanner from the computer.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Ricoh, the scanner utility, or the scanner driver package.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant entry.
- Choose Advanced options if it appears.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the scanner and test the original scanning application.
If the package appears in Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Ricoh scanner software.
- Choose Repair or Change if available.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.
Test by opening the application that originally displayed the error and selecting the Ricoh scanner. A successful repair should remove the missing-file message and allow the scanner interface to open.
Reinstall when repair is unavailable
- Disconnect the scanner.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the Ricoh scanner utility or WIA driver.
- If the software is listed in Control Panel, remove the related Ricoh scanner entry there as well.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the driver from Ricoh’s official support and download portal or use the original installation media.
- Confirm that the package is for the exact scanner model, not merely another Ricoh device with a similar name.
- Run the installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer, select Show more options if necessary, and choose Run as administrator.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows again.
The reinstall should restore rw430ext.dll, related files such as rwia430.dll, and the device configuration together. Do not copy a replacement DLL into a system folder.
If Ricoh does not list an IS420/430 package for your installed Windows version, do not substitute a newer driver intended for a different scanner. Check the model-specific support information and the scanner’s documented operating-system support.

Fix 2: Remove the old scanner package through Device Manager
A damaged driver can remain registered even after the Ricoh program is uninstalled. Remove the device package before reinstalling it.
- Disconnect the scanner.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Select View on the menu bar.
- Select Show hidden devices.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Ricoh scanner or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Delete the driver software for this device, select it.
- Select Uninstall.
- Repeat only for entries clearly belonging to the affected Ricoh scanner.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete Ricoh driver package again.
Do not remove unrelated imaging devices. If the scanner is listed under Other devices, remove that failed Ricoh entry and then reinstall the official package.
The fix worked if Device Manager shows the scanner without a warning icon and the scanning application can acquire an image. If the scanner returns with a warning icon, open its Properties and record the device status code. That code can indicate a connection, driver, or compatibility problem rather than a missing DLL alone.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public metadata identifies rw430ext.dll as 32-bit. A 64-bit edition of Windows can still use a 32-bit scanner driver when the calling software is designed for it, but the complete driver and application combination must be compatible.
Check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
Then check the affected scanning application:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns if needed.
- Look for the application’s architecture indicator, or check the application’s installation documentation.
- Do not assume that 64-bit Windows requires a 64-bit copy of this DLL.
Install the Ricoh package matching the scanner model and supported Windows environment. Do not place a 32-bit DLL into C:WindowsSystem32, and do not place a random copy into C:WindowsSysWOW64 or the application directory. On 64-bit Windows, those folders have specific system roles, and manual copying can create a mismatched second installation.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a driver component after installation.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the Ricoh installer or
rw430ext.dll. - Expand a detection to view its path and action.
- Restore the file only if you can confirm that it came from the genuine Ricoh installation and the system is otherwise trusted.
- If uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver from Ricoh’s official source instead.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force a DLL to load. A quarantined file may be incorrectly identified, but restoring a malicious file can expose the computer. After reinstalling, run a Windows Security scan and test the scanner again.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party Ricoh DLL, so use them as supporting diagnostics after checking the Ricoh installation.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test the scanner after restarting. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the Ricoh package remains the likely problem. If it cannot repair some files, repeat the process after DISM completes, then reinstall the Ricoh driver.
Repeating SFC will not download rw430ext.dll from Ricoh. Windows Update and SFC should not be expected to restore this third-party scanner component.

Fix 6: Check whether the scanner is still supported
The IS420/430 association comes from public file metadata, while current Ricoh support listings may focus on newer or related devices. Do not assume that a current Ricoh WIA package supports an older IS420/430 scanner.

Check the exact model printed on the scanner and compare it with Ricoh’s official driver listings. Confirm:
- The Windows edition and architecture supported by the driver
- Whether the package is for the exact scanner model
- Whether the installer is WIA, TWAIN, or both
- Whether Ricoh provides a package for Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Whether the scanner requires an older supported Windows environment
If no supported package exists, compatibility mode may help an installer run, but it cannot create driver support that Ricoh never provided. A supported older Windows installation or replacement scanner may be necessary.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this particular Ricoh extension DLL is self-registering.

unless the Ricoh installer or Ricoh documentation explicitly instructs you to do so. A registration error does not repair a missing dependency, wrong architecture, incomplete driver package, or unsupported scanner.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading rw430ext.dll from a random DLL site can provide the wrong version, wrong architecture, incomplete dependencies, an invalid file, or malware. Even a genuine-looking copy may not work because the Ricoh driver also requires companion files, registry configuration, and device installation.
Use Ricoh’s official support portal or original installation media. If the file already exists, right-click it, select Properties, and review its location and digital-signature information, but do not treat a file’s presence as proof that the complete driver is healthy.

If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the scanner appears in Device Manager without a warning icon.
- Test the scanner with the Ricoh software and a second compatible imaging application.
- Check the application or installer logs for a named dependency.
- If the message says “specified module could not be found,” remember that a dependency of
rw430ext.dllmay be missing even when the DLL itself is present. - Disconnect other scanners and imaging devices temporarily.
- Use System Restore if a restore point predates the failure. Open Start, search Recovery, select Open System Restore, choose a restore point, and follow the prompts. Personal files are normally not removed, but drivers, settings, and installed programs can be reverted.
- If the scanner is unsupported on the current Windows release, stop replacing DLLs and use a supported driver environment or hardware.
